From Jake ~
Well, it's been 2 and a half years since I started this project and we're finally at the finish line. I just want to say thank you to all who have patiently been waiting for Closed For Storm to come out. I absolutely understand that the process of getting this movie out has been long and well beyond my expectations. But regardless, we are here and after a lot of very hard work from everyone who has been involved with it, here it is. Thank you so much for watching.
Synopsis ~
15 years after Hurricane Katrina sits a lasting monument of the devastation. Six Flags New Orleans is currently sitting abandoned, rotting away in the Louisiana swamp. Closed for Storm explores the past, present, and future, to find out how this incredible theme park became frozen in time and left in an endless void of uncertainty. This is the first feature length documentary from Bright Sun Films and the directorial debut for Jake Williams.

@@5roundsrapid263 As a New Orlenian living in Baton Rouge at the time with a ton of family in NOLA. It's always bugged me how little attention southern MS received. I vividly remember visiting Biloxi, Long Beach, & Waveland a few months after the storm. Near every structure within a quarter mile of the coast was wiped of the map. Entire graveyards, homes, shops, restaurants, casinos, churches all washed out to sea. Not to forget the inland damage. NOLA was in a uniquely apocalyptic situation given the loss of life, but as far as sheer damage goes. What MS experienced was easily on par with NOLA.

@@WFKIV Exactly. I grew up inland, and it was bad there. I went to Biloxi a few months later, and it was shocking how bad things still were. New Orleans was hit by 8-10 feet of water, but the MS coast had 25-30 feet! More evacuated there and lived, because they’d had many more direct hits over the years.

Anything connected to Katrina I think will always remain a rough subject for those here in Louisiana. We were disregarded and pushed aside, and many people and places suffered because of it! This is an amazing way to give light to that though, and I think is necessary. It’s a beautiful work!

Definitely want to see this! This is true nostalgia for me. I went to Jazzland and I worked for six flags from summer 2003 till 2 days before Katrina. I was preparing to open paradise hotdog that morning right before the park was scheduled to open we shut down due to the weather. They made us take down umbrellas and signs that would fly away. At the time I thought we were just shutting down for the weekend. We knew it was a hurricane coming and yeah the city floods, but no one expected the levee to break. I knew exactly how high the water was from looking at the SpongeBob ride. My last job and last weekend living in New Orleans.

As always, you approach the subject with no melodrama, just good storytelling that covers why these places get abandoned, the facts of the financials (ugh--the waste!), and the tragedy (particularly in this case) of the lives and neighborhoods impacted. The visuals were stunning. Bravo!

Not that I wasn't expected to be but the way u managed to capture a scene about the loss the city went through but still show the love between the community and people after is so touching. The scene when the couple started hugging after walking through their house that was practically not there anymore had me in tears for a few seconds. The only thing I could've wished for is the exploration of the park to be longer. I told you I was going to buy this documentary and I did (absolutely top, btw) You are one of the pillars of the Urbex community and I’m so happy you can now share this hobby with even more people. Your videos are an excellent reminder to be thankful when we get to visit a museum, an amusement park, a resort or mall. All of those places will one day be empty for good, reclaimed by nature or knocked down. Even places like Disney World will one day close their doors, it’s not going to be today or tomorrow, it might not even be for several life times, but it will happen. It’s kinda sad, that the places we love won’t last forever, that one day the settings of our treasured memories will be neglected or destroyed, but it also makes me feel lucky. Thanks for reminding me that we all got one go around on this big stupid ball and I’m happy my turn had rollercoasters and indoor plumbing instead of the Black Death or a Mongol invasion.

I thought about what it would be like if a hurricane took it out ( obviously Florida gets a lot of them, and we're even waiting for one to hit at this very moment) . We would be absolutely gutted. I practically grew up there. I have memories from every pivotal point in my life, including bringing my son. If it was no longer there, or worse, fallen to disrepair, it would be beyond heartbreaking. I felt a sense of loss for those people who no longer have access to the place that gave them so many good memories. I have always had an interest in Six Flags New Orleans as well. The one event that sparked my interest came when I was waiting in line to ride Batman: The Ride at Six Flags St. Louis. They had to redirect the line further underneath the building where you get get on the ride. Under that building is actually cars from a Six Flags New Orleans roller coaster and they even say, "New Orleans" on the back of them. When I worked at Six Flags St. Louis I actually asked about them and they said those cars were one of the few products that were deemed "possibly usable" so they loaded them on flatbeds and shipped them north. I believe they are there to be used for spare parts. I do not know if those cars remain under that building to this day, but it was certainly fun to see them and to know their legacy.

Just watched it on vimeo since the other platforms wouldn’t allow me to stream it in Finland. It was a true masterpiece. Never has over an hour gone by so fast. I have waited for and anticipated this experience since you first revealed your project and to say the wait was worth it would be an understatement. I have watched every single video you’ve released, and admiring your progress as a film maker has been nothing short of incredible. I still remember my comment getting hearted and replied to by you on one of your first short documentary videos with a couple of thousand views. It was amazing how you connected and listened to your audience and to think that you still do is incredible. Thank you Jake! Looking forward to many future projects and videos from you.
