I cant' believe I listened to you ramble about your decluttering/life experiences for NEARLY an hour. But I did. I felt like I'd dropped in for a cup of tea and a chat with a friend. You weren't on screen conducting a class, giving a lecture, or teaching me how to declutter. We were just talking. Thanks. I'm going to be watching more of your videos. I hope they are all like this--casual and friendly.

I agree. I think this format, rambling, fits the beginner to encouraging those who have already started or are attempting to start. Also, she actually goes deeper without belaboring the point, example at the end referring to order, things, people, online time, etc. That point could be overwhelming to some to add to comsidering decluttering, however, it encourages me, where I am.

Christine Murphy ... me too! In my lifetime I've moved a thousand times not always due to MY choice, so I realized now i'm suffering from what I call housing/moving-insecurity. There's nothing I would love more than to know MY name is on the house deed and I could settle in comfortably & feather my nest my way. But my insecurity makes me know I need to keep everything streamlined and bags able to be packed swiftly. I've been in this apt for five yrs now, but the landlord is always looking over my shoulder causing me much insecurity. I realize everyday is getting closer to a future move so I've GOT to be getting ready and lighten my load NOW. I grew up literally living out of a suitcase and now at age 71 it's time to pare back down to that life again.

The question I ask myself is: "If this were at the store right now, would I buy it or could I only 'take it or leave it?" If I would pass it up or could walk past without much notice, BOOM, it goes. Others might use whatever it is right now while it's going ignored in our home. That MIGHT be beneficial to some others. :)

Going through the clothing, if the hamper is overflowing, that's the BEST time to go through the wardrobe. What's in the hamper is used the most. It's amazingly easier to have the 'most used' items separate from the decluttering time where they will return. I think I've mentioned that before but it COULD help someone who gets overwhelmed, looking at the ENTIRE task of doing it after those clothes are cleaned and mixed back up with what wasn't worn.

I've gone through books, clothes, stuff kids left with me when they moved out, the kitchen, etc. then, my mom passed away and left a two bedroom condo full of stuff. I’m half way through, one thing I want to add about decluttering anyone, especially children's stuff, that’s what my mum did when I was about 3-5yo. She decided that some of my toys are damaged so I should not have them. She threw away my and my sisters favourite toys which was never communicated to us beforehand. (And before that my baby bottle, I wasn’t emotionally ready to say bye to, no one told me that this is about to happen). This wasn’t the only thing that led to it but definitely added to the lack of security I felt my whole childhood. As a child I remember not trusting my environment… and this was the first situation. Both me and my sister are bitter about it 30 years later 🫣 don’t do that to anyone.

When we were a family of 5, a 2600 sf home and a 3 car garage was filled to the gills with stuff, I was stressed about it, but then, there were no videos like this to tell me this was a real thing. When the kids left one by one and we moved to a smaller home, we got rid of so much. So I think after my next 2 moves where our homes got smaller and smaller, I removed allot more from my home. Almost too much 😮. Then came these videos! There are some areas that I still could be re-declutter but these were the final push to feel comfortable in my home. For me, this really has been a 9 year journey. And I am so much happier! Your videos are so inspirational and I appreciate that you are a minimalist that likes decor ❤. Minimalism can cross a line if not done right. A home is us and should reflect who we are and I learned that by removing family photos wasn’t for me and put them back out. I needed to allow a couple of necessities on my counters.😊

Carol-- could your husband do the sedentary things like paying the bills, folding the laundry, and even placing an online grocery order for pickup or delivery? You can make the list but he could enter everything in to the app, if you have a grocery store that does curbside pickup. I love doing that because it keeps me from wandering all over the store and finding more things to buy. If you can't let go of your produce selections, you can go in and get those and then go to the pick-up area where they will bring everything out to your car and put it in for you. Then you drive home and grocery shopping is done! I love the time savings, and the service is free with an order of $35 or more at my store. It doesn't take much to purchase that minimum amount! I don't know where you live, but in the US, most large stores have the 3-wheeled motorized carts for people with limited mobility to ride/drive, so they can do their shopping. He might actually enjoy getting out to do some of that!

