Classic Tailback - Jerome Bettis Notre Dame Highlights
Спорт
A compilation of some of Jerome Bettis' highlights at the University of Notre Dame. The "Bus" grounded and pounded defenses for two years in South Bend before going on to a hall of fame career in the NFL. Bettis was basically an automatic touchdown on the goal-line, as no team had an answer when Notre Dame would ram him into the endzone from the middle of their patented T-formation.
The games I used to take the clips from can be found on Stephen Barnett's youtube channel (and there were a few other channels I used as well that you can find if you look around): / sbbarnet. .

That’s a straight-T. The Double Wing has the half-backs lined up off the outside hip of the TE or Tackle if there’s a split-out (see Air Force’s ‘slot-backs’). It’s cool to see the old Belly-G scheme.

Back again in 2021 to watch this hidden gem.
Love that full house horseman backfield.
One of Lou Somogyi, sports writer/editor's Blue and Gold magazine covers: "Good, Better, Bettis."
Bettis was an athletic freak he was bigger than half of the Defensive lineman he went against and had the agility of a cat I loved watching him play at Notre Dame in that offense
People didn't hardly realized the depth of this RB crew. Bettis and his back mate Reggie Brooks, replaced legends of Anthony Johnson and Ricky Watters. Also standing behind and alongside them was Ray Zellers, Dorsey Levens, Rodney Culver, Marc Edwards, Lee Becton, Autrey Denson, Randy Kinder, Jeff Burris(CB/RB) and Ryan Grant. All was NFL starters. Only college you can compare as more talented is Miami, but the difference is Bettis,Grant, Levens and Watters all have SB rings.

Talked to Tony Rice, asked him how Dorsey Levens could transfer to Ga. Tech ring up almost 2000 yards, get drafted by Green Bay have 4 Pro-Bowl years and not get on the field at ND? Rice said, "He wasn't good enough" My jaw dropped.

Any team that scored first on ND, Lou would run at'em 15 times if he had to never pass and stick right back up their butt. Probably his greatest statement telling the other team that this game was being played for keeps.
I remember watching Norte Dame during this era in the mid 90’s . This was when Norte Dame would just beat teams up. They were tough. Bettis was the fullback and Culver and Brooks split time at tail. Each of the running backs back then weighed over 225 lbs. could you imagine playing an entire game with these big bruisers punishing the defense every play?

I CANT believe how stupid the coaches are to DO this in the past; give Fullbacks the ball with a useless Tailback out of the play behind the FB! The dominant formation was what Madden used to call 'Proform' split backs; not I formation; when the FB got the ball the HB blocked. Not with 90's Notre Dame though!! You have Bettis and you don't even give him his OWN FB or at least put the HB in position to block someone? I formation running its ALREADY a disadvantage; 9 blockers because QB and ball carrier don't block; now lets make it 8 on 11? Bettis is a beast just for breaking runs in THAT stupid set up.
@anthonymoody6711

Walter White what you don't realize is that USELESS tailback was often Ricky Watters. The Bus pounded the middle and opened up the outside for Watters and the passing game.
The only player I ever saw who at one point had more tds than yards lol
Love hearing the pads poppin like in the Penn State game.
He had such great nimble feet for someone his size. It was amazing to watch him tiptoe through the hole and then hit that second gear for as big as he was. One of my all-time favorite players! But I was also a die-hard Browns fan so I loved and hated him LOL
I love the Full house and Wing T and Straight T, that the Irish used. So cool. The straight to power, lmao, love it!
Marc Edward's and the bus. You couldn't beat those two.
Not a huge Norte Dame fan but love old school football. A couple things, Irish had bad luck while Bettis was there. Always felt like his Freshman year they should of won the title vs Colorado. Rocket ran that punt back.. Bettis’s last year they lost to Stanford which snowballed them. A big reason they lost that game was Bill Walsh was the NBC analyst for a few years before taking the job in Palo Alto. Still, it’s damn impressive that Bettis avg. 5.7 a clip and I’d say 85% of his work was between the tackles. His last year he did play some TailBack to close games out.

That Florida game was a killer for the Gators. I was in my sophomore year...
Human battering ram. Wearing out the opposing defense. Beat my Gators in the Sugar Bowl back in the day.
Still vividly remember the game he obliterated Florida in the Sugar Bowl.
It's hard to tackle a hard-running 250 pound back when the OL is opening holes you could drive a Peterbilt through.

Anybody remember that bowl game he drug 3 or 4 defenders on his back into the end zone like 20 yards? It was against Texas or Tennessee I can’t remember
This has to be said, Lou Holtz did not use him properly. Just think what Bettis would've done with a lead back blocking for him!
@PockyCandy
7 жыл бұрын
I think that he would've been great with at halfback, with fullback in front of him too, since he'd be have more room to build up speed. And he'd have been much better as a fullback in Oklahoma's wishbone as well. Defenses would've been so distracted trying to account for everyone else in the 'bone that Bettis would've had huge lanes to run through.
