Cleaning the Clever Coffee Dripper
This singular thought should take less than a minute. Oh well. If you have a drippy Clever it might need cleaning. And not sure we ever pointed out that it comes apart. Just do it with care! -Tom

Great tip! I usual just rinse and let it dry. Will definitely do this every week or so. Thanks!
Thank you!
TY I never took mine apart. It started to leak today. I took it apart and hope its good now.
Thank you for such a very useful informative video. Tim
good tip. thanks
This is completely wrong. I watched this video awhile back to pickup some cleaning tips for my Clevers and this video single-handedly ruined them. You can't wash them in Oxiclean. It permeates the silica gasket and destroys the taste of your coffee. Makes it taste like detergent. I just had to throw 5 Clevers (literally two days ago) out because I watched this video. I'm not mad, but people need to know that Oxiclean is a Clevers kryptonite. You honestly only need to clean them after a couple months and make sure you do rinse thoroughly after every cup. Staining is perfectly normal just clean (vinegar works fine) when it comes time. Thank you Brian at Sightglass Coffee for your time.
@klarinetta Interesting... I am learning from all your experiments. I have not heard of Euroshopper filters.
@sonnyrants Thanks for noting this - maybe I should re-do it with the #4 clever to make sure we show this aspect...
Thanks! :-)
@klarinetta Do you wash out the paper filter before using. It makes a difference for me...
@klarinetta Yeah and I always get bitterness with 1-3 hole cones that uses flat bottom filters but I can manage it to be much less than with the Clever dripper.
The shaft on mine broke all on its own at 1.5 years old. Had to toss it. However my 14 year old clever is still going strong and I just replaced the silicone valve parts so I am hoping for 14 more years.
@sweetmarias 3/3 What this tells me is that the filter makes a huge difference and can alter the cup almost as much as grind setting,water temperature and pouring technique(as for Chemex and Hario).
@sweetmarias Ok I tried it again and now the finer grinds and it worked much better. Unfortunately I only had brown paper#4 but I will try it again later with white paper. With Hario V60 I can get lighter body as well as a bit heavier If I wished and you can have control over the brew. With Chemex you get the body and acidity but the thick paper makes it harder to get lighter body from it.
@sweetmarias 2/3 finally I tried it with Emma white filter made by Konos GmbH(German company). Much thinner paper and a lot tighter. It takes 1:45-2:00 min for the coffee to drain with this filter. And surprisingly it came down with almost no paper taste(I rinse this with only one full cone of water others with 2 and a half cone of water) and much lighter brew more similar to the white Hario V60 paper. A long with white Chemex I think Hario wins with best balance between robust and papaer taste
@sweetmarias I just saw on the net that Melitta have some filters made out of 60% bamboo. Have you tried it ?
@sweetmarias Where is the 2 cup prototype coming from? What I would like to see is a device like this that brews 6 or 8 cups. I find the 4 cup pretty good for myself, but I can't really brew for others. I guess it would be hard to find filters for larger sizes.
@sweetmarias One thing I wonder is that this is a full immersion brewing but still I saw in another video from you and also from a lot of other people that you recommend medium to even medium fine like you use with the Hario V-60. The brewing time for my technique with Hario V60 is 2:15-2:45 min depending on the coffee I use. Here you let it steep for 3 min and drain for about 1:30min for total 4:30 min so why not coarser grinding like with french press ?
@sweetmarias The brew from Clever dripper was much smoother than from French press,V60 or Chemex but much more flavorful than from the Aeropress. Would really like to try Indonesian coffees with it as I'm not too much fan of heavy earthy tones like I specially get from Sumatran coffees. I also saw another video with Aeropress from Seattle CoffeeGear were coarser ground gave more bitter tones than the finer grind so I think that might be the resaon for my pervious results.
So where do I get one of these new Clevers?
@GuitarzanOO50 Taiwan. Yes.
Two questions; Where are they made? Are they BPA-free? Thanks!
Hey I have one of those from you. I have tried anything from2-3:30 min steeping time and various grind settings but I always get bitterness in the cup how would go around with that. When carefully brewed I never get bitterness with Chemex or Hario V60.
@sweetmarias 1/2 Ok I've been trying this with various filters. I was doing this with I think Euroshopper brown filter(Dutch company that is discount brand of everyday commodities). I brew 12oz for 3 min. and then let it drain. With this filter it takes about 1:30 min to drain and it leaves a very robust taste with some bitter tones and bad paper taste. Then I tried it with brown Melitta filter. Takes about 1-1:15 min to drain,medium robust and a lot less paper taste but still there.
in terms of bitterness - there are a few things that cause bitterness - I would guess that the longer steep time is causing it for you here. I would grind coarser, steep less time. You want to get the right balance with good flavor extraction without bitterness. I would also rinse the filter and be sure the brewer is clean. as dirty brewing equipment can also cause bitterness.
@sweetmarias Oh yeah indeed
Pity. I just broke my No.4 Clever Coffee Dripper before watching this video. Now it wont seal properly. Do you have an ETA on the No.2 CCD???
I decided to do this even though my Clever wasn't leaking. When I pushed the bottom plate out, it brought the rubber ring from the bottom of the cone with it. When doing this, please note which way the rubber ring is situated in the bottom of the cone. I installed it the wrong way and it seemed to fit. Leaked all over my counter top. It needs to be inserted from the top down.
I can't keep the dripper clean, makes a helluva cup, but after a year it looks like hell. Hoping the Bonavita Porcelain Immersion Coffee Dripper does a better job. Thinking the Porcelain will hold up with constant use and clean up a lot nicer/easier. Fingers crossed anyway
Great advice, but boy, you gotta be careful reassembling. Go slow and examine carefully. I broke mine (a shard of plastic came out) putting it back together, but fortunately it didn't affect the function. Mine has to be lined up. Cleaning helped a lot though.
CCD is the best, but not by far. Why? Because the CCD does NOT have the tendency to over extract coffee like the Aeropress. Of course it is not a huge deal since you can always bypass the brew and add water to the Aeropress's cup, but that has been my findings. Both will deliver you phenomenal cups of coffee, clean, delicious, and with body. Aeropress may be better if you intend on traveling as the system is very portable unlike the CCD. Buy both, they are under 30 USD each.
@sonnyrants We haven't discussed larger sizes at all going forward. Maybe we should...
@sweetmarias From Melitta's homepage "An Earth Friendly way to Add More Flavor to Your Life. A Naturally Renewing Resource. All natural Bamboo doesn't impact the flavor of coffee. Made with 60% Bamboo. Fits all 8-12 Cup cone coffee makers. Our double crimped filter design is guaranteed not to burst.
