Yeah, the 2010 remake isn't bad, but wow did they ever completely screw up the Medusa portion of the film. In the original, Medusa is horrifying and scary and the scene is tense. In the remake, she doesn't even look as scary as most of her forms from the Castlevania series.

Yeah, and the Harryhausen version is accurate to Greek Mythology as Medusa was originally a beautiful woman until Minerva punished her by turning her into a hideous Gorgon after falling in love with Poseidon, and while I understand this is stop motion, her movement is practical as her snake-like body is heavier than her 'human' body, as in the real-world, large snakes, like anacondas, are slow.

1981 is a classic adventure movie with some incredible stop motion effects and is overall more well made. The monsters on the 81 version genuinely scared me as a kid. 2010 is a popcorn movie that's not exactly groundbreaking in any way, but still entertaining nonetheless. It has that "cool, but cheesy action flick" sort of vibe that you just feel like watching every now and again. 1981 is obviously the better movie, but 2010 is decent too. Both can be enjoyed for their own reasons. Depends on what you feel like watching; a timeless classic, or a cheesy blockbuster?

A lot of it is in the acting of the people playing Perseus. In the original, he plays it like he's shitting himself, which is what it should be. In the newer version, he kills her like an invincible action hero. Completely ruins the tension. The newer one looks like a bunch of scenes created to look good in a trailer rather than actually make a good film.

I'd argue that it already has happened. Even when I first watched the original on DVD back in 2010 as a youngster, I found it more memorable than the 2010 version (I always felt the original had a more Greek-mythology feel with its methodical, whimsical, nightmarish, and epic feel whereas the remake was a glossy, brooding, and generic action movie).

Having seen both when they were in theaters, I found the 1981 Medusa scene much more memorable than its counterpart. I knew the original mythology, even as a kid.....but I gave credit to how they changed her and portrayed her actions. Medusa was shown as a true monster....not a some girl abusing the power she had. A true monster is grim, cold and calculating......not emotional and irrational. It matches the reptilian body they gave her. "You see, Miss 2010 Medusa.....just because you ARE a character, does not mean that you HAVE character." So that is the main reason I like the 1981 version. The most frightening creature in all of greek mythology is portrayed adequately enough, if somewhat inaccurately. Would have preferred the scales, brazen wings, brazen claws.......and the TWO sisters just like her. Yes, they fly. Gorgons....plural.

Exactly. The original had a sense of magic and wonder that the sequel lacked. In addition, sometimes the remake forgets that action, while it has its place, isn't always a good substitute for character development, storytelling, and drama. The Medusa scene is a good example; the new one is certainly more lively and has great effects, but it lacks the tenseness of the original, the feeling of dread and helplessness being forced to fight an immensely powerful and deadly opponent essentially blind. Despite her speed, I never felt the new version of Medusa was anywhere near as dangerous or terrifying as the original.

This is what happens when too much CGI completely overwhelmed the storyline. The most obvious example is Perseus vs Medusa. Medusa is supposed to be a hideous monster and a quick glance will be fatal. The 1981 version captured the description accurately. In addition, you can see how terrified Perseus in preparing for the kill when he pulled out his sword. The remake was just showing unnecessary rage and too much action.

My Pros and Cons of both Versions of this Classic ! >> The Medusa of the 1981 version was Way more scarier compared to the 2010 version. That was hands down obvious. >> One Additional scene which was on the 1981 version not shown in this video was the Curse of Athena statue's head. THAT was so awesome as well. Hades curse in the 2010's version was not as commanding as the one in the 1981 Athena Statue Heads version. >> The scorpion attacks are better in the 2010 version tho compared to the stop motion of the 1980's version. I loved the 2010's Scorpions. That was done right. >> in the 2010's version Introducing a new character, which looked like GROOT's Mage cousin, that was good. Mads Mikkelsen's character here was also good. >> The Gods actors in the 2010 actually had too low focus. For instance you have the likes of Liam Neeson as Zeus and Hades. But there was also Luke Evan's character as Apollo which was TRULY super under utilized. Wished HE would've been there in the sequels. >> The Gold Robotic OWL in the 1981 was cute and adorable character. Again was under utilized in the 2010's version was just made a cameo appearance as a tribute homage. >> The Charron (Death Incarnate looking Boatman) from the 1981 version looks so menacing and desolate compared to the 2010 version, that looked like it came out straight from the Pirates of The Caribbean movies. >> But I have to admit, the KRAKEN from the 2010's version WAS a lot more better compared to the choppy stop motion 1981's version. And off course that LEGENDARY line by Liam Neeson ZEUS - RELEASE THE KRAKEN... now that WAS awesome actually ! >> Overall : The 1981's version was made for a more classic ala Ten Commandments style of filming. It did have that Classic Greeco / Roman style to it. However, in the 2010's version was Highly modernized and made to look like its a made for PC RPG game though. Acting was mostly Dry, on BOTH versions of the films. Sam Worthington is a good actor, just SURE wished to see MORE sides and appear more 3 Dimensional in his character rather than the Stoic, vengeful, quiet type. >> And there is a VERY big difference in the story. The original 1981 version was Following the Legendary Greek storyline which is based on the Star Constellation of Perseus and Andromeda. In the 2010's version, Andromeda was reduced into JUST a Maid in peril. They DID not dwell much on the romantic interest. In fact in this Version Perseus DID NOT have a GREAT need to save Andromeda in the first place ! which sucks big time at least.

