I'm queer, disabled, & learning that I'm probably neurodivergent as hell. I've had some improvement in my health recently, but I've been finding it really difficult to start or finish anything big or small. I just heard of this body doubling thing & I got so much done just listening along to this video while I worked. Thank you!!!

I have watched this video like 5 times at different times to clean my kitchen. I really don’t like the space & can’t think of how to organise it and it all piles up in there really easy. I love all your positive insights during this video. I don’t have an adhd diagnosis or any support or any treatment or help with cleaning. This video helps a lot. Just to reframe my own self-beliefs that were told to me and aren’t even mine! Thanks for showing me how to be kind to myself, because a lot of other people throughout my life haven’t been so kind and I have been internalising it all this time.

ESSAY INCOMING This video with the cleaning and chat was so nice, feels good to get to know someone I have a lot in common with. I was the same as a child, floor was covered and I was never on top of my mess even though my mother has OCD and constantly tried to get me to clean and tidy. It's anxiety and ADHD for sure. I recently finally got a surge of motivation to clean my depression mess, and body doubling videos like this are so helpful, it feels like someone is coaching me and watching. Watching random youtube videos or a show doesn't work for me though, it just distracts me. Music/audiobooks are OK. I knew I wasn't going to have an organised space if I kept all the things I own and it wasnt going to help with my stress and depression long term either. So I chucked all the rubbish and a good 1/3rd of my belongings into black bags, being as savage as possible with it, starting in one area then moving to the next. I didnt want to stress about what I'll do with the stuff, so I just piled it all up in the hallway to decide what to do with later. CAN'T RECOMMEND ENOUGH by the way, having less stuff to organise and put away has actually left me with SPACE in my closet, no overflowing drawers or random piles of objects etc. It feels amazing. Then I bought a bunch of organising things- baskets, some boxes, drawer dividers etc and one of those drawer towers for my art stuff to just have it all in one place seperate from everything else so it's acessable and won't end up everywhere. I kinda do hoard art supplies but having only the 1 place they're allowed to go will hopefully force me to cut back. I also semi hoard prepper stuff too like you because I get so anxious, I have fantasies about like having a basement full of canned food and survival stuff but I think I can talk myself out of it. I am trying out the same thing of keeping it limited- everything has to fit in 1 basket. So yeah I'm maybe a little crazy having potassium iodide and water filters and a camping stove and a solar + hand powered radio etc, but just knowing it's there and looking through it sometimes is very reassuring to me. I dont think there is anything wrong with following government recommendations about having a few emergency use items & bottled water either. If you need them, you'll be glad you had them, the important thing is that it doesn't take over your life. Maybe you could try keeping just 1 dedicated backpack in your closet containing everything you would need, so you don't need to panic next time there is a weather emergency and you wont make more mess for yourself pulling things out etc. Anyway, then I did the Marie Kondo thing and dumped everything I wanted to keep onto my bed category by category, and then organised them into piles/containers and decided where they would go. I wish I had more space so I couldve totally emptied my closet etc before I started, but I pretty much managed to clear space to put things as I went along. Anyway, it took over a week start to finish, but now everything is so organised and it feels so good. I even bought a couple of wastepaper bins for my room like a Real Human and now rubbish goes in there instead of on the floor or on my desk. My desk is now purely my PC setup (laptop with plug-in mouse, keyboard etc), and a jar of pens & pencils, and the side pocket on the desk has my notebooks and current paperwork. And a vase of cute fake flowers on it. My closet 1 just has coats, sweaters and bags hanging, 2 large boxes of fabric stash & a basket of my sewing supplies on the bottom, and bathroom stuff on the shelf above the clothes. Closet 2 has dresses and jeans and belts hanging, a basket of seasonal items (scarves hats etc) on the bottom, all my hair stuff in a big basket on one shelf, games in another basket on a different shelf, and my books on another shelf. I have 2 empty shelves!??! The dresser has my clothes, each drawer is a different category and I MARIE KONDO FOLDED everything. The remaining drawers have 1 with electronics, 1 with makeup & jewelry and 1 with paperwork. On top of the dresser is the TV, the router and some framed photos. My bedside drawer has my meds, sleeping mask & cap, cooling pads for my laptop, my Switch, and a lavender lotion thing from Lush. Then on top is my lamp, a fan and a little fabric box with my vape stuff. I have a laundry basket for lights and 1 for darks, and a large basket thing with towels and bedding in. I do have a shoebox of sentimental items but it's at my mother's house. Ok so I described all that stuff because that's EVERYTHING I own now, and it's all in my room with room to spare. No more random craft things I'll probably never use, or used pieces of paper, packaging I kept because it looks nice, old calendars, stuffed toys I havent spent time with for years, hairbands and odd socks everywhere, gifts I don't like but feel bad about chucking, cables for electronics I don't own or use anymore, decorative pieces I don't have a place I want to put them, ornaments I kept because I just had them for so long, old magazines, etc etc etc. Just cannot stress enough how good I've felt since I did this big clean out. It's WAY easier to keep things tidy even for my brain, everything has a place it goes and I know about every single item in my room. It looks so empty and spacious and calm. I was worried that all the space would just feel intimidating and make me feel more anxious about keeping it that way. But it's fine, I don't try to keep it perfect and I leave it a few days at a time before I tidy up because that's just who I am, I dont have the mental energy to get it all looking nice at the end of every day. It's fantastic because now I'm actually noticing when things feel messy around me, so the actual motivation to clean up gets triggered more often, which is crazy, and there is no backlash of being scared of the amount I need to do. And then because the amount I need to do is so much smaller than it always was before, the motivation actually LASTS LONG ENOUGH for me to get it done and I get all that juicy dopamine instead of getting distracted or bored part way through and then feeling bad about myself. I actually LOOK FORWARD to cleaning up now so I can get the satisfaction of it looking nice again, which is the closest thing to having a non ADHD brain that I've ever experienced. I hope so much that it lasts. I think something about doing this huge declutter and knowing everything which is in here and everything having a place and purpose has soothed my general anxiety way more than I ever expected. No more niggling feelings of guilt about hoarding stuff or places in my room that are so bad I dont want to look, or feeling bad that I'm a messy person, because now I can be messy AND enjoy having a tidy space. Totally crazy. Having less stuff was definitely the key. My room was only my private space and nobody was judging it but me, but it just makes me feel like I can be a human in other parts of my life too now.

