Cleaning out the Greenhouse and Warming by the Fire in Appalachia

We finally cleaned out the greenhouse-it was a mess! I convinced Matt to help me clean out one flower bed too. Then we did one of our favorite things to do in the mountains of Appalachia-sit by the woodstove and warm.

I"m an only child too, but I'm middle aged and have my teenagers at home still.. but those days are numbered. I think often about the fact I may be alone one day depending on how long my husband and mother live. I think about it a lot. I think I'd go work a soup kitchen or go to a pot luck in my small town. Do you live in a rural area or are you in a city somewhere? I hope you find peace in this season

I'm one of them alone folks who really is uplifted by your videos. I miss my family, but this year we've all agreed to meet at my Dad's house on Christmas Eve for a meal together. My son and his family and my brother and his family will be there. My Dad turned 91 this year so time is precious and we all agreed we need to get together. Since my husband passed I live by myself, but I still have family, we just all live far apart. Anyway, I believe I am blessed and you can always look around and see someone that is worse off than you! I have a nice warm house, plenty to eat, clothes on my back and shoes on my feet! What more do you need! Love the Pressleys and the Graddicks!

My maternal great grandmother lived in the foothills of north Alabama. She delivered her 12 children in that old house, and I remember so well spending the night with her during Christmas break. The warmth and the heaviness of the many handmade quilts on top of me, and the unique feeling of the feather bed was so magical!! It'd get so cold you dare not move because just an inch over seemed like frozen ice! Lord help ya if you had to get up in the middle of the night to use a chamber pot. Grandma's house was so old, cold and crickety. All the rooms were closed off by a door, and just the living room was heated with her coal burning fireplace. I remember outside a little ways was a pile of coal and I thought all of my experiences was so cool because I was a city kid living in Birmingham. Grandma had running water and electricity, but no central air or heat. She had a well that was on the back porch which was concrete. I remember a hole on that back porch and some metal tube looking canister on pulleys to draw the water. She did have an outhouse, but later had a toilet room also built on the back porch that wasn't heated either. Y'all bring back so many warm memories when certain conversations come up on your channel and that's the biggest reason I love watching you guys ❣️ So thank you for sharing your stories, your family and your hometown ❣️ I too feel like an extension of Appalachia ❣️

I’m in central Alabama (Birmingham area)and remember visiting my great-grandparents many, many times at their farm on Sand Mountain outside Geraldine Alabama. While they did have an indoor bathroom, but we drank ONLY the most delicious cold well water, many times straight out of the bucket with a ladle they kept beside the kitchen sink. We use to have our family reunions at the old home place. She had 12 children, which my grandmother was the oldest. They all lived to a ripe old age so I knew all of her brothers and sisters as well. There was so much for us children to explore. I remember one time dangling my feet in a spring in the woods and about jumped out of my skin when a water moccasin slithered into the water, I was probably about 8. Talk about running as fast as I could through the trees and pasture as fast as possible hitting that red clay road at full speed. I loved sitting at the kitchen table watching and quietly listening to grandmother and great-grandmother talk and cook and there was real Hoosier cabinet where she kept her flour…etc. I am blessed to have great-grandmother’s dough bowl that great-papa carved for her when they first got married. She always had time for my sister and me as did my dear grandmother. Goodness, I could go on and on. I am so thankful to have known my great grandparents until my early teens.

This is such a wonderful video. When you’re talking about how to heat your house, it reminds me that my mom and daddy used all of those methods. They burned coal first in a fireplace then in a Warm Morning stove. Then they got an oil burning stove. When wood burning stoves were popular, they switched to one of those. Finally, when they got older, they used electric stack heaters. That old house, which was built by my papaw in 1927, has been through so many changes. I’m happy to say my oldest son is living there now.

