Jim Power: The Lost Dimension in 3-D review! classicgameroom.com/vaultpages... e-lost-dimension-in-3d-super-nintendo/
Classic Game Room reviews JIM POWER: THE LOST DIMENSION in 3D for SNES from 1993! Jim Power travels through time and space to platform, explore, space ship battle and die in this mashup of every game genre from 1993 at once! Wild colors, bizarre level designs and insane difficulty overshadow what is an ambitious game with some great music.

That Parallax scrolling gives me a ultra hard head ache lol
This game. They were so pre-occupied with if they could they didn't stop to think if they should!

I don't think you're giving them their due credit. Their programmers have done things which nobody's ever done before.
All fear Jim Power and his very long titled game. It will give you seizures AND fill you with his...Jim Power Sauce! Also, why is he shooting watermelons out of his hands?!
Said in Mark's voice: "You know what dimension needs its own game? The EIGHTH dimension. Buckaroo Banzai. Great movie. How was this... NOT... a game." Seriously, though. A Buckaroo Banzai game would be awesome even nowadays.

***** Maybe a reboot, so they could do the whole series like they'd originally planned? Imagine it as a web series! Josh Duhamel as Buckaroo Banzai, Jeff Goldblum having a cameo as his dad, and Mark making a guest appearance as one of the aliens! I think a game would be best though. A Master System-styled mixed genre platformer-space shooter, like this game only, you know, fun looking, filled with pixellated John Lithgows and badly digitized jamaican accents.

Wow that is one of the hardest games to watch. I can't imagine playing it. That parallax scrolling is absolutely ridiculous.
"a patchwork quilt combined with an ice cream headache" ~ Mark CGR, 2015. Literary masterpiece
that's the most parallax i've ever seen bar none.
whoa this game looks trippy with all its colours, eye bending parallax backgrounds and mix of every game genre that existed at that point in time.
I still have this game, awesome times.
I couldn't even look at the screen for most of the review. If not for our host's handsome mug, I don't know if I would have survived this trip into the "3-D dimension."
What in the actual fuck is going on with that scrolling in the background. It scrolls, fucking, backwards. Doesn't it? I can't tell anymore, my brain hurts.
@wurty

yup and they got the scrolling speed wrong too. The mountains in the far back scroll the fastest when they should be the slowest.

The game was originally designed to be played with a pair of (polarized?) 3d glasses which came with the cart, hence the "in 3D" bit. Even if they had been smart enough to disable the utterly nauseating scrolling effect for non-3D play, that'd be only one of it's many, many problems dealt with.

You can actually use a pair of sunglasses and just tilt them to one side and effectively get the same results with the 3-D in this game. Try it out. It's actually sort of impressive when it isn't making me want to puke lol
The moment Mark mentioned Captain Power I immediately remembered what he was talking about. The fusion of gold colored toys, vhs video, and light gun gaming all rolled into one. Sure it was gimmicky but I remember loving it!
Seeing your shows is more fun than any tv show!
SO MUCH PARALLAX. Also, I misheard Mark the first time, and thought he said Captain Planet, lol.
Just looking at this game, i can see parts of castlevania, Contra, Ghost n goblins, Gradius..really is quiet a mash up.

Qirex2097 yeah that background looks so sickening, why everything is moving right when foreground moves left? Doesn't make any sense
you must have known my lunch break is right now, to upload this at this very moment
Bought this game about 6 months ago. Like you said, I played it once---and on the shelf it goes!
I'm surprised Mark made no mention that this game came with 3D glasses to use for this game...it was natively 3D based on the color scheme it used...

It's a bit hard for Mark to review something that wasn't sent in, which makes me wonder, did the person that sent this in not have the 3D glasses either?

