Hello Clarinet Ninja, I always seem to go sharp when I play my clarinet (B flat, Buffet R13). When I tune at the start of a session, all is fine, but after 10 or so mins, my playing gets sharper and sharper. Despite pulling my tuning barrel out it never really helps. If I do get the B sounding in tune, other parts of the clarinet are way off! I've tried relaxing my throat, adjusting my embouchure, but the tuning is so off, it doesn't really help. This problem is exacerbated when I play indoors in warm venues, eg, orchestral pit. Any tips, advice you could give would be great. Thanks!

You are experiencing something that is pretty normal. From an instrument perspective, I believe that your instrument can be pulled out 2-3 millimeters at the barrel and 1-2 millimeters between the upper and lower joint. It’s unavoidable to go sharper as you warm up or you are in a warm space. It’s hard to relax your throat. Also keep in mind we use the word throat, but it is actually our larynx. I sometimes use the word throat (I think I did in a video I made). In addition to releasing tension, we need to make sure our voicing is right. A lot of how I teach it is in my overtone videos. Sharpness will come from tension somewhere. Jaw (biting), airway (throat/larynx), or in our voicing. Having them balanced properly should put us in tune (as much as a clarinet can) with a good sound. Hope this helps

I have never heard of “Leitner & Kraus”. That sounds like it may be for German clarinets. I don’t know anything about that stuff. I wish I did! Are you playing German system?

Here´s what I found out about Leitner & Kraus: Makers of high quality (and pricey) clarinets, offering many models for the German system, but "French system" and mixture "Reform Böhm" also, as well as bespoke instruments. They´re relatively young, the company was founded in the 1990s. They´re offering a range of mouthpieces made of wood ("Linea Verde") and some composite material "Zelltec". The website doesn´t give prices for the instruments but I guess I need not ask. In one forum I saw prices around the 5000 Euro mark. Although I find it a bit unfortunate that German instrument makers seem to be relatively unknown in the US, considering the price range I can understand it. Yet all American clarinetists seem to push a sigh of relief when they have brought home their R13, being fixated on the big French brands.

Uh-oh…I think I could tell a difference, though I don’t think I could see it on the spectroscope. It seemed to have the effect that ligatures with extra bits of metal like the Louis or Rovner Platinum do. I heard more density and core in the sound pretty consistently…like a more intense hue of a colour. Uh-oh….that’s going to be 18 bajillion in Canadian $….

Haha! It’s frustrating. There is a small difference. I have found it frustrating to attach the device to my ligature all the time. I may just be persnickety about having an extra (albeit small) task when assembling my clarinet. It’s an interesting idea and it is doing something….

I hear that the reed isn't vibrating with efficiency...articulations are heavy, and the tunning is not good o throat notes...isn't it?

I am not sure I heard a difference when I used the device, there was a small difference in how it felt to play. I think the heavy articulation and strange pitch must be just how I play

ha, very funny and Yike's! $86 (there goes my heart) looks like a lig... after screwing around with my clarinet gaps to tune in, this is a non investment for my impoverished financial status.
