Close Encounters with Beluga Whales

A Pod of Beluga Whales approaches our kayaks, then things begin to get physical as they interact with us and push our boats around like toys. This is the Saguenay Fjord in Quebec Province, Canada.

    Think about it this way. For some people the potential for profit and getting ahead in the world outweighs all else. If they see that they can make a shitload of money by putting some Belugas in an amusement park, they'll do it.

    @@bloodymary12100 Yeah it is, but no one has really made laws prohibiting this so I guess there's not much we can do. I mean someone could always run for office on the issue but it's a bit of a niche issue for most people and they probably wouldn't get elected.

Their vocalizations remind me of toddlers. Lol. Oh and thank You for just having natural sounds of video and not adding music, or yelling and screaming your excitement. That drives me nuts. Also it makes the experience all about the human and not about the wonder they are seeing. Nature is so much ore enjoyable in the quiet, imo. 🐳💕

    Just a few mile up the Saguenay the surface water is fresh, a few feet under there is a halocline, then the water is salt. The depth of the salt varies throughout the year. A few years ago I was with some friends maybe 8 or ten mile upriver, maybe further, and the salt layer started at about 30 feet. I wonder how the animals are affected by the buoyancy changes - it certainly would make floating at the surface more difficult for them. Of course they can simply return downstream towards the St. Laurent if they tire. I would assume they are after concentrations of food - likely baitfish. Greenland sharks also frequent the Saguenay. I'm not sure it is completely understood why.

    SRSLY? I was an anthro major. I would have gone into marine biology if I'd lived near a school with available spots in that course. I know better than to stick an animal in a cage for entertainment. We can learn a great deal by reaching a common ground and working to understand each other's vocalizations and body language. These are the world's southernmost population of belugas, which, other than these whales, are an entirely arctic animal. This population is on a fast track to extinction, as the animals are considered the world's most contaminated with industrial chemicals, primarily pcb's, and dioxin from a variety of industries in the Great Lakes region, Montreal and Quebec, and mercury and lead from the aluminum smelter in the city of Saguenay, upstream from where this video was filmed.

  • @deandeann1541

    @deandeann1541

    The male belugas in this population have a low life expectancy due to liver cancer etc, the females love longer as their bodies are able to remove some of the toxins by concentrating it into breast milk. The animals are not very fertile, and what young they do have often die before they are grown, it is thought the toxic milk is killing them. It's a grim picture.

Often we would have to wait for them to move away from an area before we could jump in. They are interesting animals - the only cetatians with a mobile neck. At any time of the year I would suggest wearing a wetsuit. The Waters of the saguenay rarely reach above 52 degrees Fahrenheit. That shouldn't deter you. It should prompt you to ensuring that you have the proper equipment before you go

    The location is within the saguenay fjord national Park in Quebec Canada. The whales are here year-round although they do migrate within a few hundred miles in winter

    Saguenay National Park, Quebec. Yes, these whales call the St. Lawrence and Saguenay Rivers their home.

    This Cruel Inuit hunting of Belugas must be put to an end. Belugas are one of the most friendliest dolphins towards human beings. I watched a video of these Inuits latching on the beluga with a harpoon, and the beluga is bleeding while trying to escape, and also, killed a whole pod of belugas, which is the type of hunting that is unlike how the red man hunts one buck to feed their whole entire tribe. Inuits are overhunting belugas, indiscriminately, just how they overhunted the Steller's Sea Cow into extinction.
