Facts: in the original arcade version of Galaga, you can earn eight lives. And in the NES/Famicom version of Galaga, you can earn as many lives as you want.

VecTron5 I was so young, It took me a few years to realise there were other games you could play on the VIC 20 . sounds stupid now , but back then most electronic games were one game only .. doh . lucky I cottoned on by the time I got the even mightier Spectrum .. Remember ninja commando ?

Great review! Galaga is one of my all-time favorite kickass video games (I'm not great at it either, but I still love playing it anyway). That there are still 35+ year old original cabinets still working in arcades is a testament to it's greatness. I remember playing it for the first time in 1982 at a arcade in Stillwater Oklahoma. The NES version is almost perfect except the music doesn't sound as rich and the smaller shooting area makes it tough for close shots.

I just met Mark today at Steel City Con. Honestly one of the coolest dudes of all time, we took some pictures and we talked about Vectrex and some of the classic game vendors at the Con. I was dressed as a Bat from Gotham City Impostors and beat him over the head with the butt of my rifle. He looked incredibly happy about it.

i used to own this version. and for the nintendo it is a very (almost perfect) port of the arcade. all the sounds and graphics are there. just the view is zoomed in and the play field feels crammed. my favorite Arcade/Nintendo port is Joust. its more like an 8-bit remake and for some reason plays way better than its arcade counterpart. you should review Joust!

I really enjoy this version. It's not quite coin-op perfect, but it's still very playable and maintains the attack patterns and Challenging Stages from the original game. The biggest differences are the smaller playing area and the music/sound effects, which are decidedly 8-bit and not pulled from the original. It might have been interesting to see some risks taken in this home version, similar to what Konami did with its interpretation of Gyruss for the NES. Even something as minor as new challenging stages would have been welcomed, but I do understand sticking to the script and not breaking what isn't broken.

  • @MaximRecoil

+Peter Skerritt "which are decidedly 8-bit and not pulled from the original." The original is 8-bit too. It used a Z80, which is probably the most famous / widely used 8-bit CPU in history. "Bitness" doesn't actually mean much with regard to video game performance. For example, compare the Nintendo Punch-Out!! arcade hardware (8-bit) to the Atari 2600 hardware (8-bit). Or compare the Neo Geo hardware (16-bit) to the Sega Genesis hardware (16-bit). Better yet, compare current, high-end PC hardware (64-bit) to the Nintendo 64 (64-bit).

Just played that galaga/miss pac man yesterday at a laundry mat. Played miss pac man first and noticed the joystick didn't work very good going to the left, needlessly dieing because of that reason so i didn't even try the galaga, which is a shame because I love galaga. But without working controls whats the point.

I forget which one of the Ridge Racer games on the 360 it was -- 6, maybe? -- but it had Galaga playable during course load and stuff, and I ended up playing more Galaga than Ridge Racer itself. The Championship Edition out on the last gen consoles is pretty boss, too, if WAY easy for the amount of action on the screen at any given time.

VecTron5 Yeah, it was my first Ridge Racer to play, and while it was okay... it failed to enthuse. For my strange Japanese racing games I much prefer the Tokyo Extreme Racer series, thankewverrahmuch. On Dreamcas, toot: Import Tuner Challenge on 360 was just disappointing. If I could pick a retro arcade game to play for a loading screen, it would be Zaxxon, because ZAXXON. Or, perhaps, Rampage. A Rampage-parody loading screen in something like Saints Row would be sweet.
