Classical Musicians React: Suga 'First Love'

Ойын-сауық

For the 54th reaction video of season 2 of this series, classical music majors react to Suga's 'First Love' lyric video.
Thanks to Twitter ARMY's and RM's VAPP video (www.vlive.tv/video/15694/BTS-L...) reflecting back on the WINGS album, I was able to write up and read short intros to each solo song before the reactors watched the videos. For our solo song marathon, I encouraged the reactors to pay 50% attention to the music and 50% to lyrics...except for Suga's solo where I asked them to pay most attention to his lyrics.
You can watch Umu's in-depth and super emo review of First Love here: • Suga 'First Love' Song...
Watch ashleygold25's First Love lyric video here: • BTS Suga - 'First Love...
She also kindly gave me permission to use her thumbnails too!

People have been saying that they always miss the text when I name the new people in the video, so i'll just name em here:

lady sitting next to Peyton: Charlotte, oboist

*DISCLAIMER: I do not own any of the songs or videos being reacted to in this video. All credits to the companies that own them.
Also, none of us are PROFESSIONAL musicians. So if you come here for a strict breakdown/analysis of the music, you won’t be getting that. This is strictly my conservatory musician friends taking time in their schedule to watch kpop for fun, and throw in any musical comments that come into their mind! Also please do not complain about any "boring" reactions...some of the musicians have blank faces since they are concentrating so deeply on analyzing the music. On top of that, if you think that they aren't commenting enough on the music, it's because /nothing/ is happening IN the music to comment on. It may be a great song/bop/huge hit that they're listening to, but that does not mean there are actual complicated musical things happening that they'd be able to talk about.

The line where he says he clutched his shoulder and couldn't do this anymore was when he got hit by a car as he was still a delivery boy while he was a trainee at BigHit but didn't tell the company out of fear they would cut him off. He stopped B-boying after the incident. With all the pressure of debuting he felt that injury truly made it impossible when he only had a slim chance before, in that time of his life he felt so overwhelmed he was thinking of ending it all, but music prevented him from doing that. His parents were also against him setting out to attempt to become a big artist so he tried to step away from music but he clearly says in the song how he couldn't. music honestly means the world to him, it sounds like an exhaggeration but it isn't. our king has had a hard life and music is the reason why he's still here.

"I never expected to hear something like this from a kpop group" is such a MOOD when it comes to BTS! I don't listen to kpop music, it's not my taste, but BTS offer something different, their music is so deverse and takes a step beyond the typical kpop. I really enjoy their music.

I feel like giving them more background into Yoongi's life would've done a little more. The reason he had to give up his piano for a short while was because he injured his shoulder working to support his music dream in the first place, which he mentioned for a split second. Also, I always thought the lack of timing and instrumentals in the beginning paralleled that he didn't know music or the piano and was still learning. His talent and emotions eventually climaxed along with the music until he came to peace with it again.

  • @jihys5899

    @jihys5899

    6 жыл бұрын

Tbh the reason why he had give up his piano wasn't his shoulder, because like he is saying he had "comeback" to playing piano when he was 14, and the whole accident with his shoulder had place when he was like 18-19 years old. Most likely he had stopped playing piano because of his parents giving him a lot of pressure with studying and becoming "sucessful" and not approving of his dreams about being musician.

Yoongi is a genius. A musical genius. His soul is painted with music. His words are full of experience, wisdom, and the right type of judgement. I may never have the chance to meet this man that I have an undying love and respect for, but I hope he understands and knows, he is one that truly knows what being strong and inspiring means. Yoongi's lyrics have given me hope to live on. It's true though when in So Far Away, he said, "Yeah fuck, I live because I can't die." It's true. Life is so demanding. Life doesn't care about your feelings, thoughts, limits. No matter what, you can't die, you have to live through what life throws at you. Find hope in things in life and things to hold on to if you think you're drifting away.

