Climate change: World's first year-long breach of key 1.5C warming limit | BBC News

For the first time, global warming has exceeded 1.5C across an entire year, according to the EU's climate service.
World leaders promised in 2015 to try to limit the long-term temperature rise to 1.5C, which is seen as crucial to help avoid the most damaging impacts.
This first year-long breach doesn't break that landmark "Paris agreement", but it does bring the world closer to doing so in the long-term.
Urgent action to cut carbon emissions can still slow warming, scientists said.

Like there's not even a point in explaining that if you actually look at the scientific nitty gritty and actually try to define the sexes, its actually a complete cluster with more crazy exceptions than you can imagine. Thats nothing about how anyone feels, thats about the core biology and genetics underneath. So what you're saying is by definition incorrect. What devestating news. This will surely mean increased prices for all consumer goods, even more increased prices for all our utilities, increased travel costs across the board, and is bound to extend waiting times for doctors and dentists across the country. And it's all our own fault 🤦‍♂ ( I knew I should have decommisioned the oil well in my back garden and grounded my fleet of planes but I didn't know _this_ would happen 🤷‍♂)

The game will reference global warming in its radio talk shows and a mission or two will mention it. This will lead to thousands of right wing karens to buy copies of the game with the intent of making a tik-tok video where they shoot the game cartridge with a high powered rifle, leading to an increase in sales of both ammo and the game itself. In the end it's the folks at ammo-nation that win the day!

So I was doing a bit of studying the other day and the idea of the bering land bridge came up which is scientifically accepted to have formed and melted countless times throughout the history of planet Earth. My question is that if vehicle and industrial co2 pollution is causing the seas to rise and glaciers to melt like they tell us...then was it vehicle and industrial co2 pollution which caused previous climate changes and glacial melting tens of thousands of years ago? And before that? And before that? And before that? And if so...is it then quite possible that we just haven't dug deep enough to find evidence of these ancient vehicles and technologies?

Some scientists say that in about 16 years, the entire world's freshwater-supply will likely be gone, one of the reasons being climate-change that's been causing droughts (that have dried out freshwater) and floods that have contaminated our freshwater, and therefore it's no longer freshwater, but instead "dirty water". So, great for "dominicwilliams214" that likely will have nothing to drink, shower in, wash himself in or make food with. If you compare these regions to the Gulf States, the climate of the Gulf is similar, although even drier, but the latter have a much higher standard of living due their wealth of fossil fuels and better social organisation. What the Horn of Africa needs is a good dose of reliable energy from fossil fuels to raise their living standards.

Yes, China is the largest producer of turbines and panels. The reason is you need the cheap energy from burning coal to do that. In just 8 years (prior to 2021) China emitted more CO2 than Britain did since the start of Industrial Revolution that began over 220 years ago! And China plans to vastly increase its coal fired generating capacity. The UK is responsible for less than 1% of global CO2 emissions.

You're exactly right, China itself is responsible for 25% all of earth's emissions, however compare it to the population, 1.4 billion, over 1 out of 7 people live in China, its no wonder they have tonnes of emissions when so many people live there, look at America who owns 25% of emissions with a pop of 337 million, massively lower population yet the same emissions. Its not helpful to play the blame game to other countries, if you add the uks total emissions from pre-ind, we own 5% actually instead of our current 1%, so historically we are to blame as well.

Pakistan Floods: area flooded 8%, much of this short term. 2010 floods were worse. Both associated with La Niña phase during a Northern Hemisphere summer - a natural phenomenon. There is no connection to the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. August 1961 was wetter. For Pakistan's annual rainfall totals the 7-year moving average has barely changed since the 1980s, fluctuating up and down, but with no long term trend. Pakistan has endured major floods long before any significant rise in CO2. Since 1850 Pakistan has experienced 7 major droughts and 6 major floods. Since 1880 there is no trend in excess rainfall or drought conditions over the greater Indian region. I might add the people of Pakistan are also suffering from poverty, bad governance and uncontrolled population growth. In addition in the immediate future they will suffer from the perverse environmental policies of Developed countries that have decided to stop extracting their own energy resources, but will consume the rest of the world's, outbidding poorer countries, like Pakistan, consigning them to darkness and further poverty.

Also interesting is the few days in late summer, August 2023, and now in midwinter, February 2024, when daily temps exceeded 2 degC. However, the real indirect indicators of our state of climate collapse are the 1.2 trillion tons of annual global ice melt (3.3 billion tons/day), the heating 321 million cubic miles of oceans (70 degF), and the 1 trillion tons of evaporating water vapor daily. Even with our global AC on "high", land and air temps continue to set record after existential warnings. C3S predicts ALL of the global ice to melt by 2,138. Then, Venus 2.0?

It's not the temperature that matters, it's the rate of change of temperature, the average temperature of the earth when dinosaurs roamed the earth was 21 degrees compare that to now only being 13.5, so obviously it's a lot colder, however the rate of change had happened over millions of years so ecosystems can adapt in time, we're seeing the biggest rapid change ever in earth's climate history, and its the speed of how fast that change is happening is why its important

The question for me is what is a reasonable sample size of time to look at climate change? A million years? 10 million years 100 million years? If you look at a graph of 50 million years of climate change I would say would give a lot more information and a better understanding of the nature of climate change than a graph that is only for a period of 50 years.

not when the problem is the speed at which the climate is changing. Then you look at the rate of change and notice that last ~200 years has been off the charts. We've also never had 7 billion mouths to feed, so changes this quick can spell disaster.

You make a very good point. Did you know we have only kept accurate temperature records since 1848? Whilst we had rudimentary thermometers prior to that, it was not until then that standard practice and recording emerged. The human condition is that we are like mayflies, we live and die incredibly quickly in global terms and yet feel able to pronounce on the whole of earth's long history. As you so rightly point out, looking at the climate over an extended period, which can be done through ice cores, geology and geography gives a clearer picture. None of this, of course, should be an excuse not to clean our act up, us Humans have turned the planet into a rubbish dump and we should do better.

If you look at what the magnetic poles are doing due to the sun's increase of solar flairs, then climate change isn't surprising, infact you'll have to look back over 12000 years or more to see similar effects, just hope it's not a pole shift and biblical floods 😮

@@paulbiggs5523 I agree that we have made the world a rubbish dump. Many goods are exported to countries that don't have refuse collection and just like Britain 200 years ago people throw all their rubbish in the rivers to wash out to sea. Kids in London have stopped using plastic straws to save marine life but the truth is that's when local councils collect rubbish in London they don't tip it in the Thames. This isn't true in many countries.