Always enjoying visiting with you and Matt. Never know what special things y'all will talk about. 🙂. Your cocoa and grilled cheese sounded so good. Everytime I hear of homemade pickles I think of my mother in law making them every year. She would put big bowls of layered sliced cucumbers, onion and bell peppers in the refrigerator. She put rock salt on them. I think it would soften them a bit. In a few days she would take them out, rinse them and make "bread and butter" pickles. Kept them in jars in their extra refrigerator. She called them her Refrigerator Pickles because they started there. They were so good! Can't beat homemade pickles. Except the ones Aunt Bea made on the Andy Griffith show. 🙂🙂. God bless all the Presselys. 🎄❤️🎄

I'm one of them that has no family any more. Some died. Some went their own way. Some pushed me away. Don't much matter. I'm just alone and that's all there is to it. I didn't choose it, and wouldn't put anybody else through it, but here I am, trying to push through. To see that there are still families like yours living normal lives, getting together at Thanksgiving and Christmas, it's hard to even watch some times, but I do. I miss this sorely and wish my own life could have been a little more like yourn. Please keep doing these videos ... nor for the sorry like of me ... but for your own children and their children. They may not even realize the treasure of lore you're handing them now ... but they will forever thank you for it. They will. I'll peek in, but it don't mean nothing. Just to know it still happens harkens back.

My wife and I ran an old general store in a small town here in Pennsylvania. It had a coal furnace and I fired that for 13 years to warm the store. It was also our home at the time and had 3 stories. It took well over twenty tons of coal per winter to keep it going. The heat was awesome, and with coal, it would bank nicely till you got back to it in the morning.

Mother & Dad moved into their house in 1969 in WV. It had a coal bin in the basement. Over time, they removed it & added a room for hunting & camping stuff. That house cost $9,000 then. Thanks for the video of you both sitting together talking. I think we appreciate these moments more than we ever thought we would. It’s peaceful & we are go, go, all the time.

Love watching you two. You're the baomb and I've learned a new phrase: "Come unfed." Excellent. I lived off the grid for a few years with a large sheet-steel stove welded together by my boyfriend. We never lacked for warmth, for sure. We heated dishwater on it and kept a 5 gallon spouted jug nearby and thereby had "hot and cold running water"! I lived in Louisville, KY for over 20 years. I saw fancy homes with old coal cellars, a coal train (behind one of my apartments), and little coal pieces all throughout the soil all throughout town.

Told you before, first time I watched you - you cook & talk like family to me. Miss my Dad & Granny. Mom went in 2013. My Grandpa was a coal miner here in Cumberland Co., TN. We burned coal & wood. You 'appreciated' that old saw, Matt.

I love watching you and Matt having hot chocolate and chatting by your woodburner. You need to get a little Cafe style table, or a large stump to make it cozier and handy for these quick bites and chats. We also have an unfinished basement and use to have woodburner in it. When my husband built the house he ran low on money and part of our flooring is not plywood, it's particle board, and when winter time comes all the rooms with particle board creaks like a haunted house when you walk on them. But there is nothing like wood heat. We are getting ready to re install another woodburner as a backup to our outdoor woodburner which needs electricity to heat our home. With all the talk of our power grid possibly going down, you can always depend on the old ways to cook and heat. Thanks for sharing your wonderful way of life.

In 1993 we lived in a house with wood stove in the basement. There was a cut out with metal grate in the hallway which allowed the heat to rise to warm the four rooms upstairs. I have fond memories of that time in Metcalfe Co just a short distance from our home. I do wish we had that set up now. Enjoyed you and Matt. Thank you. ❤️

Seems like everyone has a drop off point of some type of another. Whenever I get around to cleaning up my "drop off" I always hear my mother saying "your going to wish you kept that." I've learned over the years that she was right. I could hang on to some little odd or end for years then finally I'll toss it and no sooner do I throw it out there I am needing just that odd or end and a hot flash rushes over me with the memory of me trashing it. So, now, when I clean up my drop off anything I think I'm going to throw out I put in a designated closet or spot in the barn. Then if I still don't go looking for it as time goes by it does go to the trash. Remembering my mum's words has saved me a ton of money over the years. You are so blessed to have a good man there by your side helping with all the fun but dirty work. I hope everyone reading this has a beautiful Christmas season.

its always such a joy to get to hang out with ya'll. them pickles and grilled cheese are making my mouth water. Shoot, I could nearly eat a jar of good dill pickles by myself!! I bet the grilled cheese and hot chocolate were the best ever cooked on that little stove! My mamaw and papaw were both school janitors and would take care of the coal furnace at my elementary school. Listening to Matt talk about the coal stories sure brings back childhood memories of having a coal stove. Okay Tipper you know we are all waiting to get to see them sleds!!
