Clifton Hicks - Trouble On My Mind - Clawhammer Banjo
Музыка
Banjo Heritage 👉 / cliftonhicks
The subject matter of this early banjo song involves repeated trips to "the whipping post," something we today rightly associate with the African American experience in this country. I think it's equally important to remember that working-class whites in the Antebellum South were also brutally oppressed, whipped, and even lynched by the slaveholding class.
I learned this piece from George Gibson as "Trouble." Rufus Crisp also recorded it on a track titled "Story of Banjo Contest." See Frank Blevin's "Don't Get Trouble in Your Mind," Doc Watson's "I'm Troubled" and Blue Sky Boys' "I'm Troubled, I'm Troubled" for variants. gDGBD relative (~fCFAC actual).
Once I had an old banjo
Head was strung with twine,
Only song that it could pick
Was Trouble On My Mind!
CHORUS
Trouble on my mind, boys
Trouble on my mind,
If trouble don't kill me
I'll live a long time!
I went down to Lynchburg
To get a jug of wine,
They hitched me to the whipping post
Gave me ninety-nine...
I went back to Lynchburg
To get a pint of gin.
They hitched me to the whipping post
Gave me Hell again...
I went back to Lynchburg
I didn't go to stay,
But I fell in love with a woman
And I couldn't get away...

One wouldn't think the narrator is singing about trouble. Even though he's lamenting trouble, telling us how he got whipped and then later fell in love in Lynchburg, the energy of the performance is of a man ahead of his troubles, not weighed down by them (the blues). And how amusing that the freedom loving narrator likens love to getting 99. He fell in love but couldn't get away. Hahaha. As a historian I love how the character of the people who wrote these songs emerges. These songs are great artifacts of our country's past. One of my favorites Clifton.

Absolutely. Yes. Yes. Yes.
Imagine being an officer in the CSA trying to enforce conscription and you hear this just over the hills, right before the yell of a few hundred very very mad mountian men.
DEAR CLIFTON, YOU ARE GETTING BETTER AN BETTER. IVE NEVER FORGOT YOUR BALLAD OF RITTENHOUSE. AM AN OLD BLUEGRASS BANJO MAN MYSELF.
As much as I adore your playing I have to say your voice is what really gets to me. It's powerful and authentic, I always enjoy hearing you sing. Thanks for sharing!

What a wonderful sound and a profound reflection.
Who would dislike this? This is golden, Cliff!
Nice one. We all got trouble on our minds right now. eh?
Oh boy both version of this rock, but this one has a proper old timer sound to it interesting sound
This share best enjoyed with the accompaniment of a cold snack 🍺 Killer 👍
God bless you sir. With all the chaos erupting in our world, this song really eased my mind.
Wow, I don’t know how I’m gonna get there, but someday I’m gonna play banjo just like Clifton Hicks. I’m gonna practice till my fingers bleed. Thanks for the content and setting the bar high. People like me need people like you to chase after and emulate your skills.
You wear lots of stylish hats. Get you some neck lanyards so you can enjoy that cool forest air. This song is a real earworm, I keep wondering how that twine banjo would sound if it ever sounded. No wondering about wine and gin, though...
Your music always seems to boost morale for me, it has me wanting to learn the banjo so I can help boost morale for others in hard times.
This is the best one you've made yet I think!
Oi there, I for sure prefer the inflections in this one over the past times you've sung this tune, truly some great work
Nobody’s keeping the high lonesome alive like you clif..Sounds great!
Having decided to learn an instrument in my 6th decade on this rotating land mass, for no apparent reason I plumped on the banjo. After some background research and a few basic tunes learnt on a cheap off the shelf resonator, I stumbled across Clifton Hicks and his open back virtuosity on youtube. My life of punk angst has been enriched by the pure enjoyment of old time overhand banjo music that Clifton Hicks delivers. One more time.....
Hi, great song ! Greetings from Brazil !
Dammit I could seriously listen forever
This is #1 on my Spotify atm... you seem to capture something authentic from prohibition era here. Awesome, I love it.
The pose at the end XD
Wow. Just discovered this guy. Just wow.

Absolutely belting! beautiful music Clifton.
Cool!
Fantastic, thank you Mr Hicks😊
Fantastic! Got to learn this one; thanks Clifton. :)
Well done! Very soulful playing and singing. Godspeed
The south was not homogenous as is commonly believed. The mountain folk were opposed to slavery in general. Many communities were mixed; Black, White, Cherokee: Melungeons they were and are called. East Tennessee fought against the confederacy throughout the war. Nashville sent troops at the beginning of the war to stop an East Tennessee secession. You're doing good work, Clifton HIcks.
That was great, Clifton, thanks! You made me tap my ol’ foot, yes indeed!
Beautiful and powerful.
This piece reminds me of "Ain't that Skippin' and Flyin'." Fantastic as always!
Oh yeah, another beauty!
Well done. Timing like a Swiss watch and the singing was powerful. Good vibe here.
I love your phrasing. You have a great tone to your voice. Thankyou

Great job on that one too. Super vocals and banjo. (Maybe don’t go to Lynchburg ) 99 lashes, would leave several marks. Thanks for posting your work!

@@CliftonHicksbanjo Your clawhammer is just awesome. I love it. It looks so well articulated. I'm in med school and I love how your cerebellar memory is well articulated with vocal/hearing and tuning. A lot cerebral areas in your cortex are activated simultaneously while doing this. Reading that you did this while not having a lesson, that is astonishing.
All power to the people brother Clifton! This is beautiful, thanks for doing this.

Yeeee!
What a great performance. Can you please tell me what tuning you are using here, and do you use that tuning pretty much most of the time, or do you use many tunings? Thanks Mr. Hicks!

This is ~ fCFAC (lower equivalent of gDGBD), but I use many tunings: gDGCD, gCGCD, gCGCC, f♯DF♯AD, f♯DGAD, gCGAD, gCGBD, etc.

Я думаю, что это не сложнее, чем научиться играть на гитаре, балалайке или что-то в этом роде.
Where do they breed people like this one right here?! I need to know ! ! I want one ! 😫 ♡♡♡♡♡♡
I love your music. You wore day desert BDUs in one of your vids. Are you the same Clifton Hicks who was given a less than honorable discharge from the U. S. Army?

@@CliftonHicksbanjo I apologize. I come from a military family dating to the 1700's. My son wanted to join the USMC in 2014. We talked him out of it because his mother and I saw what had become of the current military. I spoke irrationally. I am sorry. Forgive me and thank you for your service.
