I would have liked to see in the deck pipe. I’ve seen build up in the deck pipe from this before. It seems helpful for going quickly between jobs.

It works great for lower strength mixes, but for high strength/high chemical (bridge deck) mixes in still going with sponge-water-sponge. Interestingly enough, when travelling dirty to a next job is when I don’t like pulling back all that water is it segregates the mud in the hopper and seizes the S-valve in place. Usually for said situation I’ll just rip one round sponge back and retrieve it through the prime port.

If possible jack the front of the pump as high as reasonable. Give the deck pipe a "down hill" angle, back to the hopper.

Is there risk of concrete being on the bottom of the deck pipe still?

Done properly, minimal risk. That being said, sponge-water-sponge is the best way to make certain your pipe are 100% clean every time.

Surprisingly, no. It took years of a buddy twisting my arm to use this technique before I ever mustered up the courage to give it a try. I done it hundreds of times now without fail. I think the key is to make absolutely certain that all boom sections are completely empty and just the deck pipe has concrete in it, otherwise I could see great chance of segregation. I should also mention that were are blessed with very forgiving materials in our area, not sure how inclined I would be to try this somewhere like Georgia or Texas where the materias are much more coarse/boney.

You've been pumping concrete long enough to know that brand loyalty runs about as deep as whichever machine we just so happen to be operating on any given day. 😂

It’s not for every job, but certain instances it can save a few minutes come time to pack up.
