Classic case of overwatering DIY how to fix repair lawn fungus Melting Out, leaf spot, red thread.
On this week of what's wrong with my lawn we examine a case where the lawn stopped growing. The lawn was green but had a hazy brown copper top. Join me this week as we go through the lawn on What's wrong with my lawn.
Most lawns are dealing with multiple issues. You'll find in this episode we are dealing with some areas of lack of water. Most of the areas have severe excess watering that has caused the melting out, leaf spot, and red thread fungus.
By performing a thatch test we found that there was not an excess of thatch or dead grass traveling throughout the lawn. We verified the watering problems using a soil probe.
The repair is as follows:
1. temporarily dehydrate the lawn by not watering for 5 to 10 days. We do not want the lawn to brown out. We want the lawn to stress out a bit to manage the fungus.
2. adjust the sprinklers and make sure they are spraying evenly.
3. re-introduce the water. You may need to water 2 inches per day until you get the water back into the soil 6" to 8" deep.
4. Apply a combination of an 16% higher ammonium nitrogen (summer use) or revive granular at 4% (early spring / late fall use) with a bio stimulant or soil conditioner
5. Let the lawn grow out to 4" to 6" tall
6. mow the top 2" to 3" off. This removes the fungal layer to prevent it from spreading.

    I’m in Australia and I think your videos are great. Every one so far has a white picket fence, and I am just starting to think that maybe they are different houses. First one I’ve seen that has any patchiness in it. It’s nice to see someone who can actually present a lawn that is clearly imperfect to be honest on KZread most of them seem to be showing off a great lawn and then complaining about something that can’t be seen in the video. Great camera work too.

    That was informative , I just subbed to your channel .I live in Ga. We have had high temps and humidity , and a lot of rain and storms , at times 6 to 7 days in a row . I reseeded parts of my lawn where I had septic tank and line repairs , my soil is very much red clay , I spread some top soil when I seeded in the end of October 2017 , fertilized with triple 10 every 6 weeks as the instructions , the grass was beautiful until about 6 weeks ago then the brown out started , now its almost gone , the ground looks black , its in a shady area and not much sun , I guess I will do it again in October , my yards large and no irrigation , in the past with fescue turfs it takes about 5 years to get somewhat of a healthy lawn here .

    Thanks for telling me this. The areas that are dying almost sound like pythium blight that's traveling through the lawn. This happens due to humidity and too much water. It spreads very fast and completes its life cycle within 30 days. For the red clay humates are going to be your friend. I would put down a humic granular every other month during the growing season. As for rebuilding the shady areas I would consult a local nursery or seed distribution company and find a perennial rye grass or rhizomatous tall fescue.

    A sharpening of the mower blade will help because the end of blades are hurting it looks like, tuff to tell in video but this can help aid in fungus but same with poor watering habits. Water once a week and put down .5 to 1 inch of water newbies

  • @chosen1one930

    @chosen1one930

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@robertjohnston25 yes its accurate. I have a degree in turf management and have 15 years on course experience and counting. Improper cutting can hurt your lawn from growth to disease. Some grasses are more prone to this but its best to sharpen once a month during mowing seasons, twice a month for zoysia. We sharpen waalk behind greensmowers twice a week, we have 12 greensmaster flex mowers we swiitch them out so we never have to worry about mowers not being ready every morning.

    great feedback. the biggest issue is evaporation rates. .5" to 1" of water may work for many areas. mine however is not one. with temps getting to 105 degrees and evaporation rates being greater than 1" per week its not a sustainable model for the long term during the summer months.

    Fantastic video! Would give this three thumbs up if I could. When you do the soil probe, ideally what should you see? How wet should it look? How deep should you see water? Would a lawn fungicide be helpful? Thanks again. Wish I could work with you for a few days, I would learn a lot.

  • @pestandlawnginja

    @pestandlawnginja

    4 жыл бұрын

    I like to see the soil probe go down and stop about 6" to 8". Then i examine the plug and see if it's got too much or too little water in it. I haven't found that fungicides work for leaf spot or melting out. I find the best thing you can do is slightly dehydrate the lawn then force some growth. it works very well.

    Great video. Thinking this is our issue but not 100% sure. Newly seeded lawn is only 8 weeks old this Friday. Some parts I’ve already had to lightly mow cause it’s growing so fast it’s starting to block our underground sprinklers. Other parts aren’t coming up as much and are starting to turn yellow and the ground is still wet. We were still watering daily before getting hammered with lots of rain the last couple of weeks.

    Very informative video!! Recently I bought a house and I'm very new to lawn care. I haven't gotten a soil test yet. Brown/grey area gradually went out of control on both front and back of my house :( the soil on the lawn is compacted especially on the backyard since I walk around on it a lot to water flower garden and pots. Some areas are just so dried up and grasses are dead. I thought this was only from walking on the grass and heat stress..so I watered 2-3 times a week this month. Recently I applied low amount of organic granular fertilizer and humic/fulvic acid. I feel like I'm messing this up so much. it just look like poop :-S so much thatches/debris stuck in there. I looked at some grass blades and I did see yellow patches on them (melting?). I found a few mushrooms growing in the backyard. From your video, it looks like I also have fungi problem (X_x).. I watched your video ("Can you Dethatch or Power Rake when it's hot outside?") you posted 2 days ago. today is finally cloudy outside, so I'm going to try to dethatch with a rake (I don't have a machine). lots to learn :) !! thank you for your great videos!
