CLUE (1985) Movie Reaction! | FIRST TIME WATCHING!

Фильм және анимация

Oooo this was a fun one! It was a lot of fun to try to connect the dots right after the first kill happens, right until the very end when they show off the different endings! I feel like Tim Curry did an excellent job in his role, especially towards the end when he's running around explaining everything. Such an entertaining time, and I hope you guys enjoy!

    My favorite joke in the movie is how everyone gradually gets desensitized by all the murders, until none of them are fazed at all to find that Yvette was killed, and unceremoniously dump the singing telegram girl on the study floor.

    Yeah after the first viewing --- or seeing all three endings in the theater when it came out if you were of age back on the day --- it's no longer even remotely about the mystery. It's about the comedy, and that cast. And it never gets old. That's why I love reactions to it.

    When this movie was shown in theaters in 1985, when you checked Theater listing, it stated weather you get ending A, B, or C. On the DVD, you can select A,B, or C ending ot have the option to have your DVD player select the ending for you at random. It was fun that they did that in theaters, so you could see it several times and not know. It also was done to prevent people giving spoilers to their friends. I would see one ending, and you might see another...if I came out of the theater excited about the movie and had loose lips and spoiled the ending, you'd get a different ending at a different show time or theater.

"Yes, but now I work for the United Nations." "So your work has not changed." #TakeBackTurtleBay Fun Fact: The three endings were shown at a random theater when it first came out. All three are included on video. The DVD, however, aside from all three endings, also offers the option to play the movie with one randomly selected ending. Bonus Fact: The Max Busch House, the mansion used for the exterior and ballroom scenes, was destroyed by a massive fire on October 5, 2005. After the fire, several people left flowers on the front gate and even shed tears, evidence of how much the house was cherished by the local community.

    It just makes my heart happy to see younger people getting to know people like Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Gene Wilder, and so many more of the folks I grew up loving ^_^ I'm so glad that you enjoyed the movie. One of the few that's based on a board game, and one of the few that's actually good, and conveys the playing of the game so well!

  • @Rmlohner
    @Rmlohner2 жыл бұрын

    Judging from your reaction to the weapons, I'm guessing you're not familiar with the board game. It's all about using the process of elimination to figure which of the six player characters killed Mr. Boddy, in which room, and with what weapon, as one of each is secretly put in an envelope at the start of the game, and the rest are divided equally among the players, with a single card that disproves a player's guess privately presented to them until they feel they've narrowed it down enough to make an official accusation, which takes them out of the game permanently if they're wrong. This also makes it a rare board game where at least three players are needed, since with just two it's just a completely rote experience of showing each other your cards until they're all done. This is why the film's dialogue goes a bit out of its way to keep mentioning the weapons and the house's rooms by name, plus Mr. Green's final line that he killed Mr. Boddy "in the hall, with the revolver," which is how an accusation is given in the game.

    @@Rmlohner That's one reason why I think it's such a smart use of the licence, since even though the game didn't have a story, it plays off all the elements that people will know, and even manages to riff on the idea that the game is different every time. I would like to know though if it was even partly inspired by a feature of the game that always annoyed me, the fact that you can be playing the murderer, and not know that you were the murderer! That absurd detail almost justifies it being a farce by itself...

    Here’s something most people miss. Each character’s name is essentially a color and in the board game the characters are wearing the color of their name. In the movie, however, it is their cars that are the color of their aliases. Also, it’s interesting to watch it again knowing the outcome. All of Mr. Body’s attempts to escape or have Wadsworth killed make since as he was probably being forced to play along and wanted out. For another fast paced and funny movie check out Oscar it has Marisa Tomei, Sylvester Stallone, and Tim Curry.

In the Mrs. Peacock ending she can't have turned off the electricity on the ground floor and immediately be seen in the basement hitting an air conditioning duct with her purse. And in the 'Everybody Did It' ending whoever kills Yvette is waiting for her in the billiard room, but you can still hear Mrs. White screaming upstairs!

    I love this movie so much. This is one of those movies that me and/or my dad will come back to frequently when we want to watch something fun without needing to pay too much attention (since we both know all the lines inside and out). And the more you watch it, the more you'll catch little bits that you missed before. It's a great time. I still need to see Knives Out, but I've been told that it does take a lot of inspiration from this movie.

    Shark's Fin soup is a delicacy in chinese cuisine. Had it at a lotta dinner banquets growing up. (Although soups like Bird's Nest are considered better, least so my dad would often say. I actually like Shark's Fin the most.) The fin contains gelatinous parts that feel like noodles. Because of massive overfishing, to the point many shark species have become severely endangered, and because often sharks are fished solely for the fins, with the remainder of the carcasses tossed, the soup is being increasingly banned in many jurisdictions in the past 10-15 years, with additional measures to disincentivize shark fishing. You can look up the controversy. The "noodle" parts of the fins really don't taste like anything at all, and could easily be substituted with bean noodles and countless similar, which is now becoming a trend. However, superstitions run high in Chinese culture, so many believe eating certain types of exotic foods will improve one's health in a variety of ways, hence why illegal shark hunting still occurs, even in the international trade (like sharks being hunted for fins only in South America to be exported to Asia).

    The board game has been around forever, I was playing it in the 70’s. Right before the blackmail evidence is thrown in the fire you see that there is a picture of the colonel and the motorist together in the army. The singing telegram girl is a member of the girl group the Go Go’s.

