Clubman Tyre disaster leads to an opportunity...

Your video highlights the issues with modern cars perfectly regarding tyre problems. That’s why the majority of breakdown call outs these days are tyre related. I agree with the principle of changing 2 tyres on the same axle, but most people would baulk at that. Had many an argument with fleet companies about changing two tyres, when I was doing 40k plus a year before I retired. Fleet companies want tyres to be nearly bald before they change them!! Left my car at a Kwikfit centre for a week once to prove a point. Good video Ped 👍😎

I've used one of those compost bags under each wheel before now just to get enough clearance to get under to do an oil change.
They look so much better mate. Too skills reversing up and round that access to your drive. What a friendly neighbour too!
Glad you got it sorted. Will remember Steve Andrews Tyres in case we hit any problems during our MINI club trip to Gorran Haven in September.
I've heard others complain about a lack of clearance for jacks on their Minis. Glad it worked out for the new tire profile. It looks great!!

They look way better, Pete. The stance is really good now. Flaps can stay, I'll give you that one!
I don't know about these later Minis but on the Gen1 a piece of 20mm plywood with a bit of Yoga mat glued to one side on the top the jack allows you to lift the car on the sill. If you position it below the door shut line it will lift both front and rear wheels if you jack high enough. The plywood spreads the load and the yoga mat prevents damage.
What you needed was the RAC. They use airbag jack and will fit a magical, fits all cars, spare wheel to get you to the tyre place. Then you leave the wheel there for RAC to collect.
Looks great, every cloud and all that!
Hi Ped Very interesting tale of adversity, but right solution in the end. Your experience does highlight disadvantage with any modern cars - no spare wheel & jack and useless tyre repair kit😬😬 Reminds me of sidewall puncture in France with my 911 Carrera 4 S on a national holiday weekend. Porsche Assistance recovered the car to dealer in Dijon and provided a hire car no charge. It took 7 days to complete tyre replacement, but Porsche insisted that I had to replace both rear tyres, on basis new tyre would have 8mm tread depth and the other rear tyre had depth of 4mm, incompatible on 4 wheel drive. Total cost for two 305/30/R20 Eu970. OUCH😥 No room for spare wheel, foam kit waste of time, answer have a good breakdown service.

I’ve never seen streets as narrow! It’s a wonder the Sorento could fit! My first MINI had something similar happen. It was on 15” wheels and very few people stocked tyres that fitted (back in the day). She had to be carried away on a recovery truck and it took three days to get two tyres fitted. Like you, Pete, I always change them in pairs. I had three more MINIs after that, and kept them on runflats. The less comfortable ride was worth it for the peace of mind.
It's a good plan. You must be absolutely loaded replace all 4 tires on one car for a puncture. And a lovely cottage to rent out in Cornwall plus your house where you live is beautiful. This KZread business makes you a few quid on the side nice one. Well done congratulations cheers Phil from Newark

Worked with Michelin on this one. The only benefit of KZread in your list. Everything else has come from my wife and I working hard with a bit of luck thrown in 😜👍
I’ve got 225/50 R18 on my JCW Countryman because I’ve got the adjustable dampers .They are also not run flats .I had a puncture just outside Kinlochewe a couple of weeks ago and got Mini rescued to Strathcarron garage who had a replacement . I think you will both appreciate the slightly better ride quality long term Mr and Mrs Pedro 🤗ps Mini rescue were very good in such a remote location 5 star to them .
What about a "Thank you!" to the man who helped with the main "adventure", Ian? That will be nice.
Charlie looks much better with a larger profile. One of the silliest things the car industry did was get rid of the spare wheel. Had this on my old Focus, a puncture that the inflation kit wouldn't of touched. Had to get taken to a tyre place by Green Flag :-(.
We were down in Polperro, Cornwall last week too. The weather was nuts. From Biblical rain to sun to hurricane from one day to the next. Still loved it though.
Oh the joys of motoring. Had a similar issue at Christmas this year, called out the breakdown company who over inflated the tyre and followed me home with an extra inflation on the way!
Holy hell! Those roads are narrow! Can you imagine a Merica F150 trying to get through. I did the same thing with my car! The ride is much better and filled the gap much better. Plus, I have coilovers, the extra ground clearance was welcome. I think it looks better. The meaty tires on your car, looks better to me than the very thing sidewalls.

