Cleaning and Restoring a PlayStation 2 (Fat Model) - SCPH-30001

Keeping your retro gaming equipment clean is essential if you want it to last a long time. In this video I clean and restore a Sony Playstation 2. The original fat model, not the slim model. More specifically fat model SCPH-30001

Nice. I think it's important to note that the 10-screw model (what you have in this video - small mobo as well) is not super common, most are going to be the 8-screw models.

No problem! I don't mean to say that these are rare (I have one myself), just that the first few revisions of the fat model (up to SCPH-3000x V3) are this way. 3000x V4 and all fat models after are the more common 8-screw config with the clamshell style outer shell.

I've refurbished maybe about a dozen FAT PS2s and have my first 10 screw SCPH-30001 "U1 Legend" on the bench. Your video helped with the breakdown but, have you replaced the CMOS battery in one of these yet? Is there an easier way than pry and pray? At 23 years old, the battery is generally swapped for new automatically with any of the machines I've worked on.

you absolutely do not have to desolder the dc connectors to replace the cmos battery. when you get to where he's at around 13:00 just unscrew the screws on either side holding the motherboards to the frame and then gently pull straight up to separate them (they're connected by really long plugs, be *very careful* and don't use too much force). you'll find the cmos battery on the board still attached to the plastic frame. you just slide it out and change it like any other cmos.

I’m actually a little disappointed. I applaud your throneness on what you were doing to disassemble and reassemble this fat PS2. However, I was very much hoping your video would go more in depth with the CD drive. Underneath the CD Drive, there are two rails that the tray slides in and out on that needs lithium grease. I have watched other videos and they’re not as thorough as you are but I am guessing that you are not comfortable getting underneath there and I needed to know how to get the tray back in once you have pulled it out and lubricated all of those insides. Thanks for your work. I’ll have to keep searching.
