A couple of days ago I saw a concert snippet where Chance and Tim were standing next to each other, trading the bass back and forth. They are so so good at mimicking each other.

You are fast becoming my favorite reactor to my favorite vocal band. I love the breakdown you give and how you appreciate the complexity of what they do. Thank you for continuing this Home Free journey. I hope to see much more of them from you.

Totally agree, can’t wait to hear more of your reactions as you go down the Home Free rabbit hole, it’s a wonderful ride.

Chance has been known to joke that he only agreed to join the group if they let him sing bass some of the time, and you can see in some of their live performances when they pass the bass line backwards and forwards. But both he and Tim have sizeable ranges, so it doesn't mean the group is limited to only singing low. Sometimes you even get a song like Mayday, originally sung by a female artist, where they sing in the same key as the original.

Tim has a five plus octave range. Chance also has an impressive range. beautifully done

I love how you can pick out the individual voices! I liked Chris Rupp, and still follow him on his separate musical journey, but Adam Chance was a brilliant addition to the group. He had sung with them prior so they knew how he would blend with the group. Most people that think they hear a multi trac are just unaware that Chance and Tim can seamlessly trade back and forth. If you want to see for yourself how bass heavy they can get, after Christmas, check out their live version of Skull and Bones, a song Chance wrote for a video game. If you want to hear all 6 sing together, from Chris Rupp’s Chanel try What Child is This? It’s worth it. 🎶🥰 I look forward to seeing your reviews pop up. ❤

Also, it should be noted that Chris has a pretty remarkable range. Not Foustian, but he credibly covered the bass harmonies and walking bass when Tim was taking lead. Also he can go quite high - in O Holy Night, near the end, Austin has a solo line very high and Chris is seen singing the echo just a couple of steps lower, which is still very high.

Listening to you explaining the way they sing and why really makes me stand back in awe even more. Fantastic all round, you and Home Free. 🇬🇧

Yes Chance does have a similar tone to Tim so much so that people confuse the two when Chance sings the bass in a song. Chance was the bass in the a cappella group Street Corner Symphony before joining Home Free in 2016. He mostly sings baritone for Home Free and has a very rich voice in my opinion.

This is one of the special in that Adam Rupp sings and doesn't beat box. He has a lovely tenor voice but only wants to do harmony parts. There are a couple of short stints where he is featured. I am thinking particularly of How Great Thou Art where he brings in the It Is Well With My Soul. Thanks for the analyses.

You're right about Chance's bass he can sound just like Tim and a lot of reactors keep thinking that they just did a lay over of Tims base line. Although Chance can't go as deep as Tim's lowest note , Chance has a 4 octave range his highest note is A5, Tim has a 5 octave range. Nothing against Chris because his voice is really good but being Chance can come in at bass gives Tim more opportunities to sing higher than he use to. Also Tim and Chance in a couple of songs do double bass

Home Free does an amazing job at brilliantly simple--but still engaging--videos. Their 5-part harmonies are pure talent. You have uncovered Home Free's secret weapon, these guys have range and they can mix and match who sings what part. Gives them a depth of options that other groups lack and this is even better now that Adam Chance is with them. No set parts or leads, use who's best for the moment.

To get the real understanding and the way Tim and Chance support and compliment each other without being dark and bass heavy, check out Snow Globe , written by Tim.

Chance is actually a bass, he is functionaly the baritone for the group but he also covers for Tim. And both Tim and Chance also go higher

To hear how well Chance 'replicates' Tim, watch the live performance of How Great Thou Art from Dec 4, at the 1 minute mark, Tim carries the lead while Chance brings in the bass line. I wasn't watching the first time I played it and was startled to hear "Tim" where he couldn't be. But since you haven't reacted to HGTA yet, just watch those few seconds. (How Great Thou Art / It Is Well. @HomeFree Greeneville, TN NCAP) Adam has a tremendous vocal range. Not quite as high as Austin, from what we have been told, but he broke the sound system the other night with his lows - just like Tim, so him singing that F# seems totally realistic. I am really enjoying your dissections of the music. Thank you.

Thanks! How Great Thou Art is on my list, so will probably get round to it in the not-too-distant future 👌 I can't wait to hear more of Adam - he seems incredibly versatile, from the beatboxing to his (in my opinion) luscious and floaty tenor range, and apparently system-breaking lows?! 😅 WOW!

