Classroom Set Up for Back to School

Note: This video audience is set for 18+ ONLY and not intended for children, but instead as an instructional resource for early childhood educators.
Now that we have all the furniture back in the classroom, we are ready to decide where each center will go!

Looks great! I love the shelving units pulled away from the walls, helping to create divided spaces. My train table is used for everything, except a train, for my age group. 😊 It's the most used piece of furniture I have. The children love to stand at it to play with themed toys. I love the new location for your block area. I predict you're going to end up pulling your train table to the outside middle of your block area, sacrificing a tad bit outside edge of your Circle Time area. (tehe) You may be able to detach your easel into two parts and have them mounted flat onto the wall. I've seen people wallpaper an area on a wall surrounding a mounted easel with clear or colored contact paper to protect the wall. I don't know if your walls would allow contact paper to adhere to it, though. I think having a sink next to your new science table will be handy for you, if it's a working sink. This is the first time I've seen a classroom with two sinks. The new book nook is cozy. If it ends up being too cramped, you might could move it to the opposite side of the main door and create a space at the edge of your Circle Time large wall. The couch and/or chair could be used for extra seating at Circle Time, as long as the "special seating" didn't cause hard feelings to those few children who got to sit on furniture, instead of the floor. IDK? Arranging the furniture is probably one of the hardest parts of setting up a classroom. We tend to do a lot of second guessing ourselves, generally speaking. Good luck with your new group of children and your coming school year. You are very inspiring. You are one of a very few of my "go-to" resources I check first thing, when I'm doing my planning.

Thank you for all of the suggestions, Tonya! I am quite sure we will be making some adjustments once the children are in the classroom. I will save your ideas for that time when we are scratching our heads wondering if there is something else we can try.

Great job, it looks amazing. I love how dedicated your team of teachers are to find the configuration for your classroom. I noticed your book shelf is in a different are than your reading area. Do you just add a basket of books for that quiet area?

It usually is in the reading area but it is a tight fit with this new layout. Much of our book reading takes place before each of our circle times, so we are going to see how it works there. We will put baskets of books in the reading area and some can also fit in those cubes next to the couch and chair. We actually have books all over the classroom. 🙂

Love it! Did you use a circle time wall with calendar, numbers, colors, shapes and the weather. I see most teachers have them in there class room.

Thank you, Yvette! I don’t do calendar or weather with our 2s and 3s but we do have the alphabet and numbers on our wall. As for shapes and colors, we expose the children to them through hands-on activities and books throughout the classroom. I’ve found this much more affective than posters. We share our classroom with an older group (I don’t teach it), so they will have a bit more on the wall as the year progresses. But my class doesn’t use them.

We teach them by modeling what we want to see. We spend a great deal of time going over everything those first few weeks. This is why I keep things simple at first - I know everything will take more time than usual. I am carefully observing the children and redirecting when needed, showing them positive choices - we roll cars on the floor, not throw them; we use gentle touches with our friends, not hitting or pushing. I talk a lot about this in my back to school videos and will discuss this more in an upcoming video.

Do you let the children take the Family pictures down to look at them closer or do they have to keep them clipped up there all the time? I love that idea of a family wall

They can take them down. I laminate them for this reason, as some children find great comfort carrying their family photos around the classroom. They also love to remove them to show their friends. They still get pretty bent up by the last month of school, but they survive the year!
