Along with a normal flashlight, I like to bring a hand held UV/black light. Oil glows green under UV light. It can be a little hard to see in the day light but if you're in a garage you'll see oil or remnants of oil that you can't see with your naked eye. We live in the internet age, so it's not hard to do a little research before you go look at a bike. If you have time. I didn't know much when I bought my first vintage bike (about 5 years ago) but I got lucky. I got a good 74 Honda CB750.
