Playing Cleopatra, Leigh's showing more "hauntedness" in her beauty and her transformation from a very young girl to an increasing sensuous (and murderous) siren. She's superb in the scene of her deceitful defense of her order to have Pothinus killed. What a performance!

This is one of the greatest films ever made, and is far superior to the original play.George Bernard Shaw's screenplay is magnificent, and Vivien Leigh and Claude Rains are excellent in the respective roles.Vivien Leigh is lovely and enchanting in her role as Cleopatra, and should have been nominated, and won, an Oscar for Best Actress. The scene where Cleopatra realizes that the man she met at the Sphinx is really Caesar is one of the most memorable moments in Cinema History.

Beautiful 1945 Technicolour and great British cast. Setting was a bit like a stage play in terms of dialogue, but I think the relationship between the flirtatious Vivian Leigh still at the height of her beauty and the stately velvet voiced Claude Rains, they managed to make the wordiness enjoyable. Nice costumes and props but the backgrounds were like painted flats; I suppose that is to be expected with the high lighting requirements of technicolour film. Thanks for posting!

A superbly enjoyable film, with Leigh’s acting the equal of her beauty. One of the few films featuring Claude Rains in the title role, but his acting is exceedingly impressive. There are many other actors here, each of which bring nuggets of wonder to their role. The scene is set from the start, when Leo Genn, Stanley Holloway and Alan Wheatley exhibit high diction and authority. But there are many others, such as Michael Rennie, Stuart Granger, Francis Sullivan, Ernest Thesiger, Felix Aylmer, John Laurie, Flora Robson (superb) Kathleen Harrison and Cecil Parker. The scenes often involve hundreds of extras and are generally well constructed. The script is humorous in parts which sits well with the production. In summary, a cinematic gem and underrated film.

The actors (and visual richness) make this play-on-film quite enjoyable, with that easy, more contemporary (circa '45) sense of delivery and pacing, ie without the usual overinflated and often pompous style of line delivery and stance. Very amusing in Shaw's satirical musings. And one could certainly go on about Leigh's beauty and talent, as well as Rains' expected lively, nuanced performance. Good spirited cast, all around (though that may be stating the obvious.) Quirky and fun long-overlooked (I think) historical retelling.

The opening speech if Cesaer to the Sphinx in the desert night was brilliant in explaining the Roman and Egyptian philosophies if the times then, as well as futuristic in explaining what we have since uncovered about the building of those civilizations and the various theories that did not exist at the time this version of the movie was made in 1947!! It was totally awesome!!! I never noticed it before, but, as I am much older and have been exposed to the newer theories on the ancient wonders like the Sphinx n the Nile River and the question of their inceptions!!! This presentation was a showcase for Caesar and Claude Rains. I sincerely doubt Cleopatra ever acted like a (forgive me) brainless bimbo. Cleopatra spoke as many as a dozen languages fluently, was schooled in math, astronomy, geography, philosophy, oratory and diplomacy. She was far from being just some sex kitten. For this reason, I prefer the Taylor portrayal of this influential queen.

More of a comedic farce than any kind of historical treatment. I found Leigh's Cleopatra childish and silly, bearing little to no resemblance to the historical accounts of the Queen. As the victors, the Romans talked quite a bit of smack about Her Maj that has survived to this day: she was in reality quite a woman, a capable and shrewd ruler, literate, multi-lingual, and reputedly the first in the Ptolemaic line in many generations who even bothered to learn the Egyptian language! The costumes and sets are nice, though, and I very much like that the odd person may become irreversibly bitten by the history bug.

I must confess I'm rather puzzled by the comments on this film! First of all, it's Bernard Shaw, he wrote SATIRICAL plays. That means that this is NOT about Ancient Egypt, or Rome. Or even necessarily Cleopatra. It had more to do with political and economic issues in England at the time of its writing. Likely to do with the British Empire and the state of the government and royalty. Shaw was, after all, a socialist. Second, I'm quite shocked to read what everyone's saying about the acting. These were the greatest British actors of their day! Many of them were Royal Shakespeare. Yes, the style of acting has changed, thanks to Hollywood. But frankly, I prefer this more classical style to the expletive littered, overwrought, and personality based American method of "building" a character (if you can call it that). Of course, there's no accounting for taste. I'm sure sooner or later Hollywood will put out another, "historically accurate" Cleopatra film, replete with an "inclusive" cast and script that, of course, reflects EXACTLY what people, motives, and ideas were like at the time of Caesar and Rome. Because Hollywood is always making art now, isn't it?

I had seen bits and pieces of this on TV when I was growing up. How nice to see it from beginning to end with its wonderful humor and inimitable cast: my two favorites, Leigh and Rains (and some may recognize Ernest Thesiger, or Dr. Praetorius, of "The Bride of Frankenstein"). It is puzzling when some viewers don't recognize wit and satire set against history.

This movie is good. It made me laugh and had lots of great moments and great acting. Screw modern acting style, this movie was interesting and went fast. It entertained me. It is art. Hollywood can make documentaries for all I care. Only Hollywood and SJWs can turn a British play 150 years old into something shallow.

I saw the movie because it had Claude rains and vivien Leigh playing the lead.GBS came as a wonderful surprise, afterwards

I truly loved both Vivien Leigh and Elizabeth Taylor's costumes and think both were extremely grand, but I think the colour quality of the film in 1947 when Leigh's costumes were filmed was not as poignant as the colour quality if the film in the early 1960's, when Taylor's costumes were filmed. If you ever notice a movie from the 1940's, 1950's, 1960's the colour quality and the look of the atmosphere is different from the 1970's n 1980's, and you can always date a 1970's film by the feel of the colour quality in the atmosphere of the picture or film itself. I hope you can understand what I am trying to describe!!! Therefore, the costumes filmed in different colour quality would be just as magnificent as the ones filmed in Taylor's time period making all the costumes as well as both the wearers fantastic!!!

THUMBS DOWN . While i do love the players as magnificent members of theater aristocracy the script is so far from reality its broad comedy. The ads every five mins made a one hour film two and a half. Had to stay to see Leigh and Rains but will quickly advise not to bother.

I like these old epics. Leigh and Rains were both good actors. But I forgot this one was made in 1945. I was done as soon as she started beating the black slave, who was portrayed as ignorant and cowardly. Some things, like this movie, are better left in the past.

I agree but black people getting roles at all was rare especially in a major film. I think he was there for comic relief and did his job well. But the whipping scene was cringe worthy.

@@suziecreamcheese211 True, Blacks getting any role was rare back then. As far as comedic relief, what's funny to one man is another man's centuries-long insult. Consider how the Hebrew slaves played by white actors in The Ten Commandments were largely portrayed as noble or heroic. At the very least, they were acknowledged as victims. Besides, did the slave in this picture have to be black? Or was rhat just what felt comfortable to the white American public at the time? Still, there has been great progress since this movie was made. From being a cowardly, adle-brained slave back then to being the Superhero King of Wakanda! :)

Especially enjoyed watching actors well known from other films like Thesiger, Rennie, Sullivan, Genn, Robson. The boy who played Ptolemy went on to direct "The Lion in Winter" (Anthony Harvey). My fave thing is Claude Rains in his wedgies to make him a bit taller. Thanks for the memories.

Least the cleo patra with Elisabeth Taylor was more historically accurate. But still dramatised in different ways. 🤔why let the truth get in the way of a good story, I guess!🤔
