Segment A:
Beginning of STEM - With 57 years of teaching in the same district, Jane Silverstein looks back at a rich and rewarding career. Jane was the first person to coin STEM back in the 90s, and today the name and concept have exploded in the public schools. She teaches advanced placement chemistry at John F Kennedy (School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) where more than half of her graduates go on to receive advanced degrees in law, medicine and science.
Segment B:
Teen Arts Festival - A big honor for any artistically talented teen in New Jersey is to be invited to the New Jersey State Teen Arts Festival. The event, held at the Ocean County College in Toms River, features workshops, showcases, performances and a college fair. The arts featured include literary, performing and visual.
Segment C:
Rolling Thunder - Somerville High School students in Somerville, NJ honor Rolling Thunder, a group that advocates for POW/MIA and veterans' rights. The vets explain to the students what it’s like to be drafted, how they felt coming back from combat, and the sacrifices they made for their country. The school created a permanent display to honor Robert Sheridan, the only POW from Somerset County who was killed in action.
Segment D:
Civil Rights Cold Case - Hightstown High School students are learning first-hand how laws are made through a memorable civil rights lesson. The AP Government and Politics class is in its third year lobbying for a federal law called the Civil Rights Cold Case Records Collection Act. In an attempt to solve old civil rights cases, the students are advocating for the release of documents related to civil rights cold cases.
