He is an amazing storyteller. A great speaker and writer. If you have not picked up a copy of one of his books, you need to do it! They are hard to put down once you pick them up. I had no idea of his comprehension of military history. Amazing is the only word I have

Bro I was just about to chime in referencing that peter zeihan portion of this discussion Starting at 56:30 or so It makes me wish Mathew Reed still had access to the ears of decision makers. But I listened to that 10-12 min section twice....the occurrences he describes sounds practical to me. If you’re thinking about it in terms of steps that might unfold....perhaps it’s speculation as to what would happen after Europe saw an influx of migration. But I don’t think it’s speculation that that migration will occur due to food/fertilizer shortages Just mean he suspects that migrants flooding into Europe = right wing politicians coming to power over there. In my mind it could just as easily result in extreme leftists taking power in an attempt to integrate them. Either way it’s an easy recipe for dysfunction

Love the take on UFO's and nuclear weapons, there is something going on there, and has been for about 70 years now and yet somehow is STILL being underinvestigated. Andy im sure you knew it when you finished it but that was a top 10 episode, no doubt about it.

Thank you for turning me on to consuming more Peter Zeihan content Matthew Reed. Dear God man, you need to market yourself on social media platforms as an author. You're a ghost. I couldn't even find an independent author's website. And for us GenXers whose vision is failing us, please record your own audiobooks. You obviously love doing voices. Apparently it only takes a week to record a full novel. I wish you all the success at your new career. Great guest that was an entertaining wealth of information.

9:00 that's something Dan Carlin always brings up on his podcasts. How historians always look at the Roman and other ancient wars from a grand strategic POV, but meanwhile, at the end of the day, the guys on the ground were involved in large scale prison brawls. Ugly and personal.

This guy is just action packed with amazing analysis of some pretty broad stroke intelligence. Brilliant podcasts. Definitely gotta listen twice to absorb it all. This will probably be a dumbass question (especially against the backdrop of the episode as a whole) but I've had it for a while. The wearing of the watch so as the face is pointing inward. What's that about? Is it just a not so popular way to wear it or is there actual reasoning behind it? I can't think of a time ever that I haven't worn a watch. As a kid it was just 'non dominant hand, face up, buckle under'.

The Romans taught the people of their outlying regions, aka barbarians, their military tactics because they were in their Army. Those were Roman states and were part of the military not mercs. But still, during the Roman in fighting, they split off and used those tactics to take over their own areas and then expand.

The main weapon of the legion, depending on the time period, v was either a spear or a gladius. The gladius was not 4' long. It was more like 3' long and if you ended up hacking at other combatants with it, shit had gone horribly wrong for you. Ideally they would be shoulder to shoulder with their fellows covering themselves and their neighbor with their very large shields and making short, fast and vicious thrusting/stabbing attacks not slashing. You would have to completely open yourself up to swing a sword in the kind of arc required to slash. That would not only hinder you, but anybody next to you in formation. That's the basic theory anyways. Those people had to have been something else though. You're saying the military is having a hard time getting new recruits? I thought about joining for a long time when I was young. I didn't. I couldn't get past the idea of putting my life in the hands of the government. After 20+years of GWoT, I sometimes regret I didn't serve, but I very much see that I was right about not putting my life in the hands of the government. The people that run this country have not been making good decisions for a very long time.
