    Gretzky had the most ergonomically beautiful slap shot I've ever seen. When he would cut to the middle of the ice, 15-20 feet out, and wind up it was almost a sure thing.

    Come on Josh!! Not True! Lemieux and Orr better than Gretzky! In 1980s Gretzky's time NHL 8 goals per game! Ovechkin ERA only 5,3-6 goals per game! If Ovechkin had played high scoring 1980s he would had scored over 1000 goals! Auston Matthews have scored this season 54 goals in 61 games! If Matthews had played In 1982 he would had scored over 100 goals easily beating Gretzky's 92 goal record! In 1980s 90% of the NHL players were from Canada! The Soccer game have 250 milloin players! Gretzky's Canada only 650000 hockey players! That means The Soccer All Stars would beat Gretzky easily 100 game Series 93-7!! Soccer 4 billion fans around the world! Cricket 2 billion fans! Gretzky played only against players from Canada! Gretzky can not be the greatest! Gretzky is Best in Canada only not the whole World!!

    @@jeffreykaufmann2867 - yes, Gretzky entered his prime years much earlier than most players because he started much younger than most players. He was already skating at age 2, and was playing against 10 year olds at age 6. By the time he was 10, he was playing against 14 year olds and scoring 378 goals in one season. By the time he was 14, he was playing with and against 16 and 17 year olds. By the time he was 17, he was already in pro hockey in the WHA with a million dollar contract. This is also why his peak finished earlier than most players. He was already exiting his peak by age 27/28, because he had played so much more hockey than any other player his age. If you include all the tournaments, 5 Canada Cup finals, 6 Stanley Cup finals, by the time he was in his 14th season (his last Cup finals in 1993), he had really played the equivalent of 18 seasons. It’s amazing he still had another scoring title in him in 1994. This is why his goal scoring dried up so quickly after 1994. People say Mario had much better longevity as a goal scorer, but they fail to see that Gretzky had already played 18 seasons worth of games by 1993. Mario was able to rest half of his career and only played in 915 games and far fewer Canada Cup and Stanley Cup games. Basically he sat out half of the number of games Wayne played, and people expected Wayne to keep scoring goals at the same rate. People are silly.

  • @jeffreykaufmann2867

    @jeffreykaufmann2867

    @@michaelgriffiths8068 You made some excellent points. What's remarkable about Gretzky's 212 point season was that he was the only Oiler among the Top 10 in scoring. Anderson was the only Oiler who had a 100+ point season with 104 points. Kurri only had 32 goals so for all those Gretzky Haters who say Gretzky got all those assists because of Kurri don't know what they are talking about. How many Art Ross winners don't have at least one teammate in the top 10? It's extremely rare. When Esposito scored 152 points the top 4 scorers were from the Bruins and 6 in the top 10. Esposito was on a better team( 121 points) than Gretzky in 81-82 (111 points). Gretzky was in on 51% of the 417 goals that Edmonton Scored. Esposito 38%. If you look at the 1985-86 season when Gretzky scored 215 points his four star teammates scored 455 points. In 81-82 only 368 points. While his teammates were improving yearly as players Gretzky's point totals were virtually the same. The 81-82 season is way more impressive cause his teammates were not nearly as good as in 85-86. Kurri scored 68 goals in 85-86 yet Gretzky got only three more points than 81-82.

    He's the all time leader in shorthanded goals and points. If you were a coach, would you continuously put someone on to kill penalties that can't play defense in their own zone? In the year Orr had 139 points, the top four Bruins had 152, 139, 116 and 105 points. They were the top four scorers in the league. In Wayne's second season he had 164 points (new record) and 109 assists (new record) and the next four highest scoring Oilers had 75, 63, 60 and 53 points. Kurri's 75 points were good for 35th in league scoring.

    This game to me epitomizes the hand over and development of the NHL from the 70’s into the 80’s. The Flyers are the 70’s gritty style, that in their hey day worked, heck; incredibly well. But they are a step behind, the Oilers cross passing and switching left to right ice domination, especially in the neutral zone is something of beauty. The speed of the international game and the influx of so much Scandinavian talent also helped progress the elements of finesse and creativity that was unheard of or seen in the 70’s. God I love this game!! Edit: And to think that this is 4 years before Tikkanen....

Both are above 3.00, Now a days, above three is usually a back up if even that?! Just shows you how different the league was back then..especially with goal scoring..I mean it’s all perspective. I love hockey back during this time! Not uncommon to see lots of 7-6 or 8-5 or even 9- 6 games! with a lot of new younger very skilled players in the league, I feel like scoring is going to keep on going up! Hopefully that leads to Ovie breaking Gretzky record for most goals in a career! I read something a few years ago what Ovi’s totals would look like if he played back then..It’s insane with what the projections said! I think I read something like… I want to say three years ago, & his goal projections were over 900 goals already! Now of course anything could of happened back then,injured more(way more fights & heavy hitting) & or didn’t work with a lot of skilled players, etc. etc. Anyway, I just love hockey from back then!