  • @MysteryManfrom79

The 1981 Clash of the Titans is underrated - it was less campy and more conservatively played, and more Shakespearean looking than the earlier films from the 50s, 60s and 70s, and it dos a fine job of exploring the themes of Greek Mythology (especially the fickle and trivial nature of the Gods and the way they play with the mortals like toys!) which many will recognise if they've read Classical Literature. The music score is amazing too, and gives the film a classic feel. I think where this film has an edge over earlier Harryhausen films is it is very story driven - I felt with some of the earlier films that the story was just filler to get onto the next monster, and that the actors were playing second fiddle to the effects. I felt with Clash of the Titans the opposite, that the monsters were there to bring to life all the things we were hearing about throughout the film, and they blended in much better to the story instead of being there just because. I think where the original doesn't hold up so well in places is some of the background acting, the extras seem incredibly static at times and a little restrained in their reaction to things. A few of the performances from fine actors like Tim Piggot-Smith are a little restrained at times also, but these are only minor nitpicks.

I like both but i Can see why the original is superior in very visual aspects I think the strong point of the new one is the beast designs While different you can’t deny they have their own charm, with Medusa and the kraken being the biggest changes The original for the most part tried to be more simple and straight forward while the remake more detailed, this doesn’t work in some cases but some creative visuals like this one 1:55 show the movie got too much hate The effects mostly aged amazingly with the flying scenes being the only ones being a bit rough around the edges But back to the monster designs, I like both kraken and Medusa designs since both show two separated ideas, original being more similar to how Greek portrayed their monsters visually while the new tried to appeal more to their modern portrayals Kraken being a octopus like creature while Medusa seems to take more from her “cursed version” while the old one seems inspired by her “born has a monster” version and I personally like both The slow motion isn’t great and doesn’t help at all most of the scenes it’s used But the most notable differences I noticed is how focused, grey and crowded the remake feels like in 0:54 3:43 and 1:02 This scenes feel too charged with details and doesn’t let us analyze well what’s happening, seeing them walk out of the boat in the mist with a almost monochrome scene is better at taking the audiences attention The remake isn’t the worse but sometimes less is more and that’s something the remake should have known, the only part I can say it worked was with Medusa with how she showed more emotions and expressions which fit the “cursed” version they were using of her

As a kid, whatever scares you will always be memorable to you up till the day you died. One good example is the medusa in 1981 version. One look at her eyes and you will be forever stoned by her beauty, as though she has cast a spell on you.

In terms of casting, Sam Worthington's Perseus could've been played by any of the dozens of good looking actors in Hollywood. Harry Hamlin was more distinctive looking and memorable.

Scare me too death (take out the boy/girl story) ... and #TheWolfman with Anthony Hopkins and Benicio del Toro scares the Fr@&# out of me... Nothing, NOTHING beats #LonChaney, the Original

I prefer the original. It's dated and special effects can be laughable but the atmosphere is so unique, that the remake couldn't replicate it.

Some of the efffects in the 1981 version were bad even for the time but the 2010 has some of the most basic CGI in a 100+ million movie which is already dated beyond belief in just 13 years.

If the remake didn't have soo many favourite actors with Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson, Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton and my new actors I found out after release of this movie - Nicholas Hoult, Luke Evans or Kaya Scodelario I'd never have any kind of interest in it. Maybe I'd love it more if I watched it before watching 1981's one but the original is still better and I watched it just because they said it was that good.... and it was......especially the medusa scene is more awesome in the original I was really scared the first time.....they really gave their everything into the original movie.... only visual effects (and acting ofcourse) are really great in it's remake.
