    After driving a T6 Inscription, consider me impressed. I'm anything but an SUV guy but as a 7seater luxury family hauler, this XC90 is almost perfect. It has a higher build quality than X5, GLE and Q7 (those Germans seems to skimp on SUV quality over their sedans, coupes & hatches), very comfortable & efficient. The safety tech here is more comprehensive than any other maker & Volvo's legendary safety record you'll be happier knowing the family is well protected against accidents.

    +Mladen Milić Over 40 years ago, I worked with a guy who informed me that back then, that when you drove at night (in Europe), through a well lit shopping precinct, you had to switch off the headlights and drive only on parking lights. The reason this rule was brought in, was for pedestrian safety, so that when they would cross the road in front of you, they wouldn't become invisible in the glare of an oncoming vehicle's headlights. Makes a lot of sense, when you consider, that driving through most CBDs of a major city at night, you're hard pressed to pick out you're own headlights on the road. I do not know whether or not this rule still applies, or if it became one of those that slipped by the wayside over time...

    David Hamilton That is not true. Regular low beams are good enough. In Europe, you are required by law to drive with high beams, but when you switch them to low is exeption. Parking light are allowed only when stopped and parked.

  • @davidhamilton506

    @davidhamilton506

    7 жыл бұрын

    *Mladen* Your first comment of over a year ago rings true, if you drive towards another driver on high beam, as pedestrians that are crossing the road ahead of you will be obliterated by the glare of your high beam. I think the wording of your last comment should read the other way, that you're required by law to drive on low beam in a built up area, but out in the country on deserted stretches of road is the only place for high beam and naturally, must be dipped when confronted by an oncoming vehicle. In fact in my country, Australia, it's an offence to drive in a built up area on high beam. Parking lights should be employed when parking in a busy area at night. In fact a lot of European vehicles have a facility that the front and rear parking lights can be such as to have the left or right side only lit, depending on the side that faces traffic. Parking in a one way street on the left side there for example, would have the right side lit. Some vehicles today still retain the parking lights on when you drive with headlights on. Nice to hear from you after so long, cheers....

    I live in Denmark, and we were out for an exclusive test drive in the T6 version. Jesus Christ that little 2.0 inline 4 pulls like a crazy beast! On the test run we drag raced a V8 Ford truck that consumes 3 times as much fuel and has double as many cylinders, and that thing got smoked like a little car! All you Americans needs to grow out of your V8's' sure they are nice, but they are crap with all the technology you can put in a 4-cylinders!

  • @gary_beniford

    @gary_beniford

    9 жыл бұрын

    Daniel San well trucks are heavy to begin with and really not made for racing. i know a ford f350 is at least 12,000 pound vs a 5000 pound Volvo it's obvious who would win. on top of that the Volvo can only tow 5000 pounds vs the ford which can tow 32,000. the Volvo has a supercharger and a turbo which make a lot of power now but can wear out the engine faster in the long run the truck which probably has a diesel turbo might drink more fuel today but can last 3 times longer than the Volvo.

  • @danielfl.9347

    @danielfl.9347

    9 жыл бұрын

    ***** Why should it last any longer than a Volvo? Our neighbor once had a 2008 ford f250 diesel truck that constantly broke down after 3 years. Besides it smoked like shit. Why not just be a bit more possessive about technology? Once I was a V8 guy, but that surely has changed a lot over the years, do to the fact that the 3 cars that we have are all 4 cylinders.

  • @gary_beniford

    @gary_beniford

    Daniel San ford did have an engine awhile back that had issues but today's ford diesels are much more reliable. I already told you superchargers and turbo wear out faster. diesel turbo last longer though.

  • @danielfl.9347

    @danielfl.9347

    A Turbo is a Turbo, they wear out as fast wether it is a diesel engine or fuel. I just don't like American cars anymore, before they where my favorite - that was until I owned a few. I am just saying, next time you buy a car - try a German or a Swedish car, really - whats the worst thing that could happen?

