CliftonStrengths / Gallup StrengthsFinder Top 5 Results | My Experience 3 Times over 15 Years

Curious about whether your Gallup StrengthsFinder results (re-named to CliftonStrengths) change over time? Or maybe how your life experiences impact your StrengthsFinder Top 5? I've taken the StrengthsFinder Assessment 3 times - in my 20s, my 30s, and at 40. In this video, I share what I learned about myself and the StrengthsFinder Test as I got older, matured, and my life's circumstances (and priorities) changed.
Note: The StrengthsFinder Assessment has been re-named to CliftonStrengths by Gallup, Inc. Both terms are used in this video interchangeably and refer to the same assessment.

Tell me about your experience... Do you believe Nature or Nurture has impacted your Gallup CliftonStrengths results? One factor I consider when thinking about this is comparing how I am with how I perceive my siblings to be. I think about the thoughts and actions that I've taken that are SO uniquely me vs. the ones that I seem to share with them (likely influenced by our upbringing). It doesn't explain everything, but it's interesting to reflect on...

Elvira, I am impressed with all of your videos - your comprehensive and personalized approach is a great reflection of your core talents that appear to now be your Strengths! Also, I took the assessment, like you, 3 times over 20 years. There was also a shift in my top 5, but the others still remained in my top 10-15. My understanding is that they rarely will move to the bottom of the 34.

Thank you so much, Leslie for your kind words and comment. It sounds like there’s something about CliftonStrengths that keeps you coming back again and again! 😉 Yeah, I don’t expect a Top 5 Talent Theme to ever get down to the 30’s. I’d imagine it would take drastic life events or change in circumstances for someone’s patterns to change that dramatically!

Thank for for Humanizing this test like you said... i just took it a couple of months ago and really feel lost about it, but very interested like you. In fact Relator and Connectedness is my top 2, which mades it hard for me to not know what to do with these results. I am in the process of transitioning from a stay at home homeschooling mom of 18 years to starting a non-profit thrift store and your talk of traits changing over the years is great.

Thank you for your kind comment, Unusual Momma. Looks like we have the same top 2! I can understand not knowing what to do with those results because they may not be what most consider “constructive” or “practical” talents, but they flavor How you do things… Everything. It’s SO valuable understanding that - and how it differs from others. I actually offer a course that goes in depth on understanding and how to use your results. If you have questions or would like to work with someone, send me an email. Good luck in your transition. 😊

Great video, thank you for sharing. My trajectory was similar. I’ve taken the assessment multiple times over the past 15 years, and have used them extensively with my teams. I’ve noticed the Top 5 usually have common elements, but the mix reflects my priorities at the time, as well as personal growth. I think it’s heavily influenced by nature, but shaped by nurture.

Thank you for your comments, Thomas. I’m glad to hear you use it with your teams and that we’ve had similar experiences with the results! What I love is what the evolving results reveal to us and how we can constructively use them even if they change. The power is is what one done with the info! Let me know if there are any topics you’re curious about or would like to see.

I think I took it the first time in my early 20s, but quickly forgot about it. I think I have taken it 3 times in the past few years. I did recently just because an access code came with a book I wanted from Gallup and I had been made aware of some past wounding, which I had been attending to and I thought, I am seeing myself clearer than ever, so maybe I should take it again. There is some variation, but for the most part, the results are consistent. Mostly strengths just moving up or down one to three slots. I do feel this most recent attempt has yielded results I will stick with and better capture who I am compared to past results. Great videos.

Thanks DJ. I don't expect much change when taking the assessment within the same few years. I usually see a change after many years or after someone's been through life changes - such marriage, divorce, having children, losing someone, change in job, loss of a job, retirement, and more. Basically, change is part of our lives - whether triggered internally or externally. So, I wonder if you wait a bit longer what else will be reveled. Thank you so much for watching and your kind words.

My results changed slightly over the last 5 years. I can see how this correlated to changes going on in my life both times.

That makes sense. And if your results changed slightly, it's likely that your Talent Themes shifted only a bit. They're likely still within your Top 10. 😎

I'm curious about how our talents evolve and the balance of nature and nurture. How do you recommend growing the talents you have while balancing areas for growth?

  • @ElviraMarieChang

To be true to Gallup's definition, the Test measures your predominant patterns pf thought, feeling, and behavior that can be productively applied. It doesn't define or favor whether these patterns came from Nature or Nurture. Really, it's up to you as to what patterns you've developed - either consciously or unconsciously... whether your nature has taken the lead or whether you've been shaped by experience and circumstances. As for my recommendation, the simplest answer I can give in a comment is to be aware whether how you're using your Talents is Helping you or Hurting you. It could be that "areas for growth" are actually areas where Talents are being misapplied... so there's opportunity to do both: grow your Talents and those areas.

Curious to see how my talent themes may change over the years! I think it's a combo of nature and nurture, yet like most things, is forever evolving
