Classic ESTATE CARS, station wagons, shooting brakes & woodies Vol 2.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

190 classic estates & station wagons make it into this OCC upload, the second instalment in this series solely looking at the older estate car and related vehicles.
There are some fantastic rarities in this compilation, my thanks to everyone who sent over suitable snapshots, it really was a lot of fun putting this collection of shooting brakes etc together for the Old Classic Car channel.
The Morris Marshal in the thumbnail belongs to Michael Wells in Australia so thanks to Michael for sending over this and other photos of his cars, same to Nev as well and everyone that has contributed to these uploads.
Classic estates that have graced our own driveway over the years include several examples of the 124-series Mercedes E-class from the 1980s and 1990s, a now-rare Standard Companion (based on the 10 saloon), Morris Travellers, BMW E34 Touring, plus the derelict remains of an Austin A40 Countryman of the early 1950s that I donated to mate with a similar A40 van.
In this collection of classic estate cars you'll also find example(s) of the following ...
Ford 100E Escort
Volvo Amazon estate
Hillman Avenger
"Derby" era Bentley woodie from the 1930s
Humber Hawk estate

I love the classic moggie travellers. Not to everyone's taste are what I call the eyelids over the headlights, but I think they're cute. My idea of a station wagon, is the absolutely enormous ford country squire. There are a couple local to me,and in very good condition for their age. The first estate I ever went in, was my uncles bright red MK1 cortina. I used to sit in the boot with a rather large old English sheepdog xx

Thanks again Richard for featuring estates. I owned a 1978 Chevrolet Malibu Classic Estate with sticky paper sides and a 1984 Plymouth Voyager minivan without the fake wood. The Malibu wagon would be worth something here in the US with its optional 305 c.i. V8 in good condition, but those early minivans have all but disappeared. The Mitsubishi 2.6 litre four banger got very used up and was expensive to do repairs upon. I would love that Humber Super Snipe Estate from 1960 though!

Thank you, Rick, for another splendid compilation. Estate cars, station wagons, shooting brakes, ‘woodies’, etc have always appealed to me, so your pics ticked all those boxes! At 3:22 is 1937 (Derby) Bentley 4¼-Litre, chassis B142JD. Originally an all-weather tourer by Vanden Plas, it was first owned by Frederick Huggins. In 1950 it was converted to an estate car, as seen here, by Vincent of Reading.

That was a huge line up Rick. My Dad had a Mk 3 Zodiac Farnham Estate which my sister and I both learned to drive in. After a Mk 4 Saloon, he managed to find an Estate version - HUGE - White, exactly like the one in this video. My Mum used to love being 'wafted' around in big Fords. I really did love the Austin Westminster Estate at the beginning, and like you, am very fond of Standard Vanguard Estates too. Thanks for this video - many memories stirred yet again, of my distant childhood . Take care and bring on the PILOT ! 🙂

The Citroen DS Safari along with the CX and BX are well designed, the Peugeot 505 is another lovely Pininfarina collaboration. The green Humber is impressive. I do like wagons for their practicality but some makers offerings look a bit like a half hearted add-on. 👍

Our family had the Borgward! 1.5ltr Isabella Station wagon in Cyprus around 1964. It was White over Yellow and being Cypriot registered had the number AC377. Right hand drive. Huge cargo space in the rear. For what I remember it was a very comfortable car.

15:25 IIRC, the Coronation Rally was the previous name of the East African Safari prior to the mid-60s. In those days many of the entrants were privateers, long before the manufacturer teams spoilt the local nature of the event. This looks like the start of the rally as very few cars remained clean for long. The registration KGD835 is very similar to that on my father's 1960 A55 Countryman which he bought in Nairobi and, several years later, shipped to Italy and drove to the UK.

I'm surprised you never used the word shooting brake, referring to the Bentley and Riley woodys. The gentry would use a shooting brake to go off on their shooting trips on their private estates. As a kid in the 60s my grandparents lived near Abbotts of Farnham in the village of Wrecclesham, I remember seeing the Ford saloons arriving to be converted into estates. My neighbour deals in VW campervans, but he also likes barn finds, this month he has rescued a 1962 Austin A35 Countryman estate, and an extremely rare 1964 MK1 Cortina estate with the fake wooden sides. Great video 👍 well I am an estate car guy 😊

An excellent selection of photos, as you pointed out, the exotic shapes of windshields and panels demonstrates great thought as much as aesthetic originality. Wonderful to see the two Austin’s in New Zealand. While the FIAT 500 Jardinaire has a rear mounted engine, I wonder how/where it would sit in front of the rear hatch? Well done for another wonderful piece 👍👏👌

222AUN would in fact have had to pay purchase tax to be able to fit rear windows. No tax dodge allowed when converting a van to an estate car. It did mean though that you would no longer be limited on speed to 40mph as were vans.

The rear fog light on the Tercel wagon at 16:30 is remarkably tacked-on looking and barely to the right of the centerline. You can see the blanking panel where it's supposed to go, to the left of the reverse light. Japan and US-spec ones used a completely different "ATM" with a taller and narrower license plate recess, dedicated handle slot and no provision for a rear foglight.

It's a shame about the Vauxhall Victor FE, if legend s to be believed. Like unlikely bedfellows Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce, Packard et al., Vauxhall had a very distinctive styling feature inherited through the generations of its cars, the fluting up the sides of the bonnet from the radiator. This was lost when, following industrial relations troubles in the 1970s, the firm became a mere badge variant of the much less troublesome Opel. The Cavalier Mk1's bonnet also had flutes despite it being a shared design, but after the FE there were no more mainstream Vauxhall-exclusive cars, as far as I know.

At 7.06 that Chevy wagon is not a real Michigan State Police car. MSP were a very specific copyrighted color of blue. That light bar on the roof is a Federal Mogal brand Street Hawk and MSP uses a large dual red round sealed beam rotator on the roof. Also, MSP vehicles have a clear plastic sign in the middle of the hood from front to back that says "state STOP police" I'm just sayin.

I have never been a fan of Estate cars I find many of them just plain ugly and look like saloons with a box shaped feature stuck on as an after thought. However, saying that there are exceptions for example I have always rated highly the Volvo V70R . I recall many of them as police cars whistling, they did make a whistling sound, down the motorway at a fantastic rate of knots. Great collection of photos.