If you count his throat bass and whistle notes, Adam actually has the widest range in the group. There's a song -- "Sold" -- that a lot of folks who do vocal range videos use to show Tim hitting a B0, but Tim has said that's Adam down there (Tim does hit a B0 in a couple other songs, just not that one). If you can find a drum solo from this or last Christmas, Adam actually harmonizes with himself via looper (and does a whole lot of percussion) to create a gorgeous, Trans-Siberian Orchestra-like arrangement of Carol of the Bells. So, he does sing lead. A lot. Just not the way people are quite expecting.

@@nancyholter5646 Yeah, I recorded him last year, but we were about halfway back and there's some conversation at the very start. Also, holding a phone up and still for 10+ minutes is *hard*!

I have to say, after listening to just about everything they have done, Rob has the most beautifully refined voice in the group, and he can cover anything from angelic, to funk that he has dug right up out of his toenails. I think that they are all the best at what they do, but Rob is the one who can really bring the tears to your eyes.

If you really want to hear the contrasting bass between Tim and Chance, check out #HomeFree "Snow Globe." Chance carries the bass for most of the song while Tim sings tenor. Great reaction, Sir Hairless.

Your analysis is so awesome, in each of the 5 Home Free songs you've done so far, and I just CANNOT wait till you do "Helplessly Hoping" and "Brothers in Arms", those two are harmony megafests :) Regardless of which Home Free song you pick, it's bound to be awesome, as long as you keep them coming! :) There are two of their tracks that could help you understand the group a little better, and would perhaps help you with the doubts on whether things are multi-tracked, those would be Adam Rupp's Drum Solos, and "9 to 5 - Beatboxing Breakdown"

SIR! You are REALLY superb with your explanations. You hit all the parts of this particular version, that I have totally LOVED. They are the parts where I just want to MELT, because of the WONDERFUL closeness of the harmonies that are held to exactly the right lengths to produce their lovely, lasting effects, even after they've begun to move on to the next combination. You see, I grew up with a Mom who played violin, accordion, piano, electronic keyboard, organ, ukelele, bells, recorders, castanets...even things like water glasses lined up and filled with variations of water depths (or even different liquids, for some very strange effects). Plus both she and my dad sang, beautifully (and they DANCED...on either roller or ice skates, or in shoes, or barefoot). Mom started playing violin at age 5, was professionally trained (and could play pretty much anything classical, the way it SHOULD be played), yet she favored dance music and syncopation, and during her later years, she LOVED bluegrass fiddling, more than anything else. While she was still playing (into her mid-80s, both at home, and in public), she began corresponding with Shoji Tobuchi, and a year or so later, she attended one of his wonderful Christmas presentations, in Branson, Missouri. When she and her friends from church (all musicians) arrived, they were met at the bus and escorted inside, by a troop of ushers, and seated in seats that were far better than what they had paid for. Once they were all seated, the troop of ushers came SKATING by them, and each one (of 12) handed my mom a single, red rose. She had told Shoji that my dad (who had passed away about 10 years before then) would always give her a single red rose for her birthday, Christmas, and their anniversary. So she ended up with 12 red roses (enough for the entire year, Shoji said). Then, at the intermission, she was called on stage and presented to the audience as Shoji's most-loved mentor, and she got to play his violin for a few minutes! Then she was told that after the concert, she could go to their merch tables, and take WHATEVER she wanted home -- free of charge. Being the frugal person she was, and understanding how much it costs to set up that kind of a table, she took half a dozen CDs, and that was it. He tried to get her to take more, and she wouldn't. My sister now has those CDs, since Mom went on (at age 90) to be with the Lord, in 2014. We love Shoji's music, too. When we listen to him play, we basically hear our Mom -- their styles were so similar. We kids all learned music at her hands, plus we had a WONDERFUL school music teacher (both band and choir). She taught ALL the grades -- elementary, middle, and high school -- all the time I was growing up. What Mom didn't teach us, Mrs. Miller did. After she left to go live in Texas when her husband got transferred down there in 1968, when I was a Sr. in high school, one of the senior boys and I took turns keeping both the choir and band going. We just continued doing what she had taught us (which included how to conduct) from kindergarten on, and both he and I also had parents who were musicians. That was one of the best experiences in my life -- especially getting to lead the pep band, which was my favorite group in which to play. I played cornet/trumpet from 8th grade forward. I also play piano, organ, accordion, and various other instruments like recorders and penny whistles. Daddy also taught us how to create willow whistles, when we were all small. They make LOVELY music, if you do it correctly...such fun! My mom and her two sisters organized a small dance band back when they were in grade school, with their dad's help. They even opened, one summer, for Lawrence Welk! In 1966, two years after the 1964 Alaska earthquake (we lived in Valdez), three of my friends from school and I began our own band. We played and sang a lot of Joan Baez and Bob Dylan music, plus songs by our favorite group (The Mamas and the Papas). We played and sang together until the end of 1968, for just about every celebration in our little town of Valdez. Since then (until I had about a 15-year period, due to rheumatoid arthritis, that knocked out all except my bass -- yes, bass -- range) I've sung in choirs all up and down the Pacific coast. Now that I've had both hips replaced, I've been recovering my range, though I'm not QUITE back to my slightly-over six-octave range. I can still sing nearly all of Tim's songs, but can't QUITE reach his LOVELY lowest note in "Misty Mountains" (which he sings with Peter Hollens). I've JUST (at age 74, now--since November 29) gotten back to where I can hit Austin's highest note, since I began hearing and watching Dan Vasc sing, on April 9, 2023. In later years, all of my own kids have also become both musicians and singers, and now most of my 22 grandchildren are the same. I also know that at least ONE of my five great grandchildren is on the same track. I got a short video my oldest daughter, a couple of months back, showing her granddaughter (four-year-old Amelia) marching around with a little drum and a recorder (the instrument, by the way), making her own imaginary parade, and sounding pretty darn good on those instruments! Jen captioned the video, "Like Great Grandma like Great Granddaughter." 😀 So when I listen to you reacting to music I already know and love (just these two times, so far, but I'm looking forward to MUCH more), I am TOTALLY LOVING IT! I'm greatly looking forward to more, and I still do hope you pick up on Dan Vasc's music soon. (grin) Thanks again, for this very lovely reaction. I'll do my best to not write an entire book from now on, though I'm a writer, as well, so...