Something I really realised was that this song is INTENSELY personal to suga. Like one of the commenters were saying you can really see that music was the thing that saved him that really kept him going in his darkness and despair and sure, maybe you can't relate to that but we can all relate to the desperation and sad points that everyone feels at points in their life. and for all the BTS fans we all know that music was yoongi's passion and saving light, he would produce songs and give them to people and face rejection after rejection. He dislocated his shoulder as a trainee while working one of his own part time jobs to support himself and didn't even tell his agency because he feared he would be cut. He was rejected even by his own family and when he thought he had finally reached the point where he was proud of how he came he bowed down to his parents on stage and literally sobbed with his face on the floor. ah, im getting so emotional but this song ENCAPSULATES this passion and his thankfulness to the piano, to music for saving him and giving him life in a way and the way he personifies the piano and thanks it may be weird to some but i think thats genuinely his relationship with it, the piano is a living thing for him its something that saved him and has been with him through his darkest depths and greatest heights and i think thats so beautiful for him to express that in this song. i love you so much yoongi, thank you. ah and thank you to this channel for reacting i enjoyed all your own personal reflections as artists :')

I just want to say that almost all people miss the means of one (1) particular part of lyrics from this songs.. It's "after the dawn, two of us We welcome the morning together" Some people think that part of the lyrics is weird in some way bc it looks like he sleep with the piano.. but it's not. the 'dawn' part means the hard time, when he suffering... and the 'morning' means success So "after the dawn, two of us We welcome the morning together" means after that hard time, we welcome success together. Like they are together in hard time until he succeed. Yoongi often likens the dawn and morning as hardship and success He used this lyrics in Tomorrow too.. "Because the dawn right before the sun rises is the darkest" = the time before succeed or when we achieve smth we want is the time where it is the hardest. No Pain No Gain.

Recently Suga was chosen to become full members of the Korean Music Copyright Association.😍💖 KOMCA is a nonprofit copyright collective with the goal of improving musical culture in Korea. To be promoted to a full member, musicians must have been junior members of KOMCA for three years or more, receive a certain amount in royalties each year and also be selected by the board of directors. Becoming a full member of KOMCA gives the artist the right to vote at general meetings of the organization. Suga is the first member of BTS to be promoted to full member of KOMCA and he won a Asia Music Award in 2017 as producer👍React to AGUST D - THE LAST

the day the album came out, before the translations were made, I listened to them all in a row. I got to First Love, was crying by the first chorus, bawling by the build up, sobbing after he stops and breathes. I had to stop the album there and stare at my wall for an entire nearly 2 hours, not even thinking, just sitting, crying, before I could collect myself and listen to the rest of the album. it took me like 5 hours to listen to the whole album. then I looked up the lyrics a day or two later and was SOBBING, also laughing at myself that I was so broken by a song about a piano

RM said that Suga used to recommend him some jazz songs to him, and we know that he played piano when he was a kid and since then grew his love to music. But in 6th grade, he fell in love with rap and hip-hop, plus he's a liberal art student and he liked reading and writing, he started making lyrics and rapping. But around this period of life, he fell into (inserts his AgustD's track The Last) and how he had to make a living in order to still producing music and making it big. Later he found himself back to his origin, aka the brown piano whom (it's personified right) he started everything with. I think that's what First Love track is.

I personally really loved that because in a way I think they're both right. As a musician myself, I recognize that I'm more like Peyton because I happened to find an instrument I did well with and I stuck with it for a little while and enjoyed the journey. As a singer, it's different. I almost feel compelled to sing since singing has been a part of my life literally since birth. Even though I don't share my singing professionally, I feel incomplete without it and view it as my first love too. In this case, I think good musicians and great musicians can be very skilled but it's passion that tends to separate the good musicians or artists from the great ones. That's what I see in BTS and that's what made me army.

I wish they gave a further backstory to Suga’s life, I think that would make the song a lot more meaningful. I think that this song Suga talks a lot about how music helped him out of his depression and was there for him when no one else was. Music saved him and the piano symbolizes that.

6:27 well, dear sir. For this guy, Min Yoongi, music was everything. He had nothing else. Music saved his life literally. And that's why he wants to "scream" his love for music in this song. So just because you don't relate or understand, please don't say that it's weird.

i think his comment is more like he loves music & his instrument but not to the point where he would think of it as a long-standing relationship sorta? it's kinda like "it's my hobby, i love doing it, it's my job, but that's it". some people aren't as emotional as others, even when it comes to things they like doing the most. what he said is still understandable given that he is not a bts fan, so he doesn't know much deeper on stuff and all the shit yoongi has been through with music & piano. it is still understandable, he's just reacting to stuff he was given to, from his point of view, as a fellow musician.