  • @gary_beniford

    @gary_beniford

    Daniel San I don't like most American cars either in fact one of my favorite car brands is BMW but im pointing out your comparison between a full size super duty pick up and a family SUV is really bad. there is no perfect car that can do everything a truck has it's purpose that is towing and hauling big cargo while a Crossover/SUV is from moving people and groceries and an expensive one like this is meant to be sporty too.

    Since most of you here know more about cars than me. My dad keeps trying to steer me away from buying American Brand or German brand cars. He repeatedly mentions his experience with those cars, saying that American Cars are hard to take apart and repeatedly break down. I experienced some of these issues being young and all... we had a Ford Mustang that was 2002 or 2004ish and it would leave us at the freeway a lot and the mechanic kept making my dad buy new parts until my dad said that it wasn't worth keeping anymore so he sold it. I had interest in sometime in getting a BMW but he said that in his experience when a part gets messed up its going to cost you a lot of money to replace it. Of course my dads experiences are from the 90s to early 2000s but its been nearly 12 years since those cars came out, have those issues been addressed? One of the concerns I have is price of maintenance and the reliability of Both American and German brands. My aunt owned a Dodge and I helped my dad remove parts once and the battery was under the tire? Like we had to pick up the car and turn the wheel a certain way to slip out the battery, that experience was horrible and I don't want something that is a hassle to take apart if needed. My dad currently owns a Nissan Altima 2007 and Toyota Camry 2011 which he fixed from Salvage, replacing the parts was a breeze so I want the confidence that my first car purchase will be easily fixable if any incidents arise, like replacing bumpers, headlights, the infotainment, wheels, seats, doors, etc. Should I just stick with similar car brands as my dad is I want easy maintenance throughout the vehicle? Thank you if anyone replies, sorry I'm not too good with cars.

  • @inevahdie

    Factor in the high cost of diesel fuel, cost of maintenance, and cost of adBlue, Diesel engine for most doesn't make economical sense in North America. I've learnt this from owing a ML350 bluetec for two years.

    On the topic of headlights, they have gotten WAY too bright. For a while I thought everyone was just driving with high-beams on, but then noticed new cars all have incredibly bright headlights. When you're driving at night on a windy road and hit with this much light head on, it gets downright dangerous. This is something that should be regulated/limited because the brightness is becoming ridiculous.

    Hey CNET, question about the battery only mode in cold weather. Does the heater run off engine heat or is there a separate electric heater in the car? I'm wondering because with its plug in capabilities and electric only range you wouldn't ever really need to use gas in daily commuting but in northern climates it would make electric driving very cold.

    Don't knock on the black unpainted cladding and bumper on the Trax. With the unpainted black bumpers, I don't have to worry when I parallel park on the street. If some jackhole decides to park by Braille, it won't look chewed up like a painted one. And if it gets chewed up, I could just go down to my local Chevy dealer, pick up a new bumper cover and just slap it on myself. No need to drop off the car at the body shop to have it painted. Also with the unpainted side cladding, you don't need mud guards.

    Even with analog buttons you have to turn your head to find the button/nob you want to press/turn so i don't see why touch is a bigger deal. The screen is at least higher placed than most analog buttons and nobs so you don't need to look as far down from the windshield... And that's positive. No matter what you always will have to look away to change something unless you can access all the settings on the heads-up display through a joystick with your thumb... But that would mean a lot of info disturbing the view so no matter if the settings are placed on the dash, steering wheel, in the center or where ever you have to look away from the windshield unless you memorise it all, so there are no completely safe way to access without looking away.

    This new Volvo will make history .. Remember is June 2015 and with in less than a year, the new Volvo xc 90 will be the # 1 SUV in America and maybe even in the world..... Volvo is coming back and stronger and better than ever before and all its competitors can't compete with just the same old stories, like well its a mercedes, that no-longer is enough; give me more for my $$$$$. It may take Mercedes, Audi, BMW etc years before they catch up to Volvo's new platform and technology. By than Volvo will have out performed them all and Volvo will be on next level technology... The 11 Billion Chines auto maker "Gili" invested in Swedish auto maker Volvo, will make a huge difference in the auto market going forward... America don't second guess yourself, go and test drive the new Volvo xc 90 and you will see it for you self... Its the best in the class SUV and way a head of the game...... 🚘Volvo xc 90😉 🏃🏼🏡