My Bluebird had different profile on front tyre's I felt the difference immediately as the car felt slower.
Last Sunday I punctured my Mini Clubman JCW front left. I’ve bought the car new and first time I went to use the repair kit. Opened it up and no compressor for the filler! Next hassle was sourcing the 235/35 19 Run flats, as I needed two, almost impossible to find. Had to go through the dealer who had tyres available got stung $1k for the two with fitting…..:-(

Had a piece of the rebar from highway shoot through a tire once, going 70mph. After sending thanks that first made it off the road with the 7 kids I was taking to the zoo that day and secondly that I hadn't been hit by a crazy gunman with a high powered rifle, I had to deal with the tire. God bless the truckers who stopped to help. Of course the part I remember most now is the child who announced as we came to a stop "Mrs. C I really, really need to pee right now.". Oh the adventures one can have with flats!
Does look a lot better with the new tyres
Arch gap be damned I'd be more interested in the ride comfort. The JCW Clubman is pretty stiffly sprung on it's standard sport suspension. Unless you have lovely smooth tarmac you're going to have a rough ride on 30 profile tyres. So glad I went for 18" wheels and adaptive dampers on our Clubman. I don't do track days in it so happy to lose some ultimate track performance in exchange for a car I can still enjoy on our p poor Norfolk back roads. Maybe Mrs PetrolPed damaged the tyre on purpose in the pursuit of a better ride. Thought about that?
Well done everyone for helping Pete with Charlie C. We enjoyed this unexpected video, lovely views of beautiful Mevagissey too (we went there while on holiday last week). She looks even better than ever with her new wheels now !

Hi Ben hope your well
Replaced the 4 Bridgestone Potenza with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 s (Front 235/35 R19Y and rear 305/30 R19 Y). Because they are different sizes, the car came with compressor and sealant. However because of the ceramic discs, if I had a puncture, don't know what I would do? . These tyres are not Porsche approved for Erica(997) but they are approved for newer 911s. I got between 12,000 and 14,000 miles per set of Bridgestones and I am going to be interested to see what the Michelins do. They are quieter, smoother and grip better in the dry and wet. Interested to see how you find them on the Mini
I've found that most new cars can only be lifted with a low profile jack. Even cars that aren't lowered. On my lowered f56 i can only just get my low profile jack under with the jacking pad fitted
Hi PP, do you have a link to the jacking pads as can’t seem to find any for a clubman?

Wouldn't going for 235 35 19 would have been better match % speedo error wise or would 235s not be wide enough for the wheels without that unsafe stretch look? Since I ditched the runflats on the Z4 I've had a Slime repair kit as it's water soluble so tyre can be repaired, most foam kits wreak the tyre so the guys at local Mi heldever told me.

Many manufacturers have quietly dropped punctures or blowouts from their breakdown cover that's automatically included alongside new car warranties but owners usually only find this out the hard way.

Well...an experience with a good outcome! Now what should you have done?...as with my Mercedes, you cannot jack the car up so the only choice is ring Mercedes Me, they arrive with a flatbed lorry and carry you and the car home. Then they lend you a slave wheel for a week so that you can get the tyre replaced and and then return to collect their wheel and all free of charge! So when Mercedes Me expires, it looks like a job for Green Flag! I had a sidewall split on the inside for no clear reason but had to take Continentals for the new set. If I keep the car long enough, a set of Pilot Cup P4S will take over!! Enjoy Cornwall...I guess you are back now but don’t stay away too long! 😃😃😃Stay safe...Richard.😃😃😃

Hi Pete looks much better. Never understand why manufactures give low profile tyres the time if day. Roads in the uk are rubbish these days its a disgrace! The roads in switzerland are fabulous and the only place you should have low profile! Still don't like those flaps! Sorry matey. 👍
Manufacturers should still provide a brace and a jack because of these kind of incidents, this happened to me with my seat Leon with damage to the side wall! I had to call a friend who came along with his own jack and brace 🤪

Hi Peds 👍
Pete, unless you are driving in Switzerland or Germany, the rest of the roads in the world are horrific for low profile tires. Yet car makers keep putting them on huge wheels on performance cars. I recently ditched my BMW 328i convertible for a VW Tiguan SUV. The roads in California are akin to Bangladesh. I had to relent and go with a SUV, which I still hate with a passion. Those roads in town in the video were certainly not designed for large SUVs however. LOL Barely can get by the buildings. New tires still look very low profile, not sure you have any additional safety from puncturing with those new ones?
The lowest profile I would go is 45mm. The roads in the UK are terrible, anything lower is asking for trouble and will give terrible ride comfort 😉
@PetrolPed
3 жыл бұрын
The profile number isn’t mm it is the percentage of the tyre width 👍
Keep the flaps , still look great 👍 better fill around the arch too .
Actually was gd that it rained, gave a bit of slip on the road if the tyre needed to move slightly