    My “OG” (😋) favorite movie!🍿 The script is SO tight and quotable! It’s hard to catch on a first watch because of the speedy line delivery, but one of the best examples of this film’s wordplay is.. Col. Mustard: You lure men to their deaths like a spider with flies. Mrs. White: Flies are where men are most vulnerable! Ha! A metaphorical parallel between an actual spider trapping/killing/living off insects and Mrs. White (a “black widow”) who attracts male prey by appealing to their *pants* fly? Genius!

    this is one of those movies i can watch over and over. so many subtle jokes, i know they are coming but they still make me laugh. the multiple endings was an interesting facet. i loved how it mimic'd the board game in that each time you play it there was a different killer/weapon/room. i read they planned to have an ending for each character as the killer but was too expensive to film them all. but the craziest part is that when they sent the film to theaters they only sent it with 1 ending....but different endings to different theaters!

    The multiple endings were a pretty neat gimmick, but the downside is that the film couldn't actually function as a legitimate mystery. Since various different killers were possible, all the "clues" had to be vague enough to fit each one, so it's impossible to figure out the killer yourself on first viewing, like any good mystery should strive for. This also makes everyone's performances quite impressive, as during many scenes they had to act in a way that could be read as either being genuinely innocent, or the killer who's putting on an act.

    Plus you could say it's the ultimate critique on Mystery Genre as a whole. Mystery writers sometimes leave out too much or put too much in like "Red Herrings" in order to confuse the reader so it's not so obvious who the killer is in the end. This movie shows anyone literally could be the killer through the various endings methods. Ending A not only applies to Scarlett but also Mustard, and Mrs White. Evette is the accomplice which makes their murders posible. Ending B for Peacock and Plum since both were in the cellar and both were missing during various key scenes in the first half of the movie. End C shows us Everyone could have killed someone. It's one of the greatest mystery films for me because it has all the tropes of a mystery and subverts so many of them while staying true to the Board game narratively.

    6:44 - Even Werewolves have knards! 😜🤣👍 The three endings was a gimmick that the movie tried where they sent out different copies of the movie to theatres and so people who went to see it never knew which version with which ending they were going to see (In fact, before the release, audiences didn't even know there were multiple endings and were confused when people who saw it at different times/theatres remembered different endings); there was even suppose to be four different endings, but the fourth one while scripted was never shot because of budget/time restrictions. The gimmick was mostly a failure, as the makers undoubtedly hoped people would return to the see the movie multiple times, which they did not. After that, for the longest time, only the "Final Solution" version, with the multiple murderers, was available on VHS rentals and on TV until decades later when the studio produced a DVD release with all three endings fused together (As you saw it here) plus with the option of viewing the movie with only one randomly selected ending. Canadian actor, Ryan Reynolds, is said to have been working on a Remake/Reboot of Clue for years now, but the pandemic seems to have put break on his plans and the project has been left in limbo (But, BOY: Am I hoping it does make it to the big screen some day soon!). Clue is one of my all time favorite movies and I use to own a VHS copy that I would play whenever I was painting figurines as a hobby in the late 80s/early 90s and I have literally viewed it over 500 times so far.

    This movie was literally (and I’m using this word correctly) a childhood staple of mine. I was born in 1985 when this movie was released and it’s amazing. As a child the incredibly obvious sexual nature of this movie went right over my head. But looking back it’s one of the funniest movies with clever innuendo. I wish more people would react to this movie. It’s an underrated classic with a star studded cast. I think i’d prob be mrs peacock or ms scarlett. Yes the game was out long before the movie. The aliases are all the names from the game. Shark fin soup is actually delicious but sad as they kill the shark just for the fin. How have you never played CLUE before? The boxes were filled with all of the weapons from the game. And the reason there are multiple endings is because when they released this in theaters originally there were three different endings you might see depending on what theater you saw it in, because different theaters were delivered a movie with a random ending. So just like the game had a different killer, using a different weapon, in a different room each time you played the game...the movie was the same for different movie goers depending on where they saw it. When it was finally released on tv and rental they put all three endings in the movie. One of my favorite movies.

    I love this movie so much and must have watched it 20+ times on VHS with my mom and my brother I was a kid. Years later, I happened upon a late night black and white movie called "Ten Little Indians," which is based off of an Agatha Christie story. Imagine my surprise when I saw that (without the humor) it was nearly identical to Clue. Apparently when they wrote the story for this movie, they had to come up with ideas, as board games have no stories. So the idea they went with was to make a comedic parody of Ten Little Indians. And holy shit, did it work!

    @13:31 - right on the money, Sam - according to Rian Johnson, Knives Out was indeed heavily inspired by this movie. Another one he cited as influential is the movie version of Evil Under the Sun, based on one of my favourite Agatha Christie novels and featuring an all-star cast led by Peter Ustinov as Hercules Poirot. 😊

  • @radicaladz

    @radicaladz

    My knowledge and appreciation of Christie is by no means encyclopedic, but the reason I like Evil Under the Sun and its various adaptations so much, and the reason it's clearly an influence on Knives Out, is that it's the epitome of a Poirot style locked room murder mystery, except it takes place in broad daylight on a beach, and there's a whole angle involving the geography of the island on which it's set, which much like the Thrombey mansion is almost a character in and of itself. Plus you get the all-star cast typical of these jaunts - Diana Rigg, Maggie Smith, James Mason, Roddie McDowall, Jane Birkin and Nicholas Clay.

    Clue the boardgame has been around since the 40's. What they got in gifts are the murder weapons from the game. I've never played the board game myself but my guess to all the alternative endings is the same as it would be in the game - there's always gonna be a new killer for each round you play. I assume everyone gets a card of who will be the killer and it's up to everyone to figure out who is the killer in that round of game? Though I guess the real ending was written for the movie. To anyone who has actually played the game, be my guest to comment if I have got all of this wrong.
