Closing the pay gap in women's football | 7.30

Matildas superstar Sam Kerr has seized the spotlight to push for more funding to develop the next generation of Matildas. From the grassroots to the world stage, women are still worse off than their male counterparts, as Jason Om and Emily Jane Smith explain.

Why is it so hard for people to admit that they shouldn’t get paid like the men. Here a simple way to explain, if you are going to pay for advertising for your business, would you want a hundred people to see it or a million?? It’s that simple and why women will never get paid more unless they show their game is more physical, skilful and exciting.

Women A-League players get paid poorly BECAUSE NO ONE GOES TO THE GAMES! All these people watching football for the first time and getting on the Matildas bandwagon who fire up over this issue need to be asked, "when was the last time you went to an A-League game?" The money to pay them has to come from somewhere. In most professional sports it comes from game attendance, TV and merchandise (jerseys mostly). If no one is going to watch the games, turn on their TV or buy a jersey then there is no extra money to pay the players. It is really very simple. The Matildas deserve to be on the same money as the Socceroos because they generate that revenue. They are delivering a product people for which are prepared to pay money. I would suggest most people watching the Matildas at the World Cup were doing so for the first time. How else do you explain the massive crowds? If they truly love women's football then they will now go to A-League games which will generate more money to pay players. This is not some conspiracy to suppress women. It is simple economics. Supply and demand. If people want to watch Women's football then they will pay for it.

I googled the Matilda's wages. They start on 100k a year. That automatically puts them into the top 10% of Australian incomes. Thats 20k a year more than i earn. I have a mortgage an a house to maintain. Your a pack of liars if you say you cannot live on 100k a year.

@@luns486they aren't entitled to a liveable wage unless their competitions can provide it. Maybe if all the people out there complaining about the wages all went to the games, buy the jerseys and watched them on TV, they would then be able to earn a liveable wage. The men's competitions had to build up to that over decades, and this is despite having far bigger crowds than most women sports get.

Why the differential? - Simple .. Bang for buck experience for the punter & advertisers. The fans dictate the outcome. Men provide a superior sporting outcome. All the females have to do is get as good as the mens competitions (in any sport) and you'll get the equivalent money.😐

"All the females have to do is get as good as the mens competitions (in any sport) and you'll get the equivalent money." Actually they don't even have to do that. What they fundamentally have to do is provide an entertainment option that is as entertaining as what are perhaps more established or successful sports. U.S. college football and basketball, for instance, are much more popular than professional leagues of the same sport because the pageantry, tradition, the tie to academic institutions, the young age of the athletes, the fact the athletes are also students provides a value proposition to the consumer that the consumer will watch what is objectively an inferior product. I do feel, in having these discussions, a lot of women's sports leagues are reluctant to have the kinds of conversations that will allow their sports/leagues to better compete with other men's sports/leagues entertainment-wise that could potentially boost their popularity without having a knee-jerk "that's sexist" reaction to things like different playing surfaces or uniforms that better flatter the players bodies while still respecting that they are athletes and not models. In recent years (in North America for instance) men's sports leagues like the NBA, NHL, MLB, and NFL are constantly changing their rules, uniform, look in order to compete against each other and other forms of entertainment (pitch clocks, in-season tournament, ads on jerseys) despite backlash from sports purists.

I personally think the Matilda's should get less than the Socceroos unless they can bring in the same or greater revenue consistently. The pay equality debate doesn't resonate with me at all - didn't even watch the video to be honest, just here for the comments. So here we are - does the OP think before writing a comment. The weird thing about pay discrimination when it comes to sports is that almost no where else in society do we make that argument on a "separate but equal" stance. QANTAS doesn't have a male and a female CEO who only work with only men or women respectively, they are the CEO and so paying one less than the other can certainly be pay discrimination. If a female player played on the Socceroos and wasn't paid like her Socceroo teammates were in Qatar because she was a woman that's pay discrimination. As such, the Socceroos and Matildas are two separate teams and entity's and so the argument becomes a little more difficult/complex/and nuanced.

It's NOT even about the skill level. Yes, women's football plays at a lower level than men's football but it's NOT even about that. It's purely based on how much revenue you can generate from the consumers. It's market determined to the core. Answer me this, how many feminists who wants pay equality for women footballers have actually spent money to watch the women's A-League? How many? Maybe it's about time they put their money where their mouth is instead of telling others how they should spend their money.

I agree, skill level is actually an irrelevant argument that people against equal pay tend to make when actually it's irrelevant as you rightfully state. People watch lower skilled over high skilled leagues all the time providing the product overall (due to in-game fan experience, established brands, tradition, marketing, etc.) is more attractive to the consumer. This is the entertainment business and so pay and revenue discrepancy is fluctuates between entities in the same part of the industry (e.g. Taylor Swift makes more than Shawn Mendes, etc.). U.S. college football is much more profitable than Canadian Football League football despite the CFL objectively being the higher skilled league. Ditto U.S. college basketball and the G League or even NBL. The coaches in the NCAA for both sports make more money and with NIL deals in place the top players make more money (albeit only in endorsements) than pro players playing their sport. Hell, female U.S. college basketball players actually choose to prolong their college careers because playing in the NCAA is a more profitable proposition than the WNBA.

If the Club Benefits scheme was made equal, the women's game would generate profit, female footballers could be contracted for 52 weeks a year and be paid properly too. It wasn't mentioned here but the Salary Cap for an A-League Women club is $600k for ~20 players. That's $30k for 35 weeks, equivalent to about $45k a year. In other words, not enough! The Matilda's, most of whom play overseas, may be on $100k+ but equality is about everybody, not just those at the top.
