Cleaning a Pellet Grill - Yoder YS640s

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today, we are cleaning a pellet grill. In my case, it will be a Yoder YS640s, but this applies to almost every pellet grill on the market.
A pellet grill needs to be cleaned out more often than other types of grills. Sometimes, it worries people that too much maintenance is required as part of owning a pellet grill.
In this video, I will show you how easy cleaning is. In most cases, it takes less than 15 minutes. It requires some basic tools and products.

    Hi - Which vacuum do you use? I didn’t see it listed in the description.

    The one I was using is a high end FesTool, but that’s really overkill. I have it for my cars. I recently switched to the Home Depot bucket head shop vac. It attaches to a 5 gallon bucket. Cheap and gets the job done.

    Will the Sheila Shine clean a "soiled" grease shield or should another cleaner or cleaning method be used before using the Sheila Shine? My grease shield look like it has a fair amount of grease drippings and possibly discoloration from heat.

    No, use something like Bar Keeper’s Friend. It will take that right off. Go with the grain. Should be some in my Amazon store. 🍻

    CitrusSafe works well. Zep 505 is good if you need something heavier but try CitrusSafe first. I have links in my Amazon store in the description. 🍻

    I love your content and videos. I'm narrowing down options and am between Yoder and Pitts and Spitts. I'm worried about the 'rust issue' I keep reading about on the Yoder but think the wifi included on Yoder YS models is a huge plus. For Pitts and Spitts I love that it's stainless steel and all welded but wifi is extra. Do you have any thoughts on choosing one out of these two units? Is the Yoder rust issue overblown? How good is the wifi? Thanks for your efforts and thorough videos - subbed!

  • @RumandCook

    Tough call to be honest. I like the stainless myself. The rust issue is really just surface rust. My understanding is that it’s a quick hand sand and then just spray the black paint back on it. Mine will be 2 years old this summer and will be doing some videos on this process in the spring. I will say the wireless is very handy. It’s one of the reasons I added a pellet smoker back in the mix. I like being lazy from time to time and being able to adjust temp/monitor food temp remotely. The Fireboard app is basic, but rock solid and haven’t had any issues with it. They are both good units so I can’t really encourage you one way or the other. Sorry I can’t be of more help. Thanks for watching!

    @@RumandCook One more question for you - do you make use of the variable damper on your YS640s? Trying to decide between the 640 or the 480. Size wise, the 480 is plenty of grill for our use case but if the damper makes a big difference on the 640 I might make the step up. Any insights?

  • @RumandCook

    @RumandCook

    I almost never use the damper. It sits in the middle 99% of the time. Don’t waste your money on the 640 if you don’t need the space.

  • @RumandCook

    @RumandCook

    Thanks, darker video than I would have liked.. figuring out lights in my newer videos :) Not a huge amount. Pellet grills will fluctuate just by the nature of their design vs a lump charcoal cooker. This is because the pellet feeding speed is constantly being adjusted. That being said it's nothing that I have worried about or felt affected my cooks. If you start to see large swings, there is a test that Yoder support will ask you to run, and they may ask you to adjust the offset in the ACS a bit. That being said, I don't really feel a temporary swing of temp in any cooker has a huge effect on your outcome. Die hards will say it does, but they also used to say you couldn't cook a 14 pound brisket in under 6 hours and have it be delicious.

    @@RumandCook I am running a Bradley Smoker right now and experience huge fluctuations in the temp of the unit. I have I have a thermometer set up double probes to monitor the meat and the inside of the Bradley. I see 50 -75 degree swings in what the unit says its at and the probe says it is and make adjustments when needed. You are right...... the end result works out fine and no one is complaining when its on the plate. Thanks for your reply and keep up the good work

    @@johnminke4542 Thanks! Yeah 75 degrees is a big swing. I don't see that on low and slow, maybe 20-30. On high temp sessions I see swing, but usually I'm opening and closing the lid a lot + searing near the end.

    The zep 505 is safe to use on inside the grill? Or requires you to rinse after?

    I wouldn’t use Zep on the inside. I’d only use a scraper. If you need more power a Citrix based cleaner would be better. 🍻

    If you are talking about inside then you can spray some pan or canola oil inside. Don’t go too heavy and wait until you can run it at 350-400 for a couple hours. If you are taking externally, check my link below and pick up some ACF-50 (I have a couple rust prevent videos) and put a coating on it. That will stop the spread. I’d wait until it spreads more and then lightly sand one side, tape it and spray the whole side. It doesn’t blend in perfectly unless you do a complete section. Thanks for watching. 🍻

    @@RumandCook Thanks for the quick response. The rust is on the outer edges of the helical screw that pushes the pellets. I’ll definitely try the canola oil to control. I live in the northern part of New York a few hours from the Canadian border and the smoker will be out on my deck year round under the factory cover where I plan to smoke year round.

    The rod moves a damper plate in the bottom of the cooking chamber. All the way in makes it hotter on the left, all the way out makes it hotter on the right. 🍻
