This is such an important conversation to have! I am the person that buys $100 shirts but I only have a few and they last for years. I also try to treat e everything I own with care and make and take the best care of it I can. This is a great video coming from a girl who loves her cloths 🥰

I saw several people say they hang laundry to dry. YAH !! That is one of the BEST ways to make fabric last longer & you don't use any electricity or gas to dry it...so you're saving money. I realize clotheslines aren't allowed in some areas. But you can hang things on racks inside your home. You can have clotheslines in a basement. I'm fortunate to live in an old-fashioned town where I can have a clothesline outdoors. Boy, laundry dries nicely & smells wonderful dried outdoors. The sun sanitizes & deodorizes. As for stain removing....I have been a fan of the brand known as Puracy for the past couple years. I'm amazed what it's been able to get out! I thought I'd outgrow being a sloppy eater....evidently not. LOL I don't use an apron but I'm going to start. My grandma used to wear one that covered her like a sleeveless dress. That's what would be most practical for me rather than the ones that just cover you from the waist down. Totally agree about wearing clothes more than once. I'm convinced the reason some people have so much laundry is because they're generating more than necessary.

There is a bar soap in the laundry aisle called fels naphtha. Wet the spot and rub the bar directly on the stain. It’s like $1.00. It’s gotten out everything I’ve used it on. Great for my budget and my clothes

Hi Jennifer. I actually enjoy doing laundry. My husband has rigged up a rod for me to hang clothes from and I have a clothes drying rack. I like to soak the under things in sanitizer. Then I wash as usual. I hang most clothes ( if I'm not concerned about wrinkles or it's wrinkle free) on the rod. All undergarments and socks get hung on the rack. I'm not sure but I think the heat from the dryer can deteriorate the elastic. I hang as many items as I can. Saves on wear and tear on the clothes and electric for the dryer. I can't wait to hang my laundry outside again. Welcome spring!

I do, too, Kelly ! I actually enjoy doing laundry. It's one of my favorite of the chores. And I hang our laundry outdoors as much of the year as possible. I hang it indoors when the weather is too cold. Totally agree w/you.

I was just going to comment about the laundry bag and then you said it! It really helps not overstretch the undergarments. And I have been doing the same with using the lower water level and shorter time cycles for washing clothes. Like it isn't that dirty to need 2x the amount of time in there 🥰 great video Jenn.

Great tips Jennifer! I would like to add that hand mending clothing has become a trendy way to make clothes last longer, save money and keep clothing out of the landfills. As a knitter, my hand knit socks, sweaters, hats, scarves and shawls all last longer than purchasing from the store. Plus, knitting provides other positives in my life and it is cheaper than therapy. I learned how to sew and knit from Grandmother. She would be proud to know I continue practicing the art of frugality.

Hi, Jennifer :) I agree about washing your clothes less often and choosing shorter wash cycles and cool water to reduce fading. Someone once said that the lint trap in the dryer is actually the dryer "eating your clothes." I know it's practically unheard of in the US, but we don't own a dryer anymore. I've noticed that it is true that the heat of the dryer lends to shrinkage, wear and tear, static, and even wrinkles. Plus, the meter no longer runs like mad so that's money saved on utility bill, too :) Laundry never sets in a basket after drying bc it has already been hung up straight after the wash cycle. ( no wrinkles ;) So no stale clothes to relaunder. It's not traditional, but it works for us😊 I also use natural and higher quality laundry powder. It's a bit pricier but it smells less intense, has less chemicals and is less abrasive. The brand that I use only calls for 1 tablespoon😉😯 And I also use a mesh laundry bag for underwear, esp bras. P.S. I can't "think" when I cook or bake without an apron on. My mom makes them and she has made me one like you've described.

You are RIGHT !!! I agree w/you 100%.

