CNC Knife Blade (How To Get A Good Surface Finish)

This video is some behind the scenes on the making of the blade for a titanium flipper knife
I go into the CAM (Computer Aided Machining) process and how that is done ...and we get to see the result. The previous blade I did was really not good.
I show a ton of close-up footage of that and why it's so bad.

Thank you Oakwood. The answer to that is not exciting... the machine was in stock and at a price we could afford right now. If we had a little more money and time, then we might have gone for a Mazak. If money and time were totally in our favour, then we would have gone for an Okuma.

Magnus that time and process is way over the top for the blades. Switch to a high feed mill to rough and then use a ball to finish. Leave 0.4mm for the finishing ball endmill should leave a mirror. Hard you hard milling or annealed?

Hey James, it is definitely slow going! I'm milling the steel soft ...should I be milling with the ball endmill you recommend when it has been hardened (plus tempered)? I'm totally ignorant with "annealing" and had to google it. Still not clear to me... is annealing basically just the whole heat-treat process?

Hi Magnus, I see that Grimsmo currently is developing their new knife as well. (The Rask)... John does all the 2.5D milling first, then heat treat, then back on the fixture to hard mill the bevels then onto surface finishing (vibratory tumble in media) and final grind. Have you considered doing this with your knives? The process seem pretty well dialled in requiring less hand finishing.

  • @MagnusMacdonald

Hey Ian, it seems he uses (or used in the past) a type of grinding wheel for the Rask ...and this is what he's trying to use again. Short term I'm just trying to get these knife out ...and so happy to hand-sand. Long term I'm hoping to have it all done on the machine(s). Will have a little look at hardening the blades first. Cheers Ian.

At 2:02, it looks like you're ramping down in the z axis. If so, then it explains the tool marks you're experiencing, because you're cutting with the endmill's sharp corners. Switch to a corner rounded EM or cant the fixture so the bevels are perpendicular to the spindle. If you can, use a facemill rather than an EM. Flat EM's have a concave dish ground at the end, so the only part of the tool cutting are the sharp tips. Not ideal for facing or contouring . Lay down an upside down plate and you get the same thing. Only the outer rim is making contact. General tips from watching your other vids. 1. Don't plunge with a ball EM or use it to rough out a pocket. Save them for final finishing and avoid using the bottom/center of ball. The SFM is 0 or very close to 0 at the center. Not good for the tool. 2. Try to use the thickest and stubbiest tools you can while maintaining proper coolant flow and reaching the necessary contours. Rather than taking 30 passes with a .25"/6mm EM, use a larger EM and take fewer rouging passes. 3. If you can, enable both ways milling, drop down the Feed and Retract planes, and/or select keep tool down. Reduces time spent cutting air and its takes seconds to do. 4. Look into the Nampower brush. Might reduce time spent hand sanding. 5. Try what @ Machinist said and use the side of the endmill rather than the bottom to cut the bevels or a tapered EM. Many sellers should a variety of angles in stock, ready to buy, or you can order a custom EM with your desired taper angle.

Cheers Pavel. Yes, I do use a corner radius tool. I've found that both ways milling leaves a poorer finish (well, I found that in the past ...have not tried lately with recent improvements I've made). Also, yes, will look at name brush. Thank you.

Hey Manny, the file is a Frankenstein monster of a thing ...but I will share a file(s) in some videos soon. Grimsmo's Norseman knife has the machining lines left in the blade (almost certainly part of the iconic look). I'm definitely trying to avoid that with this knife though.