My favorite tips I've gotten are the "catch all basket" I throw stuff in and at the end of the day I'll walk through and put what's in it away. Along with the donate box that sits behind my door once its full I take it to the hope station or any community help center.

I wish people would clarify that there is an age when you start letting them declutter. But there’s also a time when you have to do it for them. I can just see some people not getting rid of a single infant toy because you can’t declutter your kids things. 😂 or holding up clothes to their one year old “this doesn’t fit anymore, is it ok to get rid of it?” 🤦🏼‍♀️ but I do agree that (when they are old enough) we need to teach them these skills so they can manage their own things and one day their own home. ❤

You're so right -- the clutter is super distracting. I may not be ADHD (like my son), but I seldom find the energy, time, or motivation to work on my clutter. Sometimes I come up with "master plans" to execute certain projects in one room or another. Then procrastination sets in and if I'm lucky I'll remember the plan when I finally get around to executing it. The good news is -- in my small one-bedroom apartment, I've managed to shrink the "box room" down to the space under a card table. A few days ago, I moved everything off the top, wiped the card table down, and put a lovely tablecloth on top before replacing the boxes that live there. I even decluttered and organized one stack! Oh yeah, and one of these days I plan to dust off the small portable stool I bought a few years ago to take to the storage unit for sitting and sorting. Thanks for your tips and encouragement!

It took me longer than 30 minutes because there was reading material ( recipes, literature for cooking accessories) and I sort of bogged down in the reading, BUT, I got it done. My biggest hurdle is books - so many books. I have such a difficult time parting with books. I will now go back and watch the rest of your helpful video. Thank you!

Do the resume! I teach at two colleges and I help 100 students a year with their resumes. No one should do their first resume without help because one can't recognize the skills and experience they have. Case in point: Do you have work experience? No, I just work at the drive-thru of (insert fast food restaurant). Really? No experience? Multitasking, customer service, problem solving, time management, sanitation, possibly supervisory management, scheduling. . . Etc. You don't teach someone to do a resume, you teach them about themselves.

I just thought to myself - I'm awesome, I got rid of my junk drawer and it has stayed this way for about 4, maybe 5 years now! And then I thought - oh wait, there are two ribbons in my previous junk drawer - I'd better declutter it right NOW! And then I realized that the place I wanted to put those ribbons in has become my NEW junk drawer!

I look at the area, and am immediately overwhelmed. The shear number of things my eyes see at once boggles my mind. I lived for 2.5 yrs in another state living on my own for the first time in my life in my early 50's while going to college for a program that was offered there and not my own city. I took only the most immediate things I needed. My little cottage I rented was easy to keep clean, picked up, and I could breathe, I could focus on my studies, and I felt GOOD. I would come home to my hubby in my home town to visit, and I immediately felt bogged down looking at the clutter I left behind. That was my first inkling that clutter was not my friend. However, upon coming home after finishing my degree, I had to start my own practice in order to use the degree I had attained. If you are an entrepreneur, you know the mental and physical energy it takes to get things rolling, and it is fairly constant. To this day, I am still rolling around in the clutter of my home. I am so overwhelmed constantly. Yes, I have tackled areas, but I never feel I am done and can just maintain. It is exhausting! Besides that, I am 66, collecting SS now, as well as working full time in my practice as well, and would love to be able to cut back on the work end, and focus on my de-cluttering, writing music, and starting a book. My mind is going most of the time 65 miles per hour! (Used to be 100 mph, but I've gotten a bit slower as I age). I am having a hard time with even a small area to think through the steps and stay on task. The other issue is, I get going on a roll, but then, my time slot is over, and off I go for work, or such and by the time I get back to the working on this area of clutter, it's as bad as when I started! How can I get past these walls ??

