Climate Change: Can Psychedelics Help Settle The Debate? | Higher Ground | Channel 4 Documentaries

Ойын-сауық

Higher Ground sees two people with opposing views come together to discuss their beliefs whilst going through a transformative psychedelic experience on magic mushrooms.
In this episode, things get heated when actor and climate denier Sean Ward debates his opinions on Extinction Rebellion with one of their protestors, Duval. Will an experience on psychedelics bring them closer together, or drive them further apart?

The big companies and the individuals all have a role to play in addressing climate change. Love the concept, but I do wish this conversation was a little more constructive. Debating whether or not a factual thing (like climate change, caused by humans) is real just deludes the scientific, objective truth. We don't see these debates about smoking causing lung cancer but here we are with more scientific consensus on human-caused climate change than we even have on that!

It’s wild to see how the medicine affects them differently from a power differential/race standpoint. The white-presenting person on the right, takes the medicine and goes into the “i’m enlightened, the only truth is we are all one. Everyone deserves to be heard, but not this person in front of me because they are questioning this new truth.” Meanwhile the melanated individual seems to accept that they aren’t going to be heard. 🙈 Would love to see this conversation after a few integration sessions.

The climate crisis is becoming a financial crisis. This month, the largest homeowner insurance company in California, State Farm, announced that it would stop selling coverage to homeowners. That’s not just in wildfire zones, but everywhere in the state. Insurance companies, tired of losing money, are raising rates, restricting coverage or pulling out of some areas altogether - making it more expensive for people to live in their homes. Sign up for The Morning newsletter from the New York Times “Risk has a price,” said Roy Wright, the former official in charge of insurance at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and now head of the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, a research group. “We’re just now seeing it.” In parts of eastern Kentucky ravaged by storms last summer, the price of flood insurance is set to quadruple. In Louisiana, the top insurance official says the market is in crisis, and is offering millions of dollars in subsidies to try to draw insurers to the state. And in much of Florida, homeowners are increasingly struggling to buy storm coverage. Most big insurers have pulled out of the state already, sending homeowners to smaller private companies that are straining to stay in business - a possible glimpse into California’s future if more big insurers leave.

@@oldineamiller9007 I don't know, I haven't checked. For the record I'm not vegan, I'm not personally trying to save the planet. However a shoe brand has created a shoe that I like made from natural materials. It's not something I was looking for, however they created it and I decided I wanted to buy it because I liked it. Simple supply and demand. Notice its called supply and demand, not demand and supply. The supply comes before the demand, not the other way around. No one reads my mind. Products are created and if I like them and they are convenient I use and consume them. This dude going on about rubber shoes is trying to say you're a hypocrite if you want to save the planet but you use any product that is created using oil. Then in the same breathe he's going on about having to use paper straws and saying why is it on him to change his habbits, it should be the billionaire's that have to pay the price. That's a complete contradiction from his point about rubber shoes. It IS on big wealthy corporations to stop these terrible polluting and planet destroying practices. If all shoe companies started using natural rubber consumers would buy shoes made from natural rubber without batting an eye lid. Supply and demand. Just like how they stopped making plastic straws and now everyone uses other materials, mostly without batting an eye lid. People that argue that activists shouldn't use any products that are created using oil are idiots making a non argument. Their activism is literally to tell companies to stop making such products. If the companies listened that would be an end to oil use, goal achieved. You can't create a change in society by dropping out of society and becoming a hermit. The billionaires at the top have to accept a financial hit by bringing other products and other ways of doing things to market. And the general public will continue to be happy little consumers with their new oil free products.

@@JakeLDS It's ok if you like these shoes. I know this is an exceptional product as natural rubber is more expensive than artificial rubber. Other than that natural rubber ages faster than artificial rubber. That might be the main reason why it was replaced by artificial rubber. Natural rubber deteriorates faster in sun light. So keeping them in a dark place if you don't wear them will help.

Sean was open, but Duval remained closed off, combative, and defensive. He still harbors resentments that he can't let go of and likely needs a higher dosage of psilocybin. Duval is dictating Sean's feelings and acting like the therapist. His approach to "challenging him" is passive-aggressive, trying to turn a mutual conversation into an interrogation, gaslighting Sean, and dismissing his feelings. Something really terrible happened to Duval because it's clear he has trust issues. Just my observation.
