2000 WNBA Finals - Game 1: Houston Comets vs. New York Liberty

Technically known as the WNBA Championship, the final round of the 2000 playoffs was a rematch of the previous year's contenders. The Houston Comets were looking to add a fourth straight title to their name with the original "Big Three" of Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson. New York intends to counter with Sue Wicks, Teresa Weatherspoon and Becky Hammon.

    I watched the WNBA at this time and Houston Comets were in a class all by themselves with Cooper, Swoops, Thompson and the the various 4th and 5th players in that were in that mix. At the time of this game, it would be outrageous to think that in just eight years, the Comets would cease to exist. RIP Houston Comets, 1997-2008, the WNBA's first dynasty.

    Teresa Weatherspoon was the Allen Iverson of the WNBA during this time! Cynthia Cooper and Sheryl Swoopes were like MJ and Scottie

    T-Spoon was never a scorer like Iverson was. Cooper and Swoopes are MJ and Pippen respectively, but those two and Thompson together are Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green.

    I agree @BrownBrother27 and I consider her to be the Gary Payton of the WNBA because they both are defensive players.

    +BrownBrother27 I would consider Cooper, Swoopes, and Thompson the Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Larry Bird of the WNBA.

    +KWCline91 I don't see Cooper, Swoopes, or Thompson being Magic Johnson. None of the three Comets stars had the passing abilities like Magic did. Ticha Penicheiro would be close to Magic Johnson except she was not a scorer. Cooper played shooting guard unlike Johnson's point guard/point forward role. I chose Cooper as Jordan over Swoopes because the Comets did not return to the WNBA Finals/Championship after Cooper retired in 2000 and prematurely in 2003. Swoopes is a small forward keep in mind and was more known as a dual threat on both offense and defense than Jordan. Cooper, if she were a few years younger when the league started, would've scored ~3,500 points in about a season and a half.

  • @KWCline91

    @KWCline91

    +BrownBrother27 I wasn't talking about the passing abilities. Ticha Penicheiro was more John Stockton or Steve Nash. I was talking about the stardom. Here's the problem. Swoopes was dubbed the female Michael Jordan because she was the scorer and played great defense. Jordan was also a dual threat as well on offense and defense. Cooper was Magic because she was the sparkplug and she ran the offense. She also had games where she scored a lot, but so did Magic. We're talking three of the all-time best players on the WNBA on the same team.

    Reggie Miller is a PERFECT Example of "starting from the bottom now we here"... He commentated the WNBA Finals and a little over 5 years later he started to do TNT games and has received promotions from the network (More Thursday Night Games, All-Star game, March Madness and Conference Finals) Woooooooooow! Also Im amazed he did this a few months after losing to the Lakers in the NBA Finals

    NateIII11 This is interesting because when Reggie starts talking during the pregame segment, he sounds incredibly tentative and unsure of himself. And it makes sense. He was a player, he wasn't a broadcaster then. Not every player can just jump in front of the mic and be off and running and that showed. He really has come a long way since this. Shows it takes time and work to be a good broadcaster too.

    Basketball is basketball. Whether in 2000 or 2019. It just depends on what your expectations are. Airtime on major networks is what's wrong. I can't find a game unless I search all over. But folks have never taken women's sports seriously. A flashy dunk is still only 2 points but folks, most often young men, would rather see a guy slam a ball through a hoop than a girl hitting a 3 pointer. I'm sure there are exceptions out there who will argue that but when there are comments here saying the WNBA isn't like it use to be? I say basketball is basketball. It still has the same point system. Good calls, bad calls. No difference or maybe people just don't like the fact that some of these women are gay.
