This is the kind of piece that makes me want to say we don't have nearly enough chromatism in the "usual", better known repertoire. Monteverdi is such fun. :)
For another wonderful example of bitter sweet and full of madrigalesque cromatism and counterpoint, please hear "Così sol d,'una chiara fonte viva", the secod part of the wonderful "Or, che'l ciel et la terra". ¡Divino Claudio!

This is so harmonically rich and has a really dark medieval feeling.
great find! also "anco lasciare" in the title means those instruments may be left out (anco is obsolete Italian for anche).
