It's easy to find a great fragrance for $100, but I love finding great classics for $10! I'm actually a fan of the Hai Karate scent. It has bite to it that is a little like burned rubber, reminding me of my paternal ancestors that smelled of gasoline and gun oil.

@@davidGPS95 I don't know. I don't think that it is for sale here in North America anymore, although I have heard that it's still available in the UK, probably why it got a review here on this channel. However, Phoenix Artisans Accoutrements in the USA makes a Hai Karate Homage called "Lo Haiku". I love it!
The first man I ever fell in love with wore Brut. To this day, I will still stop and smell this while out shopping. Great video.
My dad (who made it all the way to 94) was an Old Spice man, and I had the great good fortune to marry a lady from Seaton Delaval in Northumberland, where Old Spice was made at Shulton's. We built up quite a supply of the After Shave (my father would never have worn 'cologne'!) and shaving soap from the factory shop. He didn't go a whole lot on surfing, or Blue Stratos, buy we did have a brief 'Hai Karate' period, followed by 'Brut 33' (with 33% LESS fragrance, I understand!), before returning to Old Spice. Well played, sir. My only observation - the missed opportunity to show the Henry Cooper/Kevin Keegan Brut commercial! PS - love the horse.
I was thrown off when I saw something moving behind you. There’s a hecking horse! You film in the most beautiful locations. Well done Ash.
I still use Old Spice and Tabac. I love Jovan Musk and so do the ladies😁. I must get some more.

Tabac is good
Love it! We share the same childhood memories about our father’s cologne!
I used to use old spice in the 70s. Dad used brute and English leather. They always bring back nice memories of Dad. In the 1980s I switched to Abercrombie & Fitch Woods. After they stopped making it I switched to clubman. Now I use Drakkar. It reminds of A&F woods. Cheers Ron.
I wear Old Spice on a regular basis and have done for many years - both the aftershave and the EDT. The biggest issue I have with it now is it simply does not last. I tend to over-apply but even then it won't last through the day. Definitely one that needs re-application within a few hours. Glad to see Hai Karate is back on the market though as my father was certainly a fan

You should check out the copy Phoenix Shaving Co. makes. Supposed to be really accurate to the original formula by Shulton and lasts a long time (EDP I believe). It's called Cold Spices
Old spice aftershave has definitely been reformulated. I remember it from the early 80’ies where I found it very exotic. I now use Alvarez Gomez Agua de Colonia as aftershave. It’s fresh citrus and gives a lovely feeling after shaving. It’s short lived but very cheap.

Yeah it’s nowhere near as strong as it used to be and it’s gone in 30 minutes. Same as brut. They used to be strong and last a good 4-5 hours so they did
Wow, you chose the brazilian version of the Old Spice add. I never imagined seeing a reference to my home here on my favorite channel. Thanks, Chap!
I only tried blue stratos a couple of years ago and it was a really pleasant surprise. This is a great cheapy for casual stuff or to just wear at home. A pleasant fresh spicy marine scent
Love the horse doing casual horse things in the background.
I feel like lynx Africa could have had an honourable mention here. it's been around for almost 30 years and is *everywhere*. very cheap, nice smelling and inoffensive. definitely the masterpiece from lynx that has stood the test of time and is still popular. worn by 14 year old boys at the school disco in the 90s and now their sons today.

Great idea! Love these.
Old Spice is a great alternative once in a while. Thank you for the video!
Excellent video. I had a nostalgic moment seeing the Old Spice ad. Since I used to see it on the TV as a young man in the 70's. Those good old days.

Excellent review, Ash! Thanks for showing the commercials too - I remember them well; it was refreshing to watch them again; straight to the point - men's fragrance to attract a woman, that's it. -- I had Hai Karate as it went with my martial arts fascination when I was younger. My dad had Old Spice, and I think my older brothers had Mandate.
An excellent review of these often overlooked fragrances. Some have that nostalgia linked to them - using your Dads as a kid! Denim and Jovan Musk are still out there - I still enjoy the scent of these!

