Making you realise how ported boxes actually work

The info is grossly simplified to gain a base idea and understanding of the fundamental principles and not all the examples given work exactly how they are presented, but it's the idea and way of thinking that's important.

Small correction. When the frequency is higher than the port tuning, like you show in 8:49 what happens is that the inertia of the air mass in the port makes system act like a sealed enclosure and that gives some control to the cone and limits excursion. Under the tuning frequency there is no help from the box like you mentioned. Thanks for the great video!

Assuming you mean bandpass enclosures, they follow the exact same laws of physics explained in the video. The only difference is that they include a steep rolloff above their tuning where a conventional ported alignment does not. And to clarify my first statement, conventional ported alignments are 4th order enclosures.

  • @MyBlowncobra

4th order is the benefits of both sealed and ported in the same enclosure....6th is 2 ported boxes tuned to different frequency..one side is high the other is low so you get the benefits of all ranges..down side of both boxes is they require more air space...

  • @BrandonBuckaudioanarchy

@@MyBlowncobra No. Bandpass enclosures aren't the best of both worlds, they're a world of their own. They are purposefully bandwidth limited alignments and limiting bandwidth is seldom a best of scenario. They're useful for high SPL builds or as natural low pass filters but that's mostly a bygone use since we now have very accurate and dependable electronic crossovers. They are by their very nature, bandwidth limited alignments and as such you do not "get the benefits of all ranges" with them.

No. Band pass literally means a relatively narrow passband. It is impossible to design a bandpass enclosure with the bandwidth of any other alignment. You can design a bandpass with wide bandwidth relative to other bandpass enclosures but you will always be faced with the upper end roll off that you don't have with other alignments.

It might be helpful to add that the reason why you're able to produce such huge excursion in a port with such little energy is resonance. Everything has an F0 or, resonance frequency and that's the frequency at which the thing vibrates the most with the least amount of input energy. I think one of the most useful visual representations of the power of resonance is the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows bridge. The bridge does fine in the wind until the wind causes it to oscillate at its resonance and then, almost suddenly, it self destructs. The same thing can happen to your subs in an enclosure that's improperly designed.

The easiest way to deal with the lack of damping below the port tuning is by using a very steep HPF below the port tuning, but that adds group delay (which ported or passive radiator alignment as a 4th order system already has more than a sealed alignment, which is 2nd order).

I have seen video footage of winning one note wonder SPL vehicles. Craig Butler actually uses 2-4 digital designs 18s in small sealed boxes made of a wide diameter tube. So I can only guess they are tuned to resonate at 70-ish Hz and then the rest of the cabin is designed to resonate - either by standing wave or some sort of bandpass to the exact same frequency, creating that huge one note wonder bass.

@@n8skow I'm not quite sure because there is no port to the outside on Craig Butler's video to make the cabin into a front bandpass chamber. You'd have to make a substantial opening to get that big area to resonate at ~70Hz. Making the cabin a half wave and trying to get the sound wave to rebound at the woofers and the mic, so the woofer loads agains maximum air pressure might give some good SPL, especially with a sealed chamber that resonates at the same frequency.

That is great explanation. 👍 Ported design is fun. A natural development in our life long hifi journey is one day we discover that ported designs is FUN but less HiFi. Air is compressible and if we are looking/listening in the time domain when woofer go in the air is first compressed then is escaping the port and make sound. And that is happening AFTER that the note and the cone has played the note. So signal and real event is happening and the cone moves then AFTERWARDS the port makes a sound. WHEN port makes sound that has nothing with the signal from the recorded event that has already been and past. In the opposite with IB/OB/sealed we get the signal and the direct sound from the woofer when the it is happening. So no smearing afterwards in the time domain. That enable us to hear texture and tone and therefore is more HiFi in its real meaning. But ported design is more fun and impressive sounding and who do not want to have fun? 😉🎶👍🥳🎵😍

Your explanation verifies the approach at which subwoofer to get determined by the rear subwoofer cone that shouldn't be blocked by the subwoofer frame or basket. For instance CAB 18s and Mmats 12 Juggernauts. Get the picture?

Wow I feel soo much smarter now!!! So if the port is bigger it can create more pressure?

Sam doesn't use parables. He gives a direct illustration with elementary concepts that anyone can absorb an apply. Granted, high end animation is awesome, ...still waiting on that transmission line illustration, and pros and cons thereof.

Can you explain how this can be applied to band pass enclosures

Like he said, the sealed side acts like an air "spring" so the sub gets help controlling the back stroke. And the front ported side still acts like the ruler, BUT you only get output at the end (port) of the ruler, and almost all frequency outside the port frequency is lost. I can't remember....I think it's a 3db increase at port frequency vs if you erased the sealed side. This gets complicated by are we talking 4th or 6th or X order?

@@ryanwaege7251 when I made the comment I was thinking about a 6th order and how both sides being ported would affect the sub movement

@@StarBoimuzic I was going to guess that, didn't want to assume! Take his example of his fingers holding a ruler but add a second ruler pointing up/opposite the first one. Front and rear chamber (ports) both amplify output at the port frequency/ resonance, reduce output at other frequencies. No cone output, just port. Keep in mind, while the sub hardly moves at port frequency, everywhere else it is working against the enclosure. In other words, excursion, lots of it, usually followed by blown sub. Because bandpass also obscures the sound of the sub's coils performing ritual suicide. Ask me how I know. 😁 Of course, you also clip the amp for max gains in a competition. It all increases those dBs but like a tuned engine it becomes more fragile because of the increased output.

Forgot - because of the out of port frequency issues with the sub, always pair a bandpass box with a band pass EQ filter that matches. High and low pass to keep the sub from killing itself.

@@StarBoimuzic Read your reply again, specifically how it affects sub movement. The sub will again move less the closer it is to the port frequency. I only saw 6th order in competitive setups where both sides were tuned the same but I gather you can actually tune them different so you can make 2 different bumps in frequency response, one from each side. So...like 2 different length rulers.