Even though other areas need to be decluttered I enjoy entering my home. The second space was a small corner for reading/ thinking area. Having these 2 spaces lets me take the time I need to make wiser choices about what to declutter next and how to tackle it.

Thank you for zeroing in on why I've accumulated so much stuff. It will help prevent the situation from returning in the future. It was easier to help out others than face my own needs. Then the stroke hit from out of nowhere. Doing it "tomorrow" is NOT a good way to think. Hearing parents' stories of their rough upbringing settled somewhere in my brain even though my upbringing was different. Wish I had heard all this when I was younger.

I am one of those that does not have a junk draw. All the drawers have kitchen items I use at least three times a year and that I reorganized last year. I am trying to reorganize my very small kitchen but it is difficult. I do have multiples of some things so I gave one of the multiple baking dishes to someone else. Less than 2 weeks after the matching baking dish slipped out of my hand and hit the floor just the right way so that it broken in half. This baking dish was one that I used multiple times a week. Everyone always says that you can just buy another one but the cost is not always affordable for everyone (to say that). it was three years later that I found a similar baking dish in good condition at a thrift store at an affordable price. So now I will not be de-cluttering anymore duplicate baking dishes.

I had to move March 2020 to make room for a warehouse. I moved in with my son. We rented a Uhaul and packed it. Son's car broke down, so I drove him to work and picked him up after. Our home is 95 miles from previous place. Meantime, professionals busted in the door and started hauling stuff away. Then homeless drug addicts moved in. We drove back and found my son's truck and some family antiques were gone. Great Grandpa's rocker was sitting in the yard (over 100 yrs old). I didn't unpack for over 2 years. I didn't want to know what was gone. I baked a pie last week and asked my son if we still had a pie server because it was sticking. Realized it was one of those things that needed to be replaced. I'm 71 and have serious heart problems. Now I get out of breath after working for a short while. I am throwing stuff out (or donating) anything my son probably doesn't want or need. (My stuff not his.) Swedish Death cleaning!

I also started decluttering from my "storage room", it actually wasn't that bad and it took me only two or three days to go through all of these boxes, throw away the things that I no longer needed (most of them were broken or worn out anyways) and organize the rest. I was motivated to finally get it done because I wanted to have separate working space instead of having my desks in my living room, and I was so happy! Of course I will have to go through all these things that I left once again and re-organize them (maybe I will also get rid of even more things), and there are other spaces that I constantly re-organizing and trying to find the final spot, but it felt so much better and easier since I finally went through that room :)

As a fellow RN sister I understand and I get the pain of coming home to relax and rest after a long killer shift and then getting upset and start cleaning the mess from the moment you enter the house. It’s so draining. At almost 42 (a month shy) I realized I needed to trim a lot off from my life - starting with the husband that doesn’t bring me joy or let me be myself anymore with his overwhelming control over my every action, then trim some friendships that have been toxic, then I’ve started working about some personal soul clutter, then trim all the unnecessary clutter in house (dresses I’ve kept for years with tags on that one day I’ll magically go back to size 2 and start wearing them - reality is after pregnancy, my hips are never going to be the same), the toys and clothes I’ve kept from my daughter’s infancy hoping I’ll use it for another (2nd child) - let’s be real almost 42 - I don’t think it’s going to happen at this time and if it does I’ll just buy a few more things as needed but not worth keeping that junk and cluttering my house, all the extra chairs and tables and porcelain- I don’t through fancy parties like I used to anymore - what’s the point of keeping them.. it is just the tip of an iceberg. Thank you for the video! I was able to get a few tips from it that I will keep and use. ❤❤❤❤

I LOVED THIS. I have been watching different minimalist and i honestly felt panicked when there wasnt ANYTHING at all in their home. Not a pict on the wall or a lamp by a chair. Looked like an O.R.😨 I felt that was where i needed to be. Watching you, i see that you are for me.. You are funny, make tons of sense!! Thanks!
