Climbing MOUNT PINATUBO (Philippines Active Volcano)

MOUNT PINATUBO - A BEAUTIFUL DISASTER.
The term was coined about the eruption in 1991, casting a previously unknown volcano into the limelight.
Lahar flows decimated communities near the mountain, but it formed a beautiful crater lake that is now enjoyed by so many.
From Baguio I rode to the jump-off point in Capas, Tarlac - and then with my friends from Gears/ARB Philippines we drove up one of those lahar flows, the one that drains the crater lake.
Then it's an hour-long hike to the viewpoint itself - and what a beautiful disaster it was indeed.

As active duty US NAVY at the time, I was stationed at Subic Bay US NAVAL STATION (Naval Air Station Cubi Point, at the Bataan province side of the base) during the eruption. I was there from 1990 until the bases eventually closed down in late 1992. It was a natural event to remember for the rest of my life, 18 hours of pure darkness and chaos all around. Sometime after I retire again for the second time, I would love to visit and make a pilgrimage in honor of my fallen comrade who was the only active duty casualty during the disaster. May he rest in peace.

What an adventure komander. I was born in Angeles city but, never had the chance to go Mount Pinatubo. When I was a teenager, we use to ride our dirt bike to that area but never did we know that is a volcano. Not after it erupted and the US Airforce left due to the destructions it caused. Maybe when I go back to PI I will try to go there. Thanks for sharing your adventures. San Diego, CA.

It was interesting to see how things have changed. I worked at the US Embassy from 1983-87 and 1990 to 1995 making regular trips to Clark and Subic to shop. I had vacationed on Fortune Island at Subic just two weeks before the eruption. I spent a good bit of time up at Subic and Cubi Pt. during the closing of bases there salvaging equipment and supplies to use at our printing center. I have a collection of photos from Clark AFB showing the destruction. Clark AFB was inundated by lahar flowing down the Socobia and evacuated on 24 hours notice with all the personnel evacuated to Subic. It was inundated by 3-4 feet of volcanic ash. Even in Manila was covered with about 5mm of ash. It looked like it was snowing. I had a Mitsubishi Pajero and to deal with the dust equipped it with optional a centrifugal dust separator I ordered from Mitsubishi in Japan. Installed before the air cleaner it spun the incoming air in a small drum and the dust would drop out into a container at the bottom. You might consider adding one to your SUV if not already equipped with one to deal with dusty environments.

Snippet: Keep in mind the edge of the mountains or the cleft is not solid rock but a sandstone, which can easily collapse with strong erosion from salt water, strong winds and torrential rain-pours, overtime, but the big sky above and the big ocean below it -- are the most sought after and costly spot where to build a dreamy home. Any home would be safe enough from vicious hurricanes and frequent inland flooding. I hope you are wearing hiking footwear -- walking in those rugged trenches and Alps. Nice find, general. be blessed. may2024
