2023 confirmed as world's hottest year on record - BBC News

The year 2023 has been confirmed as the warmest on record, driven by human-caused climate change and boosted by the natural El Niño weather event.
Last year was about 1.48C warmer than the long-term average before humans started burning large amounts of fossil fuels, the EU's climate service says.
Almost every day since July has seen a new global air temperature high for the time of year, BBC analysis shows.

Incorrect. The temperature is still collected from near-surface air, same as it always was. ESA are ALSO using satellites to monitor land temperatures, but have not replaced near-surface data with land data, they are merely collecting extra data. Kudos to the artistic sensibility of the thumbnail person. This could be a painting, it’s so well balanced, with the conflagration on the left beautifully counterbalanced by the 3 firefighters on the right (notice how they are all looking in different directions, providing variation and interest) and the cause of all the trouble centre stage. It’s reminiscent of the way the Old Masters would, almost geometrically, arrange and balance their works. Géricault’s _The Raft of the Medusa_ always springs to mind in this context. 🖼

The climate crisis is real and require immediate action from all people and governments. The costs outweigh the benefits of burning oil. Low carbon technologies are cheaper and allow countries to be more energy independent. It is the fiscally responsible choice to transition away from oil as quickly as possible. Reading these comments, you see the same handful of talking points that the rich gas companies have been pushing for decades. It is in their best interest to distract, deny and confuse in order to exploit their assets as long as possible before the inevitable sharp decline of fossil fuel use.
