Classic WNBA: 1999 All-Star Game

Спорт

Broadcast courtesy of ESPN - The last 1:20 is cut off because the tape ran out, but it should be clear which conference won by that point.
In 1999, women's sports got a giant boost when the U.S. Women's National Team took home the FIFA Women's World Cup at the Rose Bowl.
A short time later, the WNBA made history as well, hosting the inaugural All-Star Game at Madison Square Garden. The late Whitney Houston performed the Star-Spangled Banner, and Cynthia Cooper took part in a halftime contest where she would win $1,000,000 for a fan if she hit a halfcourt shot. Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt served as color analyst for ESPN. You'll also hear from Carolyn Peck, who was the head coach of the Orlando Miracle at the time.
Van Chancellor, in the middle of his dynasty run with the Houston Comets, coached the Western Conference. Linda Hill-MacDonald, who experienced success with the Minnesota Golden Gophers and Cleveland Rockers, took the helm of the Eastern Conference.

Ahh, the days when it seemed the Liberty would bring a basketball championship back to NY. That dream, for the women's or men's teams, seems even more distant these days. It's still great watching this part of history that was integral to my teenage life in the 90s from the very first "We Got Next" commercial.

Love the WNBA to death, ever since its inaugural yr. of 97, watched yrs. of women's collegiate & Olympic basketball before then, but royally hated that commercial. Got under my skin even more when I'd come on during a playoff game. Many think that's an oxymoron.

Oh Whitney, Whitney. you can tell in this video she was already heading down the path to her untimely demise. Singing was all over the place, the way she was acting was all over the place. It was a far cry from the star spangled banner she sang a few years earlier that we all still listen to this day. Bobbie Brown ruined this legend. Damn shame.

I wonder though how many seats then were filled from paying attendees compared to now? For example, the Mystics led in attendance for years during Abe Pollin's ownership/control because the team gave away 20-30% of their tickets. American sports culture and purchasing power are not there yet (but slowly changing) to make women's professional sports leagues profitable.

Perhaps. But I actually truly loved how they could just laugh at their own selves back then. They did train hard, prepare, but starting about 08, a lot of them started taking it too seriously in my estimation, so they became less fun. I know the 3rd wave feminists are going to want my head for this, but I actually genuinely followed women's basketball high school, collegiate & pro since middle school, and loved the many ways that it was different from the men's in general.

Sport is important for all of us to stay healthy. Whether you like it or not it is important to have professional sports for women as it inspires girls from a young age to get involved in sports and hopefully stay playing a sport for the rest of their lives whether they become professional sport stars or not. It is important to promote and support all sports both male and female. Women are getting sick at all ages because they are unhealthy. Men need to grow up and support womens sports

It's not too late. The talent level was high in 1999. The women now can make tons of cash overseas. NBA salaries are $40,000 to $100,000. Britney Griner made $600,000 this year overseas. The WNBA needs to up the pay. There is no motivation other than being home for a few months. More money is key.

okay im done where in the world did all the fans go at in the years to come for the wnba i mean it was alot of teams that defunt from the leauge due to either moving or just folding cause of arena population my thing is if the nba has over 1,000 people at a game everytime then why not thewnba as well with 1,000 or more and i dont mean spaced seats i mean a packed house because to me thats disrespectfull thatalot of people used to come espicially men then said no and now only women. uk maybe they should make some promotions for more fans to come to games cause im in dc and the mystics when i was 5 was a packed house i thought it was a wizard game lol but now idk what in the world happened and its not everywhere the top 2 teams with a packed house are suns, minnesota. also they should go back to the regular jerseys but i think they were thinking that it was like a nba gm rather than a wnba with them on but they need to do something about this unpacked house thing espicially in dc

The attendance/support and possibly financial stability of the league in recent years has gone down compared to this part of the WNBA's history but the support it still there. A lot of men are behind this league and I think that's great. I guess we will just have to see how it all plays out.