Never got into Brut. That looked like Joe Namath in that commercial. Played quarterback in the sixties and seventies.
Nice review of some of the classics of our youth in the 70's and 80's. I still use Old Spice for a daily aftershave and shaving soaps with a similar scent profiles. Avon Tai Winds was a close and better scent of the Hai Karate aftershave. Brut is one that I still use on occasion when the wife isn't around .... she doesn't like it. Statos and Mandate are two that I'm not familiar with and haven't seen on the market here in my area. Have a great day and weekend Ash
I remember buying Hi Karate for my father for Christmas circa 1977 from Toms a chain of shops long long gone.
Thank you as you helped me remeber if I prefer old spice or brut and what they smell like. Very good descriptions as I felt like the smells came back to my nostril memory lol x
Thanks you sir, as always a pleasure to watch your video.
I have a couple of those Colognes in my collection. Great video as always
Hai Karate still my all time favorite, Brut and Stratos follow up. Great video.💯😃👍
The Brut commercial was starring Joe Namath, if memory serves. He was the Quarterback of the New York Jets in the NFL at the time.
Note: the new, reformulated Brut aftershave just came out in the U.S., post-oak moss era. Pleasantly surprised! Gave it a "hard mint" edge, with aloe vera and surprisingly good longevity! Good vid!
Mandate was my favourite, i loved it, and wore it a lot in my youth.
I must send you some Aqua Velva for your review of cheap aftershave. And you are killing it in that ensemble!
Thank you Ash for your reply to my query concerning Pino Silvestre. I wasn't sure either. It's a fragrance to me that has dated.
Old Spice, Brut doesn't smell as good as it did in the 70s and 80s , but i still buy them, i recently purchased Tabac and its amazing.👍
Classics are timeless ! And mandate is a great fragrance by all means! Cheerio
Hey Ash. I myself use Pinaud Clubman and Jeris. I also like Old Spice , Brut, English Leather , and British Sterling. My two favorites are Aramis and Hugo Boss. Number One.
My father grew up in the Philippines and said that boys either wore Brut cologne or Jovan Musk. We’re in America now and since I was a child, he’d always use Aqua Velva Classic Ice Blue in the glass bottles (again, like many other men I’d use some of his after shave). I’m currently exploring the old “cheapies” and picked myself up some Old Spice (which my grandfather used, per the slogan) and am planning to try Brut eventually. Like yourself, the history and lineage of some of these classics makes them all the more appealing
Mandate was one of my first aftershaves in the 80s still like it today
My favorite is Drakkar it smells so good

@@TheChapsGuide quick question do you know a website in Great Britain that ships to the USA where I can try mandate you made it sound so appealing?
Mennen Millionaire has ways been my favorite!
I was given a bottle of Old Spice recently. It certainly brought back memories of distant youth when it was heavily advertised. Hai Karate also a blast from the past. The original series of TV commercials for Hai Karate featured the wonderful Valerie Leon, former Bond Girl and Carry On films favourite.
Splash it all over 😜Henry cooper style, Denim would fit this list 👍
My grandfather used Stetson splash-on after shave and Aramis spray fragrance. To this day I love smelling those. It brings me back to my grandparent's house as a child, which brings me comfort.
I have some nice fragrances, Tom Ford & Floris being my all time favourites, but as a every day splash, I love Old Spice & Brute. The bottles are ingrained in the brain due to them being the aftershave of choice not only my Dad but my Grandad. Mandate is defo on the radar now after this indorsment.
Good stuff . lovely horse .
Floïd is another good one 🧡
Good reviews!
Hai Karate smelled like fly killer to me. I remember worrying about the man in the advert’s sanity. I thought a man would have to be insane to want to fight off a whole lotta gorgeous woman like the one in the ad 😂.

Great video
Good evenig, Sir. After seeing this video, I blind bought Mandate...and was totally satisfied! Excellent fragrance, both in terms of smell and longevity. Also my colleagues liked it, as it smelled clean and soapy. I also bought Rapport, which is produced by the same brand. Another excellent fragrance. I suggest you try it. Thanks for your precious advice.
Sergio Tacchini eau de toilette (1987) is my recent pick up. Brilliant fragrance with classic scent profile. Still relevant today for those who want to stand out. Bottom rock prcies as well. Picked it up for CAD $20 for 100ml.
ill go test this mandate in a few days and see if its better than brut, i doubt it honestly but would be awesome
There is a Unicorn behind you.
Old Spice is good as after shave. I don't like Brut. And Blue Stratos here is quite expensive. At the end of the day everything lays in the Nose of the Beholder. What is really funny is the voice of the commentors in the old ads deep voice trying so hard to sound sensual.
The horse is a nice touch.

Nice cameo appearance by your horse!
🙂 when im feeling nostalgic about my parents I wear brut, but for me personally i prefer the various Old Spice flavors tho it costs a bit more than brut here in Chicago. Im not familiar with those other bottles but that blue bottle i imagine resembles something I have from Nautica or my bottle of Davidoff Cool Water, both are in a blue bottle too
In fairness, all of these fragrances have been reformulated and are more homages to the originals than faithful recreations. No longer being a spring chicken, I tend to favor simpler scents. My favorite for Summer at the moment is Epsilon Blue. I read that it is very similar to the now retired Floyd Blue. It is an aquatic with a slight powdery aspect. I like aquatics and citrus, but they are not long lived by nature.
i remember an aftershave called Insignia from back in the days
I'm a fragrance enthusiast, like yourself, and have well over 50 fragrances. Sometimes these cheapy classics hit the spot when I want to go back to my younger days, when I was discovering fragrances. Never smelled Mandate though.
Mandate ill have to remember that one, haha i remember caking the Brut colone on alot back in my late primary school and early high school days😂🥴👌
Lilac Vegetal. I don’t know if you can get it anymore. It got me through university since it was almost as cheap as tap water.
Aqua Velva is a good one
Clubman is a fantastic aftershave scent Try Canoe also! Ooh la la!
'Brut De Fabergé' mérite vraiment un 5/5.
I like Bruit a lot better than Old Spice. It is a clean barber shop smell. Old Spice to me like a spoiled spice cabinet.
Tabac is also a comparatively cheap good aftershave but I think the best value is Quorum excellent value and performance similar to Polo Ralph Lauren Green and at about 10 GPB compared to about 60 GBP for the Polo it’s great value ..

