Clean Meat: The Clean Energy of Food | Paul Shapiro | TEDxSouthLakeTahoe
Since the dawn of Homo sapiens, animals have satiated our species’ desire for meat. But with our growing population and global demand for animal products increasing, raising such huge numbers of animals for food poses serious challenges. But, what if we could have our meat and eat it too? Enter clean meat-real meat, grown without animals-which has now moved from science fiction to science fact. Paul Shapiro serves as the vice president of policy for The Humane Society of the United States, the world’s largest animal protection organization. In 1995, Shapiro founded Compassion Over Killing as a high school club, building it into a national organization over the next decade. An inductee into the Animal Rights Hall of Fame, Shapiro has published dozens of articles about animal welfare in publications ranging from daily newspapers to academic journals. He’s also the author of a forthcoming book on the clean meat movement (Simon & Schuster’s Gallery Books). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Amazing talk - so inspiring!
Love what Paul Shapiro has been doing/is doing in the future of food space! Great talk
This is such a great talk by one of the world's foremost experts on the subject!
What a great talk! Loved the smart phrasing, the reasoning, great examples and great arguments. Thanks for a wonderful talk on a fascinating subject!!
Highly important and eloquent talk! Thanks so much, Paul!
I would eat clean meat
Talks about meat with FACTS and LOGIC
Amazing talk!
Brilliant arguments. Nobel Prize worthy in my eyes. I'm in Alaska, and well, I'd like to help California not have to worry so much about droughts. But I don't know what to do, I work on cars. This guy is hitting every nail on it's head perfectly. I'd totally try some clean meat, if droughts go away for people who are suffering. I'll eat anything meant to be healthy, mail it to me and I'll critique it fairly. We are dealing with a very antiquated system that makes a lot of animals have no normal life just so we can eat them. I know it, I still buy it, it's cheap, I still feel bad about it. But my justification is, well atleast I ate it, and it sustained me so sorry, and thank you.
I’d imagine with increased experience we can even figure out how to engineer the taste. So not only will we be able to get this to taste good, I believe we can even recreate the taste differences we see with stuff like all grass fed beef and so on. I’m not one to go vegan but I’d eat clean meat at the drop of a hat.
Really enjoyed this powerful talk, so glad this topic is getting out in the world!
I am optimistic on this future!
Very hopeful message for the future of food!

A great talk, thank you :)
I can't wait for clean grown meat to start coming to stores. I just hope that it actually tastes as good as I've heard because if it sucks it'll be dead on arrival.
If the energy for the production comes from a clean and sustainable source, then yes, I'm totally in.
How do the resource consumption and emissions compare to factory farmed meat and plant based meats?
I like this talk as a talk about the principles behind clean meat but I was hoping to see more details on how the clean meat is created
*The future food* will be clean, tasty and it will be grown in labs or bio-reactors. He is right, the industrial farming of animals is about to be disrupted by a more efficient process for meat production. Meat stocks will go down, if they do not invest into lab-meat.

Wow!
I don't know if his stats are accurate, but a system that significantly reduces the suffering and slaughtering of animals is a system I can easily support. I say reduce rather than eliminate because some species of animals require meat in their diets, so complete elimination of animal suffering (in the wild) and slaughter (for pet food as well) is unfortunately not realistic.

I hope this really is the future of meat I like meat,but I feel guilty about it seeing how places treat animals. So I usually try to eat meats from the Local Butcher shop (Which is from Genuine Farms,not "farms" Or meat alternatives

No matter where your meat came from it is still an animal who had a knife pulled across his/her throat. Please do not support murder. Eat plant based alternatives, they taste great and no one has to die for it. 💚🌱

This is a great alternative to the devastating industry that is animal agriculture. However, over-consumption of meat and dairy products is the leading cause of death in western society. "Eat Less Meat" is a slogan for our health as well as the planet and the animals we share it with.

How does the meat get rid of toxins like an animal would?
@samjeffries1886
5 жыл бұрын
The clean meat doesn't come with toxins because it comes straight from the cells of the animal.
Franken food yummm. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Got to save the planet though right.

My main question is how this will affect farmers.
@arash8664
5 жыл бұрын
By farmers u mean farmers being linked with a big meat industry such as McDonalds who use gmo and they have no choice because they have certain supply rate they have to meet or r u referring to local farmers who are at most 10% farmers won contribute to the meat production. Don't forget machines are and will always be more efficient than any human in the world so farming isn't that big of a issue compared to other problems such as the futures of your children.

I’m very skeptical about this issue humans aren’t carnivores, we’re plant eaters. Heart decease is the number one killer more than cancer. What causes heart decease eating meat especially red meat, however all meats contribute. My feelings are that this kind of meat is chemically enhanced pretty much like gmo’s in plants which is linked to cancer the two killer. I’m vegan now for almost a year and I’ve slimmed down to a normal weight no more body aches and pains. I wasn’t sure I could do it however I educated myself by reading and asking questions to other vegans and vegetarians.

John Rang You are absolutely correct. We are herbivores. I've been vegan for 10 years. I don't miss meat at all. We should be eating a plant-based diet. Also, the lab meat companies are not 100% transparent. They will always harvest cells from animals, perpetuating the domestication/exploitation of animals. Also, the energy inputs for creating lab meat are not necessarily sustainable, although better than raising livestock. But, yes, you are right about the diseases inherent in eating animals and animal secretions. Totally toxic, whether from a lab or farm. So glad that you are vegan!

Actually humans are omnivores not herbivores or carnivorous. Not making an argument for or against eating meat, just a fact correction.
@GiovanniPrince

OMNIVORES, not carnivores, not herbivores. We as a species were meant to eat both meat and plants.
Star Trek Voyager, here we come. probably better with no GMOs.
Lost me when he started to use green water in his analysis. Most water in water footprints is green water. What's green water? It's rain fall. This rain falls regardless of the product. In the case of chicken, it's primarily the amount of water to grow the feed that chicken eat. If chicken were fed farmed insects, the number would be irrelevant. Blue water is what's important, and bioreactors circulating nutrients and removing waste will require more blue water than all forms of meats.
Ever hear of Soylent green?
Egg whites include a living creature.

CLEAN MEATS are for CARNIST and great yet we still need MORE VEGANS than just CARNIST.
This is a good alternative for humans to move away from animal-based meat but I wonder if it is ethical and moral yet. To me a cell is alive and if it is alive we shouldn't be exploiting it because we're human beings. Also the cell belongs to the animals that we take the cell from, not to us, and without their consent or ability to give consent if we take it to make food without their permission, that is considered as stealing which is unethical and immoral. If we could just get rid of our need for food overall or find an alternative to food or nutrients that do not come from anything that is alive, that would be best IMO. Nevertheless, I'm still happy that we get this far. I eat meat and to me the slaughterhouse is too cruel and inhumane right now. Hope it will be gone forever asap.
