Is your car more than 20 years old? You may have slop in your ignition preventing your ignition switch from working properly. I found that my ignition switch worked perfectly by itself, but had problems when connected to the key cylinder. Turns out after almost 30 years the key cylinder had started to wear out, which prevented it from fully engaging the ignition switch. With a couple shims, my problem has been solved for free!
