Very sad, considering we now have a cure for tuberculosis and medication for bipolar disorder. A manic episode can be so bad that it turns into a psychotic break. A depressive phase can be completely debilitating. She suffered the lowest of the low and the highest of the high, in her short life.

My young wife was the most vibrant person, just fun to be around. We came home from shopping one day and we were putting groceries away when she screamed. I turned around to see her frantic. "What is it", I asked. "A rat!" she said. I looked where she was pointing, there was nothing there. When I looked back at her she shouted, "Can't you see it?" and made a gesture to show me how big it was. It was the size of a basset hound to her. I stepped forward and hugged her, telling her it was okay, she was safe. She was shaking so hard her body was convulsing. In a few moments her eyes cleared and she laughed nervously. Within five years the beautiful, vibrant, fun person I married was replaced with a paranoid, vengeful, unfaithful wretched person. I miss that time before we lost her to mental illness.

Fortunately, she married a fine man early in her life, had three sons and led a quiet life filled with a loving family life, good friends and stability. She was incredibly talented, ill, and tormented. Her life was indeed tragic. However, her beauty and talent was extraordinary. She earned 2 Oscars and did not make many films. Her stage career was legendary. For me, the fact that stands out is that she arguably delivered the single best motion picture performance by any actor/actress in almost 4 hour movie where she is in almost every scene. I cannot think of any performer that could have pulled such an incredible achievement. I try to consider her contribution to movies and that makes her one of favorite movie actress. Her deeply flawed and tormented personal life with mental illness is to be considered truly tragic for her and those people in her life.

My Mom, while alive, suffered from bipolar. When she was in the up swing, she would go on a cleaning jag. But when she hit the down swing, she would say and do things, that she wouldn't remember. My Mom hated my brother's first ex-wife, but when she had her down swing, she told my brother that she felt sorry for his first wife, and said something like, "I can see why she left you." For the record, his first wife left him, because she was cheating on him with his then best friend, whom she would go on to marry. When I spoke to my Mom after she went back to normal, she said she didn't remember anything, then called my brother to apologize.

Actually when Vivien first saw Olivier on stage he was not a rising star he was already probably England’s most famous and successful actor. I don’t think all the critics savaged Vivien’s performance but Kenneth Tynan was famously and apparently unjustly scathing of Vivien for a reason no one has ever seemed to understand. She certainly suffered greatly due to her bipolar disorder and her films were all too few but I don’t think anyone could have played Scarlett better than she did, she saw so much of herself in Margaret Mitchell’s character. I also don’t think anyone could have understood the character of Blanche Dubois as well as Vivien, she had lived those experiences. She was unique in cinema and I can’t think of another star that was anything like her.

Even now in our times…Even in Viviens day I read there were no proper moodswings……..She was perfect Scarlett O Hara! Made that movie everything I’m sure it took everything out of her she out plus they gave out uppers back then …making her bipolar worse. Dear Lady i understood the blackouts that’s after a psychotic- severe manic attack…… What you say aren’t dissing Vivien. It’s simply part of the illness un medicated…….meaning the many affairs and cheating ) listen that was me as well, without therapy and meds I went thru ECT sadly lost yrs of my memory, just came back.though that was I’d get physically violent and verbally physically w bfs and Drs in hospitals in early days bc I was throwing cups of water one day so manic threw though I’m a small woman but tall) threw a big Bible at a crappy female Dr after a 10 min argument! That was years years ago maybe I was 40 yrs old? Now I’m hospital free ex for any physical things no psychiatric issues bc I’m blessed with great Drs . I’m so proud of Vivien . All you accomplished my luv. Another tortured soul one to be The loss of you. Effected me. Ah my Scarlett!🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃

Another beautiful and talented actor who had to hide her identity, and pass as lily white. And what was wrong with the name "Hartley?" She was a STAR. No reason to change a thing.

Her life had so many facets to it. I read recently that she did covert work for the allies during WWII, transporting documents. Leslie Howard, also in GWTW, supposedly did covert work himself for Churchill. His plane was shot down and was never found. Heroes, both of them, taking risks they didn't need to take given their fame and status would have kept them safe.

So wait she’s the one with bipolar disorder and he’s the one grabbing her Oscar that she fully earned and claiming he wanted to hit her with it?!?! a lot of attention is brought to her bipolar disorder, which certainly was a thing but many contemporary accounts of the two of them stay that he was extremely cold and awful to her. I feel that Professional jealousy was always at the core of it

You failed to mention the myriad affairs Olivier had. In fact, I read that he was the one who started this hamster wheel they had. You failed to mention that so many of their close friends talked about how abusive he was to her. I don’t feel like you presented a balanced picture of their relationship, and what may have exacerbated her mental illness/state of mind. In fact toward the end, you mentioned that she “beat him with a wet towel,” which “forced him to throw her across the room,” as if it’s a foregone conclusion that throwing a woman who was known to have been around 100 pounds, and perhaps suffering from mental illness, across the room is an acceptable response.

David Niven was tasked with caring for Vivien after her breakdown on the set in “Elephant Walk.” He wrote about it 20 years later in his memoir “Bring on the Empty Horses.” Even with him disguising names and some of the circumstances, it is quite hard to read. Look on KZread for a kinescope of her one TV acting gig, as Sabina in “The Skin of Our Teeth.” Only the first two acts, alas, but it’s a completely unexpected performance.

As sad as mental illness is, and believe me, I know how incredibly difficult it was, to navigate psych hospitals, courts, adult day treatment, doctors, etc., still, that does not excuse us from morality. People who allow emotions to make choices in their lives, set up heartaches that will destroy them, and the people they love. Always keep a check on your emotions.

It was common for British people and Armenians in India to marry one another. There are many half-Armenian/half-British (or Scottish or Irish) mixes from India because they were both Christian communities living there. Though the Brits had colonized India, Armenians have been there since the 1600s - living as a diaspora.

@@leahartlee29 check out more than Wikipedia. Vivien Leigh was primarily English with some Irish and Armenian. She was born in India when it was part of the British Empire. Google Merle Oberon who really was part Indian. Her story is very sad as she had to hide her ethnicity so that she told people her mother was her maid. Merle's looks are very exotic while Vivien's are classically Anglo-Irish

I know not everyone would agree, but from a Christian perspective, it seems to me there was a demonic influence in her life. Her husband's choice of words describing her pursuing the role of Scarlet with "demonic determination" 5:57 is interesting. Her agent's description 9:13 also reminds me of this. I say that in the hopes that someone who's going through something similar may consider asking for prayer. There is power in the name of Jesus against demonic forces (Mark 9:17-29; Luke 9:40-44).

Olivier was not as loyal to Leigh as this video would indicate. He had homosexual affairs during his marriage with Leigh; affairs which Joan Plowright supposedly said she would not tolerate if she were to marry him. She did; so perhaps he was more loyal to her. This is not a judgment on Olivier's sex life. But betrayal is betrayal. Seems Leigh had much to deal with and she already had a fragile psychology. The way she reacted to the attack scene with Lee Marvin makes me wonder if she had ever been brutalized in life. I believe she was and that would have greatly contributed to her mental issues. She had an almost other-worldly beauty. It came with a price.
