My favorite is when people have two-car garages filled with about $500 worth of crap, while two vehicles worth $50K+ sit outside depreciating because they are exposed to the elements.

I've been away a bit and hope your YT issues are over - I have seen other YT-ers saying the same thing as what happened to your channel. Just subscribed to your new one as well. Re clutter - totally agree. Not to mention if you're stressed, which can happen more in a cluttered environment, you can't be as productive as you would if your mind was calmer. For me, that's the biggest pro of decluttering, having a peaceful, relaxing space to be in.

I always think about Downtown Abbey and the beautiful life with chinas, silverware, curtains, rugs, gardens, horses etc... Even if I could afford all of it, going back to the Belle Epoque and Victorian Era, I certainly could not afford all the staff to take care of it. They almost filed Bankruptcy even in the tv series. Take note. Keep the fantasy self under CONTROL

There's so much more fun/satisfaction in using item 'x' rather than storing it and not using it, that's why I prioritise the stuff I actually use and find it easy now to let other stuff go. G Ire

Being able to shop your pantry, shop your garage, shop your closet SAVES time and money, as opposed to having to commute to the store and buy an item (which will have gone up in price compared to what you paid for the one you threw out).

Agreed! Many people are able to do this for many types of items. You can only have things well organized and ready to be “shopped” if you aren’t drowning in clutter. This is the point I am trying to make. 👋🏼

Hello! 🇨🇦 I always advocate to start with decluttering ALL of your spaces and all the neutral spaces (ex: kitchen tends to be neutral for the most part). You can comment on how things are easier for you with less clothes, for example. Hopefully he will also see and feel the way that things are easier, maybe in the living room or bathroom or even entryway. It might take time, but don’t get hung up on trying to change him. Just lead by example. 🤞🏼👋🏼💕

@MinimalistHome In 2021 & and 2022, we rented a double wide trailer for $2300/mo. It had a really bad rat problem, as well as mold. The cost of living is insane.

The whole "percentage of home that's cluttered vs mortgage" thing is FALSE ECONOMY. Unless you were actually renting a larger apartment or a storage space BECAUSE of the stuff, having the house empty COSTS you money because of the cost to replace the single items as they wear out plus the cost to commute to the store to do so. A well stocked pantry is a hedge against both inflation and possible layoffs from a recession. Having emergency and spare items on hand saves time and money. For example, if your space heater goes out in the middle of a snow storm, you don't want to have to drive to the store to buy another one right then.

Agreed! I am “minimalist light” and I do have a fully-stocked pantry and even a second fridge for things like extra eggs and milk! The type of clutter I’m talking about it more like boxes of old papers or piles of clothes that you never wear anymore, etc. Of course it’s is possible to have “good clutter” or way too many things “in case of emergency” as well, but I am in no way pushing people to have an empty home. 🏡

@@MinimalistHome That's great that you are able to can food. The shelving is worth it because it gets things off the floor and makes them easier to organize and rotate. I'm in the USA where lumber is cheaper. There's often free used furniture, used wood fencing and shipping pallets that are not too hard to make into sturdy shelving with a saw and some screws.

Hi Joanne I remember my young days when I thought that having stuff meant success. Now at the other end of the spectrum I've realised this is not true. So my motivation comes from 'regaining' my youthful state of 'owning less' but now with added wisdom and appreciation. Best regards. G Ire
