Clifford Brown's "Joy Spring" Analysis
Here is the first video of my Clifford Brown Series: taking a look at one of his most famous solos - "Joy Spring" from Clifford Brown & Max Roach (1954).
This post talks about two things I love about Clifford's playing: his melodic "Call & Response" approach, and the percussive and intricate articulation he uses on playing double-time lines.
Ultra-Nerdy stuff, I know...but I get alot of questions about some things I learned from his playing, so I hope this helps to briefly explain. I'd say this video is for an 'intermediate' level player. I'll be posting videos for Beginner & Advanced levels as well. Thanks for checking it out, and I hope you enjoy!

It's simply unbelievable how much this guy sounds like Clifford Brown given that no one sounds like Clifford- despite many having tried. It's like listening to Clifford but with modern recording equipment.
Wow I’m not a horn player, I’m a bassist and guitarist and I was jamming on bass along with songs streaming thru my computor on XM satellite station Real Jazz and heard this song Joy Spring and I kept getting lost and just going “woah this is amazing” so I searched for a song analysis of it and found your video. You are amazing. And I got great ideas from you. Thank you.
Iconic jazz solo.
Excellent approach.
thank you!! I've heard that solo so many times but never thought about it as a call and response!!!

Musically passionate, great style, truly competent, to the point. Inspiring Dominick, thank you, Your generous work is much appreciated.
Sir you are truly AWESOME! Love your breakdown...analogy and correspondence so to speak. This piece is a great example (as you mention) that lends itself to the interpretation of the artist. And you sir blew me away. Could listen to you all day...and night! Man I wish I could hang out with your crowd for a day! Much appreciation for taking the time to enlighten us mere mortals! Cheers, D
Thank you so much Mr. Farinacci!
This is kind of stuff i went to Berklee for some 35 years ago and got sidetracked into becoming a semi well known commercial/Big Band lead player. I'm really enjoying your Clifford series! Now, since there are not many gigs due to Covid, I'm back trying to pick up where I left off back then, being a very frustrated "wanna be," jazz trumpeter. I won't quit my day job just yet, but want to see if I can become a more competent jazz soloist as I enter my 60's. Thanks for the inspiration, Dominick! I'm starting to have a plan thanks to you, Charlie Porter and Richie Vitale's series on KZread. I hope the good you're doing. here comes back to you tenfold, you are a wonderful talent!
Hearing that solo brought tears to my eyes.
Been digging into this one. Really appreciate this dissection. Thank you Dom!
Beautiful analysis and playing. Thank you
Dominick. I love your videos and as the worlds biggest Clifford Brown fan, I appreciate how you break down what he was doing! I just had a lesson today with Pat Harbison and he said that you are just a great guy and that you guys had a blast at the competition this weekend. Fantastic stuff!
Beautiful discussion Thanks for the insight!!!

+PaulTheTrombonist Thanks man - love what you do on your channel...especially the stuff with Arturo!
Thank you for these wonderful lessons. I really admire your work and the choice of your repertoire. I was surprised when I found in it a beautiful Brazilian song, by Herivelto Martins, 'Caminhemos'. Very tasteful. All good luck in a wonderful career.
Amazing! Thank you!❤️

to me the conversation sounds like a debate when you put it like that
Wow!
the thing from 4:00 on must be what jazz musicians mean with "turnaround", right?
Fantastic sound. What mouthpiece do you use?
What watch is that if you don't mind me asking?

je ne vois pas l'intérêt d'apprendre par coeur un solo... m'enfin... c'est bien quand même...
Brother sounds great! So in answering a question about if anyone was still writing music based on the rules Leonard Bernstein delineated when analysing a late Mozart Development development section. Immediately thought of Joy Spring. So go to my channel and watch Bernstein on Mozart. Also I guess you can check me out playing this tune 7 years ago.