I loved that the guy in the checkered shirt tried to understand Yoongi's perspective and contrasted it with his own thoughts of music. The lyrics are that angsty and dramatic because music literally did save his life. Yoongi was going through a lot of mental health issues even when he was in BTS and I assume music would have been his greatest respite (but also source of insecurity). And a commentor here @Diana Carey thinks that the lack of timing and instrumentals parallels him still trying to learn the instrument. Which I can totally see. Wow. I also love how the more he doesn't want to go near the piano, the louder the music got as though it literally wouldn't let him leave until he accepted that the piano is a big part of him. Yoongi is a genius who at some point in this song didn't even have a beat and he deconstructed rap to pure poetry and narration. Just *slow clap*

MY favourite thing about First Love is,that near the end when Yoongi stops rapping and the music slows down to the point like it was in the beginning, he's out of breath showing how passionate he is about this song. As a whole this "out of breath"-thing in music always gets me more invested in these songs. Also the fact that Yoongi often cries a bit while he performs this song makes my eyes wet :') (i don't even know if everything is proper english, I hope I succeeded in conveying my thought)

I play piano but his passion for composing and expressing himself and even encouraging others (JK and Taehyung in particular) to write music promoted him from just me fangirling about BTS but also naming Suga (min yoongi) as one of my heros and role models.

katie's reaction, to me, was one of the most powerful ones by any of the reactors. because usually, she's so, so vocal throughout the reaction / song about what she thinks of the music, how it's portraying the lyrics, what the visuals are doing, etc. to see her so quiet was a bit of a shock (in a good way). i chose not to be a music major, but i sing when i'm sad, i sing when i'm happy, i sing when i'm angry, i sing no matter what. singing, playing the piano, playing my instruments- that is something that is deeply personal, and i'm glad that some of the reactors could agree and relate to that sentiment. also, in regards to what was said by either emiel or henry about this song lacking a proper, solid rhythm, i just want to say that i feel that this song's rhythm is meant to feel more colloquial. sort of like a monologue set to music. or better than that, it felt as though his rapping was setting the rhythm. in speeches, people tend to set a rhythm as they speak, and i think that's what yoongi did here. the rap leads the music, leads the rhythm, leads the song. i believe someone else commented on how the piano's complexity grows with the song, representing how he grew as a pianist, and i agree, hence why he has to lead the rhythm with his own instrument, his voice instead. voices can be as rhythmic as any other instrument. also, much love for yunyi & kevin as pianists who understand where yoongi is coming from...thank you guys for this reaction, it was the one i had been anticipating the most.

I am a writer and even I connected to this and I remember the first time I listened to it, I cried. And to be honest, I knew BTS but I never heard a whole rapping song because I am not into rapping. But it was the story of this song that made me go there and I just couldn't contain myself and I remember crying because when I was young, a lot of people said I write really well and then I just left it. I was happy but I never really appreciated the art in me and eventually just broke apart with it. And then I was struggling so much. I was mentally not feeling well for years and I just got back to writing and it was so emotional and it literally saved me. If I wasn't writing at that time, maybe I wouldn't have even been introduced to BTS in my life. When I heard First Love, I went to Reflection and I was crying because this is my journey with how writing saved me and Reflection is what I learned through the struggles that reflection put me in. I am a hardcore rapping line fan. I have a bit more love for their lyrics though I honestly love BTS completely!!!!!