I hand wash many delicate items, especially sweaters, it saves them from wear and tear. I use a bar of Ivory soap (which we use in our showers and sinks anyway) to get out stains. Also, a fabric steamer will allow you to refresh your clothes after wear, so you don’t need to wash as frequently. The steam kills bacteria and gets out the wrinkles. Great video,

I'm going to add something....I agree about zipping zippers before something is tossed into the washer.....but as for buttons, I unbutton them. Buttoned buttons can pull on the button holes. If the garment is turned inside out, tho, this can protect buttons Boy, that's using the word button a lot !! HA HA HA

I love the video, I do most of the stuff. Plus I don't use laundry softener at all. It is a waste, it does nothing. If I want my clothes to smell good I use regular perfume or I put pieces of soap into the cabinet for towels, etc. Some people use alternatives to laundry detergent like ivy or chestnuts (soaking in water to get sopanine out of the stuff", then only using the liquid) but I personally am too lazy for it

Jennifer ! My bottle of plant-based Puracy stain remover is low, so! I decided to give Dreft a try. There are lots of stains I want to try it on yet,.....but ! I've gotta tell you, so far what I've tried it on has impressed me Big Time !! So, if anyone is reading this, believe her....Dreft is a terrific stain remover. We got the Stage 2-Active Baby one. @@THEJENNIFERCOOK It makes me happy, too ! I can't stand stains. And the soles of my sox always get filthy. I have tried so many products trying to get them clean but nothing has worked. Sometimes they'd look less dirty...but that wasn't good enough. After letting Dreft sit on my sock soles, then washing them regularly, my gosh ! They look really good ! What I'm anxious to try it on, too, are mysterious yellow stains we get on all sorts of things. Haven't a clue what they are ....but nothing has gotten them out....so far. We'll see if Dreft can do it ! Believe me, if Dreft can get those stains out, I am going to be one super happy lady !!! Stay tuned!

I found putting white vinegar with a few drops of essential oils in the rinse cycle will keep my family's clothes looking brighter and prolong the life of the clothes. Also hang dry jeans and other items to help keep the fibers from breaking down. Dryers are harsh on a lot of clothes.

Cobblers apron. I get mine from Woman’s Within. Plus sizes. And Etsy. Made by people who sew which I do not🙃even at 71. Thank you Thank you for these great tips. And what I wish my grown daughter don’t do. Sort Wash tops with tops. Bottoms with bottoms. 🌟🌟💕💕

When washing I always use the shorter cycle unless something needs extra help. Then the soak cycle is added. I agree we don't get super dirty or need to wash jeans every wear. And luandry bags are a must for delicate or super small items I don't want to lose. As for missing items, I've seen videos of dryers being opened up and piles of missing socks found! Could your dryer have a similar gap?

I do most of the ideas you shared, but the new one for me is washing all my clothes on the gentle cycle. Unless I do yardwork, I will hang my outer clothing on a hook near my closet to air dry and then hang them in the closet. This way I can wear them another time. Undergarments get washed after each use on the gentle cycle, but now I am going to wash all my clothes on the gentle cycle unless they are wore during yardwork. Thanks for sharing!

Today, I washed all my clothes on the gentle cycle and it took less time to do 6 loads of laundry. Clothes were clean and fresh as always. Thanks for the tip!

Great tips Jennifer 👍 I use the quick wash cycle and delicates and wash mostly on a lower temperature, but I hadn't thought of doing the zips and buttons up. Re the lost things in the washing machine, I had the same issue with socks at one point and couldn't work out where they had gone 🤔 I used to joke that the washing machine had eaten them, this continued randomly until I had to have my washing machine fixed and after the repair guy had then the machine apart I discovered that they had somehow made it out of the drum of the machine and into the drainage area of the machine which was part of the reason for it not working properly, mystery solved 🤣

Hi Jennifer, I find that Zout stain remover works even better than the Dreft stain remover (which I purchased and tried recently. Zout is now my favorite of all time.

2 things we do with our laundry….. we don’t wash our jeans after every use.what put our jeans outside on porch to freshin up with the sunshine and fresh air…. The other thing I do is hang dry all our clothes BUT I hang dry all our shirts with pant hangers, upside down. I cant stand hanger marks in the shoulders of our shirts so I hang from the bottom seam and let them air dry.

Thank you Jennifer, but I assume this video is for those who have soft water and front load washers? Our water is hard and we use more detergent actually as the clothes were not getting clean. Our 4 yr old Maytag top loader only agitates 5 min no matter what cycle and usually the water never covers the clothes so they come out with the same food or whatever was on the clothes before. I usually go through the clothes and make a rewash pile. So I had thought of a front loader in the future. Do they really make that much difference in cleaning? The cost was always a factor for us but maybe they would be worth it to have clean clothes.

We put sweaters in a laundry bag for the wash but we take out to dry.

In that case I think you probably have to wash each time. Just like a construction worker or someone who does high intensity exercise. In that case you may not be able to use that one tip, but the other tips could still be used to increase the longevity of your clothing.