If you want to hear Adam Chance’s base voice listen to their cover of mayday. Tim sings the tenor lead, and chance covers the bass. You won’t be disappointed.

Love hearing you put words to our inarticulate thoughts about what #homefree is doing. This is a perfect example of their riding that very fine line, as they always do, between respect for the original and making a song their own. I think amplifying the Hallelujah was brilliant -- it is, after all, a Hallelujah!

There are no singers on the planet ..... even close ! The Harmonic wave surrounding you in giving an ear the blessing of Angelic beauty in musical chorale sedative .... you are merely a passenger on the Home Free ride ..... with smile and peace ! By the way Adam CHANCE is a three register vocal talent ... near as good as Tim (Foust) .... he was thee BASSIST vocal in Street Corner Symphony before being sent (Heaven Sent perhaps?!) to Home Free clan. So beautiful, but unfortunately so short. What I love is that the harmony is so good, but you still recognize their different voices. Every vote is important in this. Chance with his baritone/bass voice has been a very good replacement for Chris Rupp, although you should not underestimate Chris 😉

I feel like I re-learn music when I watch your reactions and analysis. I was I an a cappella touring concert choir in high school, but didn’t continue with music education. Wish I had. I really love the keys they chose and that key change was great. Their voices blend so well. Chance was a bass in his previous a cappella group, Streetcorner Symphony. I believe Chance has a 4 octave range and Tim’s is 5 octave.

Tim Foust and Adam Chance both have amazing 5+ octave ranges, and the group love to use them to their full potential. It is absolutely crazy trying to figure out who is going to sing what, as they can both sing bass, tenor, and baritone, as well as taking the lead. it keeps things interesting and keeps the others on their toes so to speak. They can come up with an almost infinite number of possibilities of combinations because of this. It is never boring listening to them. i'm guessing that is one of the many reasons they are so popular.

Man -- yer good!!! Picking voices and who's where : ) One of the oddities (and a big part of "rare") is the textures can be so similar making it hard to differentiate --- but each can be their own and that is distinct!!! What sound do you want and where do you want it??? Then it's who's available -- the pairings and blends ... unbelievable. Chris did cover bass while LIVE and done very well, having a tough range to beat, while Tim took lead. Chance was hand-picked by the group ... and the sound he brings, that smokey, smooth and warm -- and boy what a choice it was. There is so much more to experience with these guys. Love your reactions and how you explain what we are hearing. I would highly suggest you react to Home Free singing, "Do You Hear What I Hear" It is another Christmas song and they sang it in an ice castle. I am going to see them perform in Dallas in March. This will be my 9th time going to see them. They are even more impressive live. Tim's deep bass notes vibrate your chair and your body. This first time you experience it you are shocked.

