    In the original Japanese the conversation was something like,(note that in Japanese the L is pronounced R so Gally would be pronounced Gary), I guess I'll call you Gary. The change to the daughter backstory helped speed along the bonding of Ido and Alita. They don't have time to chat while he gradually gathers parts to build and upgrade her body while carrying her torso on his back in a 2-hour movie. It's a very sensible adjustment.

  • @lc9245

    @@AKSBSU Oh yeah, changing part of what makes her into who she was. Him carrying her on his back while he collects parts is imitating mothers who work on the field carrying their child on their backpack. Gally looks to him as her mother. That's why she wanted to fight for him. The movie should have cut out the waking up and eating nonsense, the ridiculous nice town, the nonsensical Hugo that they ruined, the bike ride, the race and put the parasite robot as the main villain as it is in the comic. He was such a sad and tragic character that represents all of the injustice in the world that they lives. No, it's not sensible, it's a mess.

    right there! i dont understand all the praise of the other comments about how the movie sticks so close to the source material. they made huge changes! ido is about twice as old, had a daughter with Novas Girlfriend out of all the people. never had a cat aparently wich alita receiving the cats name was a huge symbol of alitas character in the manga, of her being an agile fighter and like a stray cat that got lost from home etc..

  • @stlchucko
    @stlchucko4 жыл бұрын

    This is how you can tell a director takes the source material seriously. Many scenes are the same, or at least emulate the original. Future directors need to take note. Original fans want live remarks to be harken back to the source material. The source material has fans because it’s good. Remaking it with updated visuals while retaining the original story and feel will please the longtime fans (more than drive them away) and create new ones.

    I love how clueless and so easy going most of you are about this adaptation and honestly i wish i was to but i can't ignore its glaring fundamental issues. This movie claims it adapts from the source material... being the OVA yes. Yes motorball is in here but it was such a gimmick to attract teens to the movie that it ain't even worth acknowledging. There's so much wrong with this movie from aesthetic to dialogue to backstories..

    I just lost the expectations with book/manga's adaptation movies, because I remember when I was younger that Tim Burton was going to adapt the book "Sir's Peregrine's home for peculiar children" to the cinema, and well, we are talking about one of the BEST directors of the world (The movie was a shit that modified even the coprotagonist, and turned into a teen aventure and romance, what is pretty bad compared to what genrer it is.)

    Anime gets points for character expressions and style, like an anime would usually have. Movie gets points for working with realism and keeping things dynamic enough to not only flow in an enjoyable manner, but also be faithful to the original story. Still the best anime adaptation to date.

    @@derrickzadok2440 To be fair, Rurouni Kenshin is also probably one of the easier ones to film. First of all there are already several versions of the story (the anime completely strays from the manga after the Kyoto arc, and the OVA has a totally different artstyle and realism) so fans would be OK with alterations. Also it's a samurai type of movie, which Japanese directors are well versed in. Sadly western studios are too greedy to learn from that. Instead of taking the material which could be adapted well(or- god forbid - be creative and create something new), they take the most popular to milk a big fanbase.

    @@GraveEnd Actually, how they adapted the fights is one of my favorite parts about the One Piece live action... They basically took the fights from the anime, and did a more realistic (smaller) but extremely accurate version, introducing a bunch of great real life martial arts and stunts into it... Making it much more fun to watch in live action. Im so glad they did this (a smaller version with real stuntmen doing moves, and cool choreography) instead of a huge CGI fest like Man of Steel, a Marvel movie, or something like that. Probably the second would be more "accurate..." but it would´ve NEVER been as good to me (even with the best CG effects in cinema history :S).

    That's what I've always loved about anime for adults, it holds nothing back from gruesome graphic violence to full frontal nudity. When it comes to adult anime they always make the story and artwork more reality based and the live action Alita was able to capture that essence perfectly. That's why it was the only successful anime adaptation made in the last decade. Loved the anime and adored the live action Alita, thank you Japan.

    I have so much history with this movie in a few ways. This was the first anime I ever saw. I owned a copy on VHS and watched it all the time. I also had the honor of taking part in the live action with over 120 hours on set with Robert Rodriguez. I was chatting on set with Rosa Salazar not even knowing who she was. When I saw Jennifer Conley on set nobody knew what role she was playing but since I knew the anime I could tell. IMDB did not have Jennifer listed at all so I let them know she was there and who she was in the movie so they added her. Working with/around Robert Rodriguez is so awesome! I was also an extra in Machete Kills and a driver for the upcoming Spykids. So glad I live only a few minutes away from Troublemaker Studios.

Btw the film is an adaptation of the OVA but there is a little melting pot between the manga and the OVA at some point in the film (Like the Grewishka's character or even the scene that wasn't adapted in the OVA like the motorball thing and some characters like Jashugan or Desty Nova. Some of the characters are actually exclusif from the OVA and film (was created by the OVA) like Chiren)

    It wasn't critically acclaimed because it's not a great movie: the plot feels rushed because they tried to pack 3 volumes worth of manga into a 2 hour movie, layering multiple stories on top of each other. As a result nothing in the film is allowed to breathe, character development is thin and the final act comes flying out of nowhere. The antagonists are really under-developed, particularly compared to their manga counterparts. There's also issues with the casting (Yugo's meant to be a scrappy teenage street urchin not a fucking six-packed super model) and Rodriguez's questionable taste in action scenes. It's so ridiculous to see people talking about an absence of "feminazi propaganda" in a movie like Alita, as if it wasn't partially marketed on the Girl Power angle. Cameron loves female empowerment narratives. The only reason you lot push Alita this much is because it was paired against the far-worse Captain Marvel.

    Ka mi The better example is Rurouni Kenshin. That's how you make a live action adaptation. RRK managed to condense multiple arcs, have it make sense and it was true to the manga, OVA and anime at a smaller budget than Alita. Not to mention that it improved on areas the story needed it. The cast was perfect. They didn't need to rely on CGI or wirefu. All the actors did their own stunts and the fight choreography is one of the best.

    Julio Diego Benitez Inclan I agree. It’s a tough one from me because I love the 90s anime movie, but this new one has really grown on me. Not only because of how it looks but also in how the story is told, it just seems to flow pretty well and The focus is always on Alita. Issue with having put the focus on the doctor’s revenge in there I think there wouldn’t have been enough time to flesh all of that out in a movie where the main focus was Alita. They would’ve had to shift focus, and that’s usually where adaptation screw up. In a tv show or manga there’s enough room to flesh out multiple characters. Many movie adaptations will throw in the whole melting pot of character and they’re constantly shifting focus to each character and the whole movie is throw out of whack. The 90s movie hit the doctors “journey” but in my opinion it didn’t feel like it was enough. I think they wanted to keep him a tormented father figure for this movie just because the movie would’ve had to be 3 hours or more to really put a good focus on the doctor. All in all I think they got the essence of the character quite well though. No complaints from me.

Alita is a long story cramming so much into the movie wasn't as faithful for the original creation as Kenshin. There will be 5 Kenshin movies in total they made 2, 3 and 4, 5 at the same time because they know they have a lot of story to adapt. Where as Alita takes a lot of liberties where it places certain stuff such as Motorball, the flashbacks, and Nova...all of that doesn't happen til way later in the books.