First Love is my other favorite song, I am no musician but I need music to live (everything I do, I do it while listening to music, and it's, to me, one of the most important arts), I'm a writer and a painter. I understand how you all feel, not in the same way, but I understand. I literally cannot see myself doing something with my life that isn't writing or art, and it's a funny thing, because many days I hate it so much. I hate how inadequate I feel, like I am not enough for it, And I love art so much, and writing, but there are days that if I could I would set every word I've ever written and every canvas and paper and brushes on fire. I would burn it all. And yet, at the end of the day, the only thing that I can say has been with me since I was a small child is art, and even when I wanted nothing to do with it, it was there with me. At the end of the day writing and painting are the only things I can call my own. It has caused as much joy as heartbreak, and so, even if I'm not a musician, as an artist, I relate to Yoongi's lyrics a lot. I loved seeing this, the first time I listened to it and read the lyrics, I cried. Same with Jimin's Lie. Those are two songs I relate to a lot, and RM's Reflection also hits hard.

But considering they don’t realize how much shit Yoongi dealt with, from his unsupportive family, to living in poverty, to crushing his shoulder, not to mention his anxiety and depression and all the hate they received for years. I think it’s fair to say we all tend to get defensive especially when it comes to Yoongi cuz WE know what he’s been through but THEY don’t. This person’s honesty was really brave especially for our fan base cuz we love all the guys so so much. I don’t think he was being judgy I think he was being deeply honest and that’s the best kind of reaction we can get. He took time to explain why he didn’t connect to the song the way others did and it was actually surprising to me that his personal life experience with music mirrors his perception of the song. He also seemed almost hesitant with his words so as to not upset anyone but still gave his honest take on it. Our best move is to educate him on what Yoongi has been through so as to further his understanding of the meaning of the song and it’s intensity. Knowledge is power. Oh and, by the way, I super admire your honesty in how you felt about his reaction. Many people don’t or won’t say how they truly feel or they’re very rude about it and I’m so proud of you that you did so respectfully👏👏👏 Spoken like a true ARMY 💜

I feel like going into Yoongi's life story would have added so much to these musician's reactions and made it even more meaningful. As a child he loved music, especially piano, and was very much into that style. But around the end of elementary school, that is when he started getting into hip-hop and began to discover a passion for wanting to make a career out of being an idol. He loved music so much that he was willing to go against his parents to be able to make a life out of it. I cry every time I reach the part in the song where he speaks about his shattered shoulder. This is a big example of how I think his backstory would have helped. At that point in time, he had been an underground producer and rapper, making his own songs to sell to make end's meat. Because his parents had turned him away, he had to survive on his own and worked unbelievably hard to do so. He put so much effort into these songs that people would then steal. He would regularly have to choose between eating once a day or being able to take the bus. As he wasnt making enough money, he also got a job as a delivery boy. And one night, when he was out working so hard, he was hit by a car (he has mentioned how it was no more than a few centimeters away from crushing him completely) and his shoulder was completrly broken. This was mere months before he was to debut as an idol: the dream he had worked for his entire life and dedicated his everything to. But because of his shoulder, he couldnt play the piano (the one thing always there for him), and even had to stop b-boying, which was another one of his passions. And yet, he still didnt tell his agency, for fear of being cut from the group and not being able to follow his dream. He was willing to leave his parents, give up everything else, hide a broken shoulder despite constantly having intense dance practices, and work unbelievably hard despite his horrible depression for years with the hope of following this dream that he now thought he had lost. His love for music is what kept him going: his love for that brown piano. And because he never gave up, he saw his dream finally become real. And when it did, despite never having supported him previously, when he saw his parents in the audience filled with adoration, he bowed to those who had shunned him for having the dream they were now beholding, sobbing as I'm sure he remembered everything he had gone through that led to that moment. His story is one of the most inspiring I have ever seen: and also a reason why it frustrates me to see so many people not give this masterpiece of a song and this hero of a man a chance simply because they dont speak Korean. But even then: despite having so many haters saying they're nothing, just as his parents said he would never succeed, BTS is on top of the world and is daily changing millions of lives. If that doesnt show that music is more powerful than any language in existence, I dont know what does. 💜💜💜

There are hardly any songs on this topic to begin with. And I'm not a musician, but I am an artist and I can tell you this song expresses exactly what it is like to have a passion. A passion that you live and breathe for. The kind of passion that you don't know who you are without it. It is one of the most raw, human songs I've heard ever.