    In 2004 I purchased a brand new Volvo XC90 in the United States. From day 1 the vehicle showed transmission issues. Volvo denied that there was an issue and Volvo Headquarters never admitted that the transmission they put in the vehicle was simple put a terrible GM transmission with documented early failures. After complaining several times and being told "I don't hear anything", "Sluggishness is normal for such a heavy vehicle", the 1st of 3 transmissions put in the vehicle failed (yes, the car has gone through 3 transmissions) during a "test drive" with the Volvo service manager. Finally, Volvo recognized it was a defective transmission. It simply had no choice as the vehicle "bucked" at a stop light. Each transmission lasted approximately 50,000 miles. Recently, the latest transmission died at 50,000 miles and Volvo offered $1,000 toward a $7000 repair. Volvo Sweden and Volvo USA does not stand behind their car and thus no matter how beautiful the car is or how safe it is doesn't matter when the transmission fails and you are left stranded or worse (hit from behind in traffic when the car doesn't move and you can't get over to the shoulder) and Volvo doesn't admit its failure and leaves its customer to fend for themselves. Beware of purchasing a brand new Volvo XC90 before you look on KZread for individuals having issues with their brand new ones.

    Recent increase of interest in this car but that weight though! Sure it may not feel like it's that heavy, but I can't help but think about how much more MPGs the XC90 could get if it was slimmer. All and all, a XC90 T6 should make for a used car ... 500lbs+ pound on that T8 just ain't cool (lol).

    Just a thought, while braking in an electric or hybrid car can put some charge back into the battery pack, why then can't the vehicle manufacturer's develop a system that has all four wheels suppling the charge whilst on the move?...........To answer my own question, I suppose that would increase the load on the system, to rob you of mph. Still, it's food for thought....

    Volvo compromised the 2nd row seating for the 3rd row in the XC90. I went to buy one, but my 2008 Pontiac Torrent has a much more comfortable rear seating position. The rear seat cushion is about ~16" high & the seat slides back & the seat back can recline also, so even 6'+ people to sit & be comfortable in a 112.5" wheelbase SUV. The large FWD/AWD GM's (Buick Enclave) are the same as the XC90, compromised. The Enclave 2nd row seating is terrible except for small folks. So I give up the panache of a Volvo or an Encore for a new Terrain or Equinox since 2nd row seating comfort is not something I want to sacrifice. Or wait for 2017 for the new Caddy XT5 & GMC. I really like the XC90 (and XC60) otherwise and would have bought one. Let the flaming begin.....

    I was wondering if a manufacturer would ever get the idea and start putting an a/c compressor style clutch on a supercharger for increased efficiency at normal to low loads. I don't know if this is what they're doing here, but it sounds like a similar idea. Now I'm just waiting for a manufacturer to get smart and have a mode where the car will run on pure electric for the high draw/short duration periods such as accelerating onto a freeway or from a stop light in the highway such as we have near where I live; then run the engine once you're up to highway speeds where it will be most efficient. Lastly, I've noticed that headlight effectiveness is less important to the way that I drive as where I look. I've driven many vehicles with either faulty or relatively dim headlights such as a first gen dodge neon. In every case I've avoided accidents because of where I look down the road, rather than how far the headlights reach. My father taught me to drive by looking as far down the road as possible and putting most of my focus on the middle of the lane where tire wear is least. Even at night, that keeps my eyes farther down the road then where the headlight beam is too weak to show on the road, but where it would illuminate things higher up. Because of natural human instinct to focus on movement, that driving style allows me to use my peripheral vision as it's meant to; alerting me to obstructions or oncoming dangers from the sides of the road. With that, I'm able to keep most of my focus as far in front of the car as possible and avoid the occasional deer or bad driver.

    WuWei Xu im not arguing here just saying cooley didn't mention how much the t6 made and I had to look it up. 316 is really good and fits well in this segment especially when you consider a BMW x5 makes 300hp out a of a turbo inline6 which is the base engine. though it's controversial if turbos and supercharged engines can last as long as NA because of the wear on the engine.