Tommohawked The 3D glasses are easy to make yourself.
My wife has epilepsy. She hasn't had a seizure in 5+ years, but I don't think she'd even be able to watch this review. Dang. I about had one myself.
Damn that shmup level is beautiful!
"Vegeta! What's the scouter say about his power level?" "..... It's over Jim Thousand!!!!" "WHAT?! JIM THOUSAND?!??"
The Amiga version is very playable and doesnt have headache inducing scrolling.
Someone mentioned glasses that came with this "Together with the 3D glasses that were packaged with the game, designed around the Pulfrich effect, this provided a unique "3D" experience for the time when polygonal 3D graphics were rudimentary and too expensive to implement" on wiki
How I miss the CGR show and its unique presentation.
That classic amiga parallax, audio and polish overload look and feel. Not a bad thing but different.
That music is indeed going on my iPod.
Ahhh..... I used to love this on the Amiga. Never even knew they did it on the SNES too.
That game came with 3D glasses which is why the background scrolls in the opposite direction: it creates the 3D effect when you are wearing the glasses. You can make your own, just get some cheap dollar store sunglasses and punch out one of the lens.
@Newtonip

lassi kinnunen You misunderstood me. The glasses do not change the direction of the scrolling. When you wear the 3D glasses (I have this game and the glasses), the background still scrolls the wrong way but it appears to be behind the screen. If they had it scrolling the right way, when wearing the 3D glasses, the background would appear in front of the screen. That is why they have it scrolling the wrong way. Note that when you make your character stand still and the background stops moving, the 3D effect disappears.
OMG Before I watch this video I just have to say "THANK YOU" I love this impossibly difficult game and I'm surprised anyone else knows about it!
It's worth noting that the complete game comes with 3-D glasses, which would make the visuals even more impressive to say the least.
That music accompanied me during my childhood I got to level 6 once.... just once, now I emulated it and got my sweet revenge jejeje
That's a crazy looking game!
I rented this game 3 times as a kid to beat it. I've always loved a challenge. 5:18 I loved the death scream and Game Over music, it made all the losses a little easier to take, lol.
Whoever gave this SNES game to Mark must be beat with a Game.Com....
Soundtrack is awesome. Remonds me of some cool power metal.
no way theres an advert for this game in one of my old batman comics from the 90's, thats crazy.
omg that has to be the most noxious parallax scrolling backgrounds ever, yet a surprisingly beautiful game. looks more like a modern indie take on pixel art than an actual product of that era. how rare is this one? despite an N power subscription and a huge snes library growing up and numerous b-rate rentals never saw or heard of this ever.
looks pretty awesome to me man
The background scrolling is crazy but it is also very distracting.
My neighbor had this game it was fun played it when I was 10 in 94
THis was an awesome game, I own it for the SNES and STILL play it, I've beaten it twice in my life.
awesome music
I loved Captain Power! I had the ship and you would shoot at the screen and if you got shot boom ejected! It worked like a light gun.
Pretty awesome game actually. I played it on the amiga so i got spared of the 3d effects, the critic should have mentioned it is supposed to be played with special glases btw(may be i missed that part). I think it was an arcade title originally so it is meant to be hard. I thought the gameplay was pretty good, since the control is very accurate and responsive. Music is just awesome. I would recommend it for the Amiga.
In order to make this game playable I think all it would take would be to find the parallax speed variable and crank it down to about 1/3rd what it's currently set at. There may even be a rom hack out there that already does that.

