    @barevids nice work man. Crazy how simple JL amps can be to repair. Then, sometimes, they can be a nightmare. Those HD amps don’t like being clipped and ran hot. That’s how my old HD750.1 got fried. Friend of mine burnt up my amp. When the amp gets hot, it lowers its power and when it’s safe to run, it will give you peak power again. The little LED is a status light that changes color to let you know. Bet the owner ran the amp hot and kept turning up the knob till it couldn’t take it anymore. Love the new style of video work though. We need a live one day friend.

    If the board has a lot of thermal mass from multiple layers of internal power and ground planes, use SRA / low melt solder to remove through hole components. They will literally fall out of the board very quickly using much less heat. I have to do this when working on any through hole components on modern computer motherboards, Xbox's , PS4s/PS5s, etc. The boards are just too thick and will suck up heat like a sponge, even with a powerful iron you will be there forever.

    Exactly. I put a heat gun on low temp 5 inches away to evenly heat the board and lovely Pb lead solder to reduce the melting point. Flux is always helpful. RoHs THIS!

    JL is such a cool company. They are the only ones to this day that I know of that do their rated power, no matter what from 14.4 down to 11.5 at 1.5-4ohms. (Did the test in my car myself. Of course, I don’t do that daily. I usually don’t drop below 12.3 on my setup. I’ll do a walk around of my setup one day on my channel.) Which means, even on a stock electrical, it will do its power as efficient as a 3-5k with all the upgrades necessary to keep your current up, and voltage up. This is why I run JL in my car. Expensive, but I guess the cost of all of the alternator, runs of 0 ga, and batteries I would need to have, just to have the same output from a 3-5k, balances itself out. And, I can move them from car to car without having to buy all the listed above, just to have a 3-5k amp run safe and not stress the power supply of other amps. Those with Perry’s guide knows, that the 1000/1v1 amps have a potential of 300 plus peak to peak rail. Be careful with those JL amps. They are more powerful then you think.

    @@coolstreetman thanks for the referral, but I know of all of the channels that do amp dynos. I’ve seen the 1st run of the dyno setups on Tony D’Amore channel, (designer and founder of the SMD dyno and tools) over 10 years ago. As for the amps doing their rated power, yes I know some of them do. Thing is, they require a lot of voltage at higher ohm loads. In other words, a 1200w at 4ohm amp, which most likely will be around 4500w amp at 1ohm or more depending on the components and amp design and type. Most wire their amps at low ohm loads. Which in return, require a high current to do rated power, where as JL doesn’t matter from a 1.5-4ohm load because it has a regulated power supply that controls the current which keeps the the power balanced across the ohm loads listed. Example, if I wire a 4 ohm sub to a JL amp (R.I.P.S. Line of amps Slash and HD amps) , it does it’s peak power 1,000/1,200w. If I wire a 1.5ohm sub, or a 2 ohm, or 3 ohm, it will do its peak power from 14.4-12.4v safely. If you get a 4,000w amp that is 4,000 at 1 ohm, if you wire it to 4 ohms, most you will see is 1,000w or a little bit over or less at 14.4 and when the voltage drops, so does your wattage. Downwards of 600-800w depending on your current and voltage. You won’t see 4,000 watts at 4 ohms. That’s the difference.

    You are moving the goalposts. The other amps still do their rated power at whatever ohm load. It literally says in the amps advertising what the different ohm load rated power. 8,4,2,1. I'm an electrical engineer there is nothing special about how JL makes their amps. You are just a fan boy trying to sound smart. You think JL has some secret sauce on voltage stabilization? You really don't know what you are talking about. You are probably someone that thinks that apple products are inherently better because they cost a ton of money. There is no patent for circuit board designs so the JLs aren't special because even them are copying someone else's designs. Now if you want to talk about the build quality of JLs Subwoofers we can have a conversation because they make high quality subs.

  • @barevids

    @barevids

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Curt! Typically, with SPS in car amps, power supply PWM duty cycle is fixed, so as the input voltage changes it directly affects the rail voltage generated at the rectifiers on the secondary, which will change the clip point of the amplifier so yes it directly affects power output. Quite a few amps have regulated power supplies that vary the duty cycle of the power supply mosfets, which can keep the rail voltage at a fixed level. Its essentially sandbagging at higher voltages to stay within power and voltage design limits of the output section.

    How easily will clipping cause death of caps? I was wondering with my SD8K 2Ohm evo2.1, can I set the gain to 126V at -5dB and have it clip at peaks, while obviously watching that voltage won't go under 12V? I only have a 160A alt, 6x40Ah AGMs but also 2000F of supercap banks. Re of the sub is 1.4Ohms, Imp rise at Fc should be 2.5Ohm and at 100Hz, 1.7Ohm. I have in the past come to the conclusion that -5dB sets a good volume level with not too much clipping at full volume, but the SD is a lot more powerful and sensitive than my earlier Korean amps. Also, while I set the gain, the fan comes on right with the clipping light. Does it also come on with temperature or just clipping?

    if the amp is clipping on the "kick" or impulse of the bass note only, and NOT on the tone/sine of the bass notes, then your LPF is TOO HIGH. For Brazilian amps, all of the knobs on the side should be at minimum, other than the gain. Then, an additional LPF should be set on the head unit or processor to around 55hz. You dont want a flashing clip light on the kicks, so if you do, reduce LPF until clipping comes on equally for kicks and tones throughout the track.

Not at full power yet, just testing. Are you saying I should have a 12dB/oct filter from around 55hz and 24dB up from 80hz? I usually set the gains with a 50Hz .wav sine wave file. That would make the bass sound even less flat, It's a custom sundown nsv3 18 in a trunk wall tuned to 25Hz. The lows with that kind of filters would be overwhelmingly overpowering compared to the mids? I do have 12s with 500W each in the doors, but they can't keep up from 55hz that well. Or do Brazilian amps have such a roll off at the lows, that they don't get the same voltage than kicks? If so, what would be the best way to ensure constant voltage over the entire pass-band?

    @@barevids Well the Mosconi I have is for sound quality and it sounds great. Expansive but it works. In my question best being a good sound with reliability to match. New to you channel, I like what you're doing. Good stuff.