I was trying to scroll through the comments to see if anyone told you about the older version Home Free did of this song. The collaborated with violinist Taylor Davis and changed the song entirely with a different bar. You probably have so many songs lined up, that best to watch it just for your own pleasure. Would be great to hear how you liked it tho. Often the bass ”on duty” sings it all through the song even when they have short solo parts. For example Hillbilly Bone. On live performances they switch seamlessly. Thanks for the great reactions and analyses! Looking forward to more Home Free !

I have really enjoyed your reactions of home free. You seem to really value classical music. I know you want but if you really value great music you truly need to react to Austin’s solo performance if Bring Him Hime from La Mes. I know you are quite familiar with this famous song. You will see the true Austin and why he is such a great high tenor. I feel it will be worth your time if you truly enjoy the classics

Tim has said that Adam Rupp has the greatest range in the group. Tim has a 5 octave range, working on 6.

This is so awesome! Chris Rupp does have a low bass range as well. Check out Chris's rendition of Amazing Grace. It will blow your mind. Chance has a beautiful Bariton/Bass voice. Home Free are the best! Love your reaction!

Such a beautiful rendition. Loved your analysis. Chance can sing pretty low but I’m not sure he can sing lower than or match Tim. Others would probably know. I love Home Free. Have a very Happy Christmas! 😍😄🥰

It is an old one so you’ll hear Chris Rupp instead of Chance. It is incredibly layered and I’d love to watch you pull it apart and analyze it! I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts!! Chance doesn’t have quite the range that Tim does. Chance is about 4 octaves, Tim’s is 5+. When you get to Mayday after Christmas, you’ll hear both Chance and Tim’s voices

Tim says Adam has the widest range of the group, but yes, Adam is usually sings tenor when he sings. And Home Free doesn’t use multi-tracking, because they also perform all of these live in concert

Thanks for the info @@jillchamberlain6478 ! As for multi-tracking, live performances doesn't *necessarily* mean multi-tracking isn't used in studio versions - as we can see with PTX. Others have said that Home Free definitely use looping at times, but not sure if that covers layering too - guess we'll find out in future reactions! Thanks for watching 🙏

@@SirHairless Yes...they started using the looping system in 2017, after they started presenting "Castle on the Hill" (Ed Sheeran cover), and "Man of Constant Sorrow." My youngest daughter, one of her boys, and I went to a concert that fall, and it was SO great! They were showing off the looper for one of the first times, near the end of that year's tour. They're still using it, and making more and MORE use of it, these days. I love it! There are still no instruments, and it's still sounds coming directly from them, right there at the concerts, but you get the benefit of as many parts as they want to enter! 😀

Thier harmonies are so so good. Ear candy really. My mom thinks they are the best a capella group out there. There is another popular a capella group on the scene, as I'm sure you know, VoicePlay. Homefree being more country and PTX more pop, VoicePlay is more rock if I had to describe them. I haven't listened much but they have a great fan base which may increase your subs. Just a thought. Now back to the song. I love your analysis and how you mention you don't have to know how to read music or understand ( or something like that) to hear what you're hearing. The more I watch you the more I want to learn. I mentioned to my son is like to learn the piano and he said you're never to old haha. And it would be inspired by your reactions. So thank you. Maybe I will. Homefree has some great songs after Christmas. They, like PTX were the winners of the Sing Off. Man of constant Sorrow is wonderful. Traveling soldier really showcases their harmonies too. Happy listening. Glad to have you reactinf to a capella

Thanks April - yes, VoicePlay and Voctave are both on my radar due to many recommendations. I'd like to organically get round to them and not just rush in case it might get me more subs - so I imagine I'll get round to them after the new year at some point, but not sure how soon! I'm just about getting into PTX and Home Free 😅 SO MUCH CONTENT OUT THERE TO REACT TO, ARRGHH 😂 Oh, 100% never too old to start! Not sure if you play other instruments or not, but the key to learning an instrument is just consistency (you'll see incredible gains with only 10-15mins a day); most people quit within a year, but once you cross that barrier and start to be able to play more difficult/fun/impressive things (whatever your goal is), it just keeps you wanting to continue! Oo I've not been recommended Traveling Soldier before - added to my list! Thanks, as always