Finding addresses in a game that affect what you want to find can be hard, especially if you're just rummaging through the ROM in a hex editor. I imagine that there are probably tools that could help you find it, however.
when you move right, the platforms and the foreground move left, but the background moves right, and faster than you do. BECAUSE WHO NEEDS LOGIC?!
I´m almost had a epileptic atack in the platform level of this game, so much colors with the 3D effect ROFL
My Eyes!!!!! Still it looks fun after a few joints.
Migraine: the Game Didn't this use some special glasses though (left tinted only or something?). It's on Wiki somewhere...
I got this for Christmas one year, never beat the first level. We used codes to go to the last level, but it was impossible.
Do you remember the cartoon Mask from that era? It had cars that transformed into jets and other awesomeness.
Looks great on a Black and White TV
Whose idea was it to make the background scroll faster than the fore ground? Im going to be sick.
Cmon Mark.this game has the best soundtrack ever. Its so good that I even downloaded the intro song. That intro song smashes 80s all over. I can understand you are disapointed that this is no captain Power but at least give this intro song some recognition, and may be do the same and listen to the music playing airwolf on mame. You will feel the power of the 80s (which is at least concerning... Jajaja) but still awsome.
I own this game, and it came with 3D glasses. You're supposed to wear them for a pop-out 3D effect.
I got this game for Christmas as a kid and legit pulled out my eyebrows in frustration because I couldn't pass the first level!
Had I never watched this I wouldn't have known that you could jump during the top down levels.
That death cry.
I had this game and if you can get past the first level it's not bad
but did you play with the 3D glasses that come packaged with the game?!?! The real experience is right there!
Playing Jim power in my snes emulator right now hehe
A lot of those sprites and art assets look as though they were "borrowed" from Turrican 2 by Factor 5 and Gods by the Bitmap Brothers.
The visual sickness is caused by the uncommon parallax used. It's inverted and the only reason I can think for is that it tries to create an effect of rotation instead of simply moving in a linear direction. Well, it was an experiment... not a very successful at that :P
That music is ripped straight from the lava area in Ys III.
Geez this is just hard to look at! Believe it or not the similar amiga jim power game is almost
This is one of those games that looks amazing but like he said maybe tries to hard... wont know until I play it though ! :-)
Dude I remember this game. It WaS damn near impossible.
That is the most euro-ass game that I ever saw. It is like an Amiga 500 threw up on the Super Nintendo.
Had it as a kid. Don't think I ever beat the first level.
Great looking game here, very interesting, but I do think a game based on the Captain Power TV show would have been a little cooler.
So it's like Contra 3, Space Harrier and R-Type all combined into one game?
On your wii classic controller review, someone named StupidWizardFilms said that you should review the sun. I thought it would be a classic. Do the review sometime
I'd rather chop onions all day than try to watch this again.
Looks like something that would be on Nick Arcade back in the day.
It probably wouldn't be so bad If the background scrolled naturally and not the opposite to what you would expect.the platforming reminds me of amiga euro style platfomer with gems that drop and awkward jumps.
I tried to play this game when I was a kid, well, I failed, it's funny but the visuals never bothered me, and the music is nice, but it's really challenging, even passing level 1 took a while...
Just watching the footage of the game on my phone screen gave me a headache. I can't imagine what would happen if I played it on a TV screen.
my head hurts after watching this video.
The music... it sounds so... Turrican..! Edit: From internet: "The soundtrack was composed by Chris Hülsbeck" Just as I thought :D

The graphics are very Turrican-esque too.
This game was epic for it's gfx, gameplay, music, sound and difficulty...ON THE AMIGA. This fuckfart of a port doesn't do it justice, rly. And don't forget that unlike nowdays, most of the games back then were designed to be difficult to beat. And if you did manage to beat them, you certainly had the right to brag! Idk about you, but for me, this was part of their charm.
Chris Hülsbeck music!
holy shit i hav to get it SD
This game is way too hard, but somehow I love it anyway... I've never gotten past the second platformer stage, but it's a great game anyway! Great graphics, great music, solid design... you just need to memorize EVERYTHING and never mess up. With a password system, like the much easier Turbo CD Jim Power game has, this would have been better... ah well. It's a good game anyway. Insanely difficult, but somehow fun even so. The music definitely helps, Chris Huelsbeck is amazing.
The reverse paralax scrolling is really confusing and will give people headaches for sure
Needs more colours!
they really messed up the background scrolling, it almost looks like you are rotating around a circular core.
The moving background is makes this game look like one of those brain teasers that hurts your freakin eyes...
I'm not, like, a rocket scientist or anything but I don't think that's how perspective works.

Have you tried the Atari ST version? Benzaie said in an old review of his that it's the only version worth playing.
Why does the background scroll the wrong way? LOL
Oh god my head! I seriously could not finish watching the video! Who thought this was OK for release? What the hell were they on? You couldn't pay me to play this game!
Should have put on reverb whenever you said "3D".
What were they thinking when they make this game with reversed parallax scrolling. It really hurts my eyes
Awesome review! Spoiling it for the idiots that ruin comments...first...
Just like the Porygon episode of pokemon that gave Japanese kids seizures, this episode of Classic Game Room is making me twisty eyed and wanting to poke my temples. Dang that parallax scrolling!
Jim Power, 16-bit hero and substitute math teacher.
OMG! How do you parallax?
Why didnt they make a Captain Power video game? It would have been great!
