Clergy on the Rocks | The Bulletin

AI priests, a polarized church, and women and alcohol.
This week on The Bulletin, hosts Mike Cosper and editor in chief Russell Moore talk with David Zahl of Mockingbird about artificial intelligence -- ChatGPT -4.o and AI priests -- and the need for embodied presence and wisdom. Next, they tackle the latest challenge in church polarization, this time in the Presbyterian Church in America. Last, special guest Ericka Andersen joins the show to shed some light on the hidden struggles of women who are alcohol-dependent.

I did not know about the AI priest. That’s crazy and yet not surprising. Also, really enjoyed hearing Ericka’s story. I think alcohol abuse is a big issue that the Church really needs to address and yet seems unwilling. Thank you Russell, Mike and CT for this episode!

Re: the segment on David French (whom I really like), I think our main problem is that very few of us are willing to listen to anything that we don’t agree with. It boils down to narcissism and pride. These two traits are taught against all through scripture. But we tend not to apply scripture to ourselves where we need to the most.

You are playing around the edges, and ignoring the real problem: AI will soon become conscious and very sophisticated (particularly with quantum computing). How will we then distinguish between those digital persons and biological humans?? Moore doesn't understand that AI will be capable of conscience.
