I bought a DIYCNC router in hopes to cut copper plates for a project I am doing.. spent all that money and it couldn't do it. barely cut wood.. The NEMA 17s would go off kilter and I burned thru 2 of their crappy 1 amp spindles.. Went to Lowes and bought a 6 amp ZIP IT cutter and use it as a spindle.. Works great. Jerry rigged it to my Z axis so I could cut a spindle holder for it.. Used some aluminum Angle bars to reinforce it. It looks like poop, but works.. But those 17s would not do the job they needed to do. And their program they gave sucked to run it all. Stepped up to Mach 3 with an UC100. Bought NEMA 23 KIT from eBAY. Stepped up to a much much more powerful computer than what I was using.. Had an all in one touch screen.. Too weak. Had just a 1.3 Ghz processor, 4 GB of ram tho. But used only 512 Mhz towards video.. Now got a 4 Ghz processor, 12 GB of ram with a 4 GB video card.. Water cooled with LEDs.. Ya.. Had to have them. Doing my first run now with it all. uploading a video right now to KZread. I plan to build a new frame and make a larger cnc with the equipment I have. soon.. soon.. I have been watching your videos for a while Roger Webb. You are inspiring. I'd love to get that G code for those Images.. OR the CAD program.. So I can scale it and make the G code myself. Love those patterns and designs.. Did you make those or is there a place to download those? .. Thanks..

Knowing nothing of CNC machines, I'm left wondering if you could zero Z-axis by holding the new router bits tip on the reference height point, lower the cnc machine on it and simply attach the bit there. Guaranteed to be level at 0-height with minimal fuss. Not that the paper trick is much work either, but if you're doing this a lot, it could save you some time.