Hey, I want to say thank you for making this video. I had wanted to clean my home 'perfectly' before new year, but that goal gave me so much anxiety. I tried watching this video n clean before but I failed bc I was overwhelmed. In the end I didn't meet that goal. So today, on new year day I said screw it, I will just clean what I can! I actually cleaned for 50 minutes straight with this video in the background. I didn't really 'watch' it, but listening to your voice and glancing over the screen every few minutes make me feel like I am not alone. I like your gentle reminder that it is okay to clean just a little bit, it is okay to not be perfect. Truly, thank you so much!

Body doubling videos really help me! 💓 It also helps to try not to assign a moral value to your situation. Idk if I can explain this in a comment but for example, "clothes on the floor" and "clothes on a hanger" are both just "clothes on a place", but we feel so much worse about one than the other and that makes confronting the work even harder emotionally

Not officially autistic but I am officially adhd and highly suspect to be leaning towards autistic on the spectrum that is neurodivergence. I think the doomsday thing at least for me is tied to how vivid my imagination is and how sequentially I can think. When faced with an emergency of any size, my brain immediately runs all possible scenarios. So in the case of a storm, I am immediately aware of what would happen if it was worst case. That outcome is usually accurate. Like if we got a flood it would take X amount to flood the house or the wind would knock that tree if it blew hard enough and given the wind direction it would probably clip the house etc. It’s not “oh a tree might fall” it’s “THAT tree might fall if the wind blows to the north and take out this much of the house”. I can’t in good faith or sanity ignore those predictions. It’s not going to kill anyone to move the things important to me away from the harm that I can see coming. I couldn’t live with myself if the worst case happens and I knew. I don’t think neurotypical people run the scenarios like that or at least not to that level of specificity.