It would be amazing if you could review some fragrances from Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements. I have to agree about Brut. Any time anyone under 50 wears Brut it smells like they raided their dead father's collection
Enjoyed the video very much. Thank you. Does anyone know if Blue Stratos is available, and is so where one can buy some?
Gotas Frescas is an amazing Spanish citrus cologne about £5 for 250months it's like a bargain Eau Savage
Brut is simply the best men scent ever. I whish they would made a parfume put of it.
It's curious, in my opinion Old Spice feels the most dated fragrance when compared to Brut. I have to try the other ones. Another fragrance of this kind that I think deserves to be mentioned is Denim Original!
It seems Mandate and Karate appeal to the equine demographic. Ash, you might try smelling coffee beans between each fragrance. That is supposed to reset the nasal receptors. Not sure how true that is.
Hello Ash. Another very interesting video. I would like to know you whether you will be reviewing the Italian cologne/aftershave make Pino Silvestre. Is it to old to use these day's?

I purchased a bottle of Pino last year and hated it. Gave it almost immediately to my father, so sadly my vote hs already been cast.
Intriguing!^^ May entry was... wait for it, it gets really lame... 4711... yes... *the* Eau de Cologne, of course via my dad. Never knew "Stratos" but it sounds to feel very "light" - I prefer my light fragrances to be built around a Bergamot note. "Brut" - I somehow feel that it should be pronounced French, but don't ask me why.. - doesn't sound great, I have to concur, though I never smelled it. "Mandate" is something I knew from my father, though I was never inclined to get it, and of course, like so many men fragrances, I inherited it from my father at 16 when he died... still, I always felt this was an overly flowery, heavy scent.. which is supremely Ironic because I just recently started wearing "Quorum" which is not all that different in some ways... "Hai Karate" - this sounds like something I could wear and feel a bit ironic all the time, citrus is always nice, though I still prefer a dominant Bergamot note ;). Oh and of course I know "Old Spice" but never really liked it, probably because it's tied up with me getting in a puberty based fight with my dad ;). I suppose I could get a bottle of "Mandate"... I normally use either "Aramis" or more recently "Quorum" on normal days, in Winter occasionally the (much hated by my fiancée though) ultra classic 4711 because I feel it would be lost all to quickly in summer what with it's very light fragrance and even lighter staying time. I conclude: I took a potential new fragrance to check out from this presentation and therefore am very happy to thank you for the effort - apparently I tend to the retro fragrances anyway, what with "Quorum" being locked firmly in then 80s and "Aramis" is not exactly a spring chicken any-more as well and 4711, well... retro is *way* to new for *that* one ;). Best regards Raoul G. Kunz
I bought some Blue Stratos a while back simply because of the price, and I absolutely hated it lol. Smelt like toilet cleaner to me and I quickly passed it off to a friend.

Wow, I didn't think Mandate would show up here. A great fragrance that I also own. In a German perfume community I'm in, only 25 people have Mandate in their collection. Apparently it's not very well known here, even though this is a great and affordable fragrance. The fragrance reminds me of Paco Rabanne pour Homme. Do you know Lomani pour Homme? The scent is similar to Drakkar Noir, but I like it better. You pay about 10 € for 100 ml. And what about Al Rehab? This is an Arabic manufacturer with some great powerful cheap fragrances. Here I can recommend Lord. Less than ten euros for 50 ml. The fragrance has similarities with Lapidus pour Homme, but I like it even better. Dakar by Al Rehab is also very good, as you can tell from the name, it goes in the direction of Drakkar. And if you have the chance, please try Arcipelago Uomo by Acqua dell'Elba. A rather unknown fragrance. I don't know anything comparable, although I have tested several hundred fragrances. I've heard Kiton Napoli has similarities, if you know the fragrance, but I can't judge since I don't know it. An incredibly pleasant fresh fragrance.
I guess Mandate had no mandate in Canada. I don't remember that one at all. Instead, to fill out the panel of 5, we would have had Aqua Velva in the mix. I'll never forget the 1980 MAD magazine spoofs on all of these cheap aftershaves. Personally I was a Blue Stratos boy. My grandfather had Old Spice and Old Spice Lime in his kit when he passed away, and my dad was also firmly in the Old Spice camp. My bottle of BRUT ended up in my junk box, and now that smell just reminds me of old junk.
if you are going for true fragrance style of smelling no rubbing ruins they layers in case there are layering like top notes middle notes ect blue stratos on my skin not good
Can you review carthusia after shave⁉️
I don’t remember Mandate or w Stratos at all - perhaps they had no presence in the USA. I like Brut EDT a whole lot; I like aftershaves with a whole lot less fragrance in general, just some “skin food” type ingredients.