Chris Rupp recommended Chance to replace him. Chance was singing bass in his prior accapella group (Street Corner Symphony). However Chance's range allows him to sing trio with the tenors when Adam and Tim are handling rhythm. It also gives Tim the opportunity to sing lead and join the tenors in trio. There are several songs where Tim and Chance are doubling bass through much of the song (ex. Bless The Broken Road). A good example where Tim does a strong bass/barotone lead throughout the song and Chance does only bass is Mary Did You Know. The next is Mayday, where Tim is singing high lead tenor to begin and then switches to what might be called in choral groups, third tenor.

Chris has stated that he had no part in selecting his replacement Chance. (A KZread video in which QofyReacts interviews Chris from a few years ago.)

Chance was already friends of Home Free's, especially Tim, when they chose him to replace Chris. He actually appears in a Home Free video (House Party) long before he was tapped to join. As well as being a member of Street Corner Symphony, he was also good friends with the Marion family, including Jenika, Tim's wife (fiancee at the time Chance joined Home Free). Matter of fact, if you watch the Sea Shanty Medley, you'll see Tim is standing in a boat in the middle of someone's yard. The yard is his brother-in-law's, who also lives in Nashville, but the boat belonged to Chance, who lives near LA, but stored his boat at Tim's brother-in-law's place. So, yeah, it's almost like they share family.

I heard Tim worked with Chance to match their timbre. So it sounds seemless when they switch back and forth. Chance can sing pretty low, but can't sing as low as Tim. Not many people can. Chance is a natural baritone not a bass, even though he was a bass in the last group he was in. One of the judges on The Sing Off commented on their group that they didn't have a real bass.... ouch. I'm sure Tim worked with Chance in the same way he did with Avi & Geoff. Geoff from Voice play also was on The Sing Off and he didn't sing near as low then as he does now. Also, Chris did do bass from time to time, but he doesn't sing as low as Chance or Tim. Tim's range has been documented as A0-A5. Yes, that's right. I always enjoy your analyses of the songs.

Unfortunately no time this year now that Christmas has passed! But it's one for the future for sure

Adam Chance feat The Hound and the Fox. Wayfaring Stranger. kzread.info/dash/bejne/onZotbt-ndqonps.html I was shocked when I realized I like his voice almost as Avi's. This gives you more insight into his voice, which I consider better than Tim's though Tim does have that great 5+ octave range and I have no clue what kind of octave range Adam has. I just like his sound. We all have our favorite sounds and Chance is #2 after Avi to my listening ears.

I can't rule out that my bias is showing here, but this is not my favourite rendition of Silent Night. For me, the harmonic complexity did overstep the bounds of a lullaby. It sounds discordant to my ear, if that's the correct terminology. I'm not dissing the individual voices or their accuracy, I'm just not fond of the arrangement. It feels more like a perfect exercise in harmonics than a lullaby. The solo was beautiful, and the best part, IMHO. Wonderful analysis, as always!

There's really no reason that "Silent Night" should be thought of as a lullaby. The song is just stating the fact that during an otherwise silent night, something very amazing happened. In fact, it actually calls for rejoicing. Plus, the "Lamb of God" was born inside of an area where there were plenty of other noises from the animals within. All of which doesn't mean that you don't hear the chords differently. People do, and harmonics affect different people in different ways. The ones produced in this song affect me in a way that I LOVE. On the other hand, most of the newer Pentatonix music simply grates on my nerves and makes me want to throw my headphones out the window, even though other people are madly in love with the newest version of PTX.

From a fundamental lyrical standpoint, for sure 👍But many people grew up with this sung to them as a lullaby, and they will sing it to their offspring, and so on, for many generations past and I'm sure many generations to come. There must be so many songs out there that are mostly known for something that wasn't their original intention, but that's just how it goes! The other obvious example being 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' - originally a french song with an entirely different sentiment(!), which was then popularised by Mozart's twelve variations on that song, and then the lyrics in English were set to the melody and the well-known lullaby was born 🎶

I love Home Free and their harmony. This is beautiful but the first verse is a bit distracting for me. To much dissonance. I definately liked the second verse more. Seeing them live was wonderful. There is another Silent Night I would recommend. It is Pentatonix with the King Singers. Its from PTX's Holidays Around the World released last year. There is a yule log Video for your listening pleasure! Cheers.