I was waiting for this for so long! That piano and music literally was the thing that saved him. He came from a very poor yet conservative environment and a family that expected him to just become a civil servant so he won’t have to struggle like they did. From his mixtape we know that he suffered from mental health issues growing up and pushed a lot of people away. Music was a place of comfort and expression for him. Until now he always reminds everyone that it’s ok to talk about your inner struggles, and it means a lot, especially in a country that has such a high rate of suicide yet no mental health awareness

I can really relate to this song, because I was really depressed when I was like around 13 and 14 and I completely lost all interest in anything and I stopped playing piano. Now, after a hard time recovering from everything, I am back to playing and it really saved me, because I finally could come back to something that I loved so much all this time.

How priveleged is that one dude to be able to "decide to just do music..." For a LOT of people they don't have the money or freedom to do so. Suga's situation is one such case. To the point where he went against his parents to pursue music. It was all he had. Please tell that dude how lucky he is to treat it like it is no big deal.

For me, First Love is such an important song. When I first listened to it with the lyrics I cried my eyes out. I relate to it so much, I even have a brown piano in the corner of my childhood home. What's important to realise here is that the piano also symbolises music as a whole. Music is always there to heal you and save you time and time again, it'll be there until your last days. First Love is a genius song and I hope it'll get the recognition it deserves even in the future.

The only thing different was the instrument of choice. Music saved me and I believe that while I may find a human to love, music will always be there as my one and only love

Ok. So I'm disappointed with about half of the reactors here... Really shallow comments and reactions. The music grows and builds as the song goes on, right along with the lyrics. Kind of like it's following his life, and his progression through music. All the solo songs had so much more meaning relating the music to the lyrics. It was caught in the other videos with the reactors but missed here... again, disappointing. There's so much raw emotion in this song! I think giving more background into how difficult his journey has been would have been more effective. Buuut at the end of the day I'm not on camera. So even though I disagree with many things said here, thank you for putting this out there and I hope you guys keep doing this.

Not everyone will react the same to a song as you reacted to it. As much as a hit this song is to some of us, it is and will be a miss to others. Music is music, and how someone takes it in will be different from how another person takes it in. It makes no sense why you'd be disappointed for their raw reactions. This song is as real as it gets for Suga's story. If a person listens to the song and understands it on a personal level, that's that. If they listen to it and don't find it as meaningful as others do, giving them more background information on his journey would not have made it more effective.

Agree wholeheartedly! When one of the reactors said That “the personification” in his opinion “was too much” or maybe he said that Yoongi “went to far with it” . I immediately had A very low-key psycho moment. If his partner hadn’t explained to him that it’s personal, I prob would’ve wrote a very nasty retort especially for him. How can you measure “too much” or “too far” when it’s someone else’s feelings on display? Also I feel like even tho the reactors are classical musicians with years of experience like Suga has years of experience weren’t quite grasping that’s it not just about the Piano, the object but also it’s about the piano as a metaphor for his music or more specifically his ability to create music. And also I noticed that only about half of the reactors could relate while the others didn’t to have any emotional context at all. But then again Suga was quite desperate at that time and had a lot more to lose so maybe his relationship with his instrument was very different from theirs. I will say that the last two reactors whose names I totally forgot (I’m so sorry guys) along with a few other reactors seemed impressed and that made me very happy because they can see what I saw and hear what I heard. Anyway, I’m glad some people could see Suga’s confession really about how that piano/music saved his life.

Of all the music that Yoongi has made, I believe the piano is where he finds comfort.. Knowing Yoongi's history this song is his life story, it is his struggle, and we should be so grateful that he shared it. (This Piano even shows up in Fake Love, and in one of BTS's Festa's. I cry every single time I hear this song. People hate on Kpop, I get made fun of daily because of my deep love for BTS, the thing is, I really honestly do not listen to other Korean artists. BTS touches my soul, they have a song to lift me through any mood I may be feeling and to told my hand through it all. Yoongi is a genius with music and I am so glad that people are starting to honor him for what he has been doing.

Yoongi ripped his heart out doing this song, and I was left in awe of his talent and ability. The way he gasps for breath like he has to get the words out before they choke him, and his incredible turns of phrase in his lyrics. His passion and drive for what he does is humbling, and he never ceases to amaze me.
